Glowy Asteroids?

Aug 03, 2010 abortretryfail link
This one is pretty much just eye candy and nerd-fodder, but I think it would be cool as hell if you guys added accurate thermal radiation to asteroids. This way, when miners cook a 'roid up to 3000K, it actually glows bright enough to see it across the sector.

Just a thought I figured was worth sharing. :)

Its only eye candy, but its a neat idea. Besides, eye candy is cool.

Just make sure to cap the luminescence of the roids. Or I'll go and find the smallest rock to heat as high as I possibly can to make it a second sun.

That'd be pretty cool.

And then that bright ultra hot thing will still be called "ice"?

Anyway I like it, but not for every type of roid. Maybe only for metallic ones, with very high temperature cap.

More important, heating/cooling should change from linear to reverse exponential, never reaching max temp.

How about instead making a 'thermal vision' addon for ships. It could make it easy to see at a glance which roids are getting mined/heated and from far away too. As a bonus, perhaps even being able to see the paths of recent turboing ships (assuming the implemention doesn't require too many resources)

Well we have swarm trails, I don't think off hand that turbo trails would be that super hard to put in game. Only problem is they'd kill frame rates in a hive skirmish or something like that.

Alloh, as far as I know there is no absolute tempature cap, nor do the devs need to make one. I was merely suggesting a maximum brightness for aesthetic reasons.

Seeing visual cues for hot asteroids would be cool. If we get some extra time, we'll look into it.

meridian: I'm actually looking to add ship trails to fog, but there are some implementation caveats.

aye yea inc, trails through fog, much like a wake off a boat would be really cool.
