Scorched Earth Weapon/Beam

This isnt a half bad idea. All i think is necessary (and stop me if someone has already mentioned this, i didnt read super closely) is to cap the amount of heat a roid can be heated to by that beam. If the client could determine the temperature of the roid, and give an error message if you try to mine with that particular beam when the temperature has hit the cap. This way you dont get roids at 110,000, but still hot enough to put the roid out of commission for a couple days/weeks, and longer if they decide to come back with normal beams

I like the "max heat" idea. Surb, you have any comment more intelligent than "asinine"?

Well, max heat would be good, but we have to make sure it doesn't get out of hand, being too low either. The maximum amount of time any roid should be able to come back to 10K should be 1 week.

I dont know why people dont like this one, its a valid tactic through out history...burning oil fields, salting the ground where crops are grown, poisoning wells...etc...etc...

and it can be used by both sides, also if a battles going poorly a reserve force could be called in to hit the richest roids, thus making them at least for a time...useless to the invading enemy.

also, for all the people whining about the idea...there are huge asteroid fields that are uncharted on the nav screen. the likely hood of the mining industry being completely devastated are remote. and if people are so worried about it, just patrol the roid fields. its a safe bet that if this gets in game guilds like TGFT will start guarding thier staked out fields.

hell there could even be new missions...

No joke man, patrolling might actually have a purpose...

I like this idea, and the max heat one too, but make the max heat work so that if anyone goes above it the beam energy kills their ship if they keep going. This could apply to ALL mining beams not just the weaponized version.

The limit could be set reasonably high so it takes resources out for many days at a time, not weeks/months.

Maybe not a limit of a number, where suddenly your mining beam is hurting you. What about about a range, where it hurts a little but still heats the roids, until it hurts you a lot but heats the roids very little. Just an idea, it seems a little weird for it to be so sudden...

Bump. Borders have been hardened, and credits are scarcer. Soon, crafting will become more important, as will access to rare ores.

The time for an anti-resource weapon is here.

Wouldn't commerce raiding as an economic weapon be more fun than burning rocks?

Anyway, I like the idea of there being a heat threshold after which your ship starts to take damage from the heat of the asteroid. The more armor, the longer you can dwell. Hoping for a mining Connie so using one of those you could heat an asteroid to a very high temperature (and collect the ore at the same time!).

Threshold should be adjusted so that the max temperature of an asteroid will only take a week or less to cool down without further intervention. Nothing is more boring than a rock that takes so long to cool that everyone just writes it off and forgets about it.
