More Customization (more complex) to ships

Had a thought while posting to the battery thread:

More Complex Ship Building

Okay, maybe we can still have these quick, easy to put together ships, but what about if we really want to trick it out? Really make it complex? And with more options and more reasons to use those options, there will be more of a want to do this. Autoduel was a great example of how complex you can start making a vehicle and should be used as a thought template for "Expert Level Shipbuilding". Here's a sampling of what's going through my head.

COMPUTER or COMPUTERS: Depending on the power availability, you can customize to have a better flight assist or worse if you prefer to save energy. Maybe a better computer for auto-aim. Some people have been talking about a more customizable HUD (bigger one has been a big topic lately). This could be part of the computer selection available.

ENGINE: Forget the battery for a sec, what about the engine? One that's more efficient for less acceleration but leaves a lot of top end for thruster use when all you want is to dodge better. Or one that's massive for high acceleration. Mass will be the determining factor here more than energy.

WEAPON PLACEMENT CHANGES: Don't like those three small ports on the rag? Why not make it full power to the two heavies and add frontal armor instead? Or...

OPTIONAL GEAR: Instead of the storm radar being a small or large weapon placement, have the ability to use extra space for special gear. Mass becomes a huge issue (excuse the pun), but you could have, for example, a major repair vehicle, a storm-chaser, a guild radar ship for tracking and directing combat, or even a ship that has no weapons and only guides bots, the number of which are dependent on how much gear you're carrying to order them around with.

These are all just off the top of my head and I believe should be optional since while it would make for very strange and interesting ships it should also be difficult enough to be only for gear-heads who really want to get outrageous with their game play.
