Allow for repairing on cap ships.

Nov 15, 2006 Ghost link
We can't repair on them anymore now that repairing costs money. A good question is: Should repairing remain free on cap ships or still have a cost? I would suggest making it free if on a capship of your own nation, but still charging a small amount if you're docked with a differen't nation's ship.

Hmm. This is a very interesting topic.

From a realistic point of view, repairs on a capital ship should be more expensive than on an immobile counterpart (a.k.a. station), since it would be harder for capital ships to lug tons of replacement parts around with them.

In fact, I think that only some ship types (e.g. standard versions) should be repairable at all, to 'push' them a bit more. this would mean that no (major or not major) faction ship variant could be repaired on a capital ship that has docks.

There could be exceptions to this, to allow for carrier-type capital ships, which can repair specific faction variants. A Serco Attack Carrier would perhaps be able to repair the SVG, but not the Prometheus, for which you would need the Serco Dominance Carrier (just spouting random class names, don't pay attention to them).

Disambiguation to this topic:
How about storing ship hulls on capital ships? This would provide moving refitting platforms, essential to territory conflicts.

I think repairing should be possible on cap ships.

I could go either way on the need to pay. On one hand a mobile repair dock would be more expensive to operate, but on the other hand I would think a cap ship owner would want to give out free or dirt cheap repairs in order to keep defending fighters happy.

It seems like a bit of a stretch that a cap ship would have an unlimited amount of hulls on board. It might make for more interesting battles if pilots of destroyed ships would have to fly back in from the nearest station. An obvious tactic would be to target damaged ships nearing the cap ship's dock in order to finish them off and take them out of the sector. Perhaps the hulls would be limited, but could be replenished via cargo delivery.

And there we come back to my long time forgotten thread about VO professions.
Members of nation military guilds should receive a government paycheck for their services and reparing ships docked in nation stations/capships should be free for them.

My reasoning for repairs being free on caps of your own nation go kind of in line with what bojan said. That being if you're defending a military vessel for your nation, they might cover your repairs for you.

Oh come on, are you honestly saying that a Serco HAC isn't going to have the facilities to repair its own nation's primary war machines?

I can understand that repairing in capital-class civilian transports would be cost-prohibitive for some vessels, but any respectable military would surely have the facilities and the funding to further the war effort by repairing combatants at little if any cost.

Give us CARRIERS!!!!!!!!!!
Like really space like looking carriers.
Yep.

I don't think we are ready for carriers yet. It would be really cool but a bit pointless for the mo'. Once we get a good big battle system going though :-).

But for the moment, I thnk we should be getting repairs in cappies, though they would be much more expencive (x2? x3? x10?). Exept in battle zones, where they would be free. Or really cheap. HAC should also carry a limited supply or rockets (say 200 ea?) at premium price (even on battle zones?)

To prevent people from abusing the battle zone cappies make it so that only the people that have the mission can repair/buy at low prices...

Ah yes, I've also wanted ammo refils on caps for quite a while.

Whistler: I'm sorry, I wasn't being clear enough. Of course I did not envision boundless ship hull storage rooms on capital ships. The numbers of ships stored would be limited, perhaps per pilot accommodated on the ship.

Cunjo: Yes, I seriously think that even a HAC's primary role is not the carrying and accommodating of supplemental ships (nor is it the secondary or even tertiary one). For one thing, storage space should be limited to one ship per pilot. Secondly, repairing a battered prometheus would require lots of special equipment. Perhaps there could be 'repair kits' that captains could buy, to allow for different ships to be repaired? They would not be infinite, you could, for example, repair 10 ragnaroks with a standard kit. Or 10 proms with a special one. These numbers are purely hypothetical.

In any case, I'm really looking forward to ships that are almost exclusively intended for ship transportation and accommodation, i.e. Carriers. I realize they have no place in the current game universe, but I also think to force this role upon battleships like the HAC or frigates like the Trident would be nonsense.

As for the 'military discount':
If the ship is a faction military ship, and you are on a mission from that faction (I'm assuming this to be the status quo for pilots in the future, being on a mission from your military. Of course, this would require multiple active missions), repairs could be indeed free of charge, since you're already lending your life and skills to the nation in question.

Yes. Capships should repair you.
