Slave Client

Jun 12, 2007 Demonen link
A slave client is a secondary client that connects to the primary client, but not to the server.

Let's say VO opened up port 2255 and you could connect a second computer to that port over LAN, log in using a username/password set in the primary client, and access many of the features via that interface.

The slave client could be a purely 2D client, fairly simple and light-weight, to allow even low-end secondary computers to be used as a second display for Vendetta.
It'd basically be like always having the PDA open on one screen.

The devs could just enable some kind of IP socket support for the Lua and let us hack our own?

What are you cooking, Demmy?

Whaaa...? Me? I've never ... well ... errr...

It wasn't me!

Methinks Demonen wants to play from work in an easily-hideable interface...

No, Demonen wants to see the PDA section on a real PDA. I see only one good reason for this -- to observe a list of ships in the sector

Though do other things like plotting and mission chatting without leaving HUD mode on a primary display... might be handy and add immersion. You still have 2 hands though and they are on primary comp's controls

Awwwww, I wanted a REAL slave client :(

I thinks "Demmy" has something much more sinister than what aleksey assumes

I'd love to be able to be inside VO on my iPhone.

That would PWN.

forget about the iphone. apple's keeping it's thing as tightly closed as hetero's in san francisco.

i dont have to draw you a picture and describe the anger wich 5000 developers are displaying in that matter. you should just see the attendee's instant messenger's status messages. you'd understand right away.

peepz are pissed.

Thank you, upper case, for that very on-topic and relevant comment.

Anyway, I'm not looking to do anything horrible, I just want the toplist up, and be able to navigate on one screen while flying on the other.
What I'm really after is immersion. It'd feel more like the brige of a spacecraft.

Ah, makes sense but still you people like... well you know who they are and what they can do.

Seems like it would be easy to just place different screens up on separate monitors. All the screens in the game are loaded into video memory the whole time you are playing the game, they just need to be sent to the monitor so you can see it. If you've got a multi-headed display setup, this is as simple as telling the client to be windowed rather than full screen. each screen is placed on a separate window and thus can be placed on a different monitor.

A slave client isnt really needed - vo just needs to be able to recognise that multiple monitors are availible and be able to redirect information to the extra screens.

Most of this is in fact already supported.....

I had an idea for how to do this with a plugin and say, a perl script for an off-board sector list and mission log, but i never got around to implementing it after testing ideas for how to connect it to VO.

I have requested that before, since we can:

-use 3 monitors with 2 slave clients as "side windows" for improved 3D immersion
-Use 2 windows, one with "externa window" (main display) and the other with chats, PDA, etc.
-Use the notebook screen as auxiliary screen for main external screen
-use a Tablet/Cell phone/netbook as secondary screen for VO
-Use slave client as gunner window
-Display external views, follower camera, and increase environment awareness
-have fun
