I disagree every game needs safe spot. be that an allied town or w/e. You need to be able to hide!!!

Listen to LostCommander. He has a point about sizes.

As for 'safe havens': Definitely required, no argument about that.

The only thing preventing the devs from giving us extremely large objects is our own crappy graphics cards which could not render the amount of vertices or polygons. I think that's it.

Having the large cappies is essentially like having large planetoids or asteroids or whatnot. Limited by technical constraints.

Of course, if we would raise the minumum standards to 256 MB cards, there's all KINDS of great things that could happen... Hehe.

E.g. a lynchmob traveling all the way to Wisconsin.

A Capship of that magnitude would be a mobile station in it's own right. I'm strongly against providing a safe haven for all but the smaller ships (maybe even those) because the moment you pull in something unrealistic as an indestructable base, it will become abused. Anytime you through in "invincible" into a game, there becomes a place where anyone who wants to have a fighting chance needs to abuse whatever we're modifying. Safe havens, in this example.

Think back to when you played tag in grade school. Personally, I preferred freeze tag, without any bases. But inevitably there'd be the nerdier kids who just had to have bases, and they'd sit there within arms length until you turned your back. The best strategy you had was to try and shame them by name calling until maybe they felt embarrassed enough to run out and get caught. (Of course, VO being the mature environment it is doesn't have any of this, now does it?) It was stupid! I wanted to rip that stupid tree out of the ground, so they didn't have any place to hide.

Now apply the same logic to VO. Right now, that's more or less what we have concerning the stations, except one step worse; if you fire on someone within 1000m, you get told on and the strike force comes to punish you until you temporarily leave. That's all well and fine, and even nice and realistic. However, I fully expect that eventually even the most stalwart of bases will become vunerable to some degree, even if I do need a bunch of my buddies to help tear the tree from its roots. You can run, but you can't hide. Unless of course you have bigger, meaner buddies.

The strike forces do not offer sufficient protection right now. If at some point it becomes REALLY hard for hostile elements to penetrate another factions territory (Think WoW and invading an enemy city, REALLY REALLY hard) then yes, I agree make super-cap ships permanent. But unless the ship has a place where it is relatively safe it needs to disapear. Especially with the low number of players we got right now.

As for smaller cappies, it is my opinion that
a) a basic small capship should be realtively easy to get ( to let everyone be happy because they own THEIR cappie)
b) They need to log out. A small cappie can be destroyed by 2-3 people! Unless the zone is REALLY REALLY hard to break in the small time player that played a bit every week for 7 months and finally got one would be really pissed of.
c) This is a game, not real life, and for some people real life is actually more important *gasp!* we can't put the game in the first place. Some concessions must be made for players that can't play 24/7.

Be it WoW that gets you rest XP, or UO that has the GGS (garanteed gain system) you need something that helps curve up players that can't play much. It gives us incentive to keep our accounts. Because if I play a game and get nowhere after two months then I will get bored and stop. So I need t be kept interested :)
