H.E. mining improvement (Lport HE beam / 3s port moth)

Feb 24, 2011 xXxDSMer link
i often find myself using a valent maud revB (56cu) with 3 high efficiency beams because i'm not in a hurry and i can get alot more ore out of the nice roids before they get "too hot", which gives me more ore with less travel (aside from the trips to station the 56cu limit causes)

it would be nice if there were a Lport version of the high efficiency mining beam that could be fitted onto the behemoth / heavy miner1 / heavy miner 2 (or any other large port, like the other addons work) so we could just go to a roid with 120 cu capacity and mine with 3 high efficiency beams rather than have to limit ourselves to 56cu and make several trips, or limit ourselves to a single high efficiency beam mining on a HM for high efficiency mining operations.

so i propose a large port version of the high efficiency mining beam, maybe the same stats just a large port version, or different stats with the same 5 rate/heat.. perhaps 1.0R 0.2H.. also may be good to keep the 6 grid (for whatever reason the small port HE beam has 6 grid)

name: (cant really think of one other than maybe "large high efficiency mining beam"... any ideas?)
Port: Large
Range: 50m (seems common for large port to be able to mine farther, but considering the efficiency it shouldnt reach 75m. maybe even cut this down to 25m)
Rate: 1.0 / 0.5 (thinking 1.0 because you can move more matter through a larger hole, or in this case, port)
Heat: 0.2 / 0.1 (thinking 0.2 to keep it on par with the small port's 5 rate/heat)
Mass: 500kg (like all the other mining beams)
Grid: 6 (like as with the current small port HE beam, to keep from being able to equip four i assume)
(or perhaps because it takes more power to make the beam be as efficient as it is)

or perhaps a moth variant with 3 small ports for equipping the current high efficiency beams:
name: Behemoth EM (efficiency miner)
licenses: -/-/-/4/10 (4 trade=120cu, 10 mining=HE beam)
armor: 10000 (like the other mining oriented behemoths)
cargo: 120cu (not as much as the HM1/HM2)
ports: 3 small (ideal for equipping high efficiency mining beams)
mass: 30,000kg
length: 34m
thrust: 500N
turbo thrust: 900N
max speed: 65m/s
spin torque: 19.0N
turbo speed: 160m/s
turbo energy: 50/sec (same engine as the HM1/HM2)

either of these things would be great additions to the game for those of us that prefer a high rate/heat rather than just fililng up quickly at the cost of more heat (in comparison to high efficiency mining)

You have the HD beams. Work with them, or, don't. Your (only) choice.

kthxbi

why not mine and dump with a hornet then scoop it all up with an XC?

abortretryfail,

hmm, maybe because if he sells that ore he won't get points for badges. It depends ))

Yeah he will. That's how i got Basic Miner II.

None of you mine at all. +1 to this idea.

why not mine and dump with a hornet then scoop it all up with an XC?

Because it doubles the travel time. Good 'roids can be 10km or more away from stations or wormholes, and in some remote sectors good ones can be too far away to see (20km or so +). You might not even be able to get to the ore before it disappears.

You have the HD beams. Work with them, or, don't. Your (only) choice.

HD beams mine quickly, but are inefficient compared to an HE. For the purposes DSM describes, and HD is not ideal.

There's no "ideal" equipment in VO. Fuck off with your "we need stuff that's L-port and super duper efficient"

Better: Hire a hauler. You mine, he stores it at a station for you.

why 'hire' a hauler when you could mine 120 (or more CU's) with HE beams on the proposed moth and haul it back to station yourself and not have to pay someone to haul it for you? lol

and it dosen't nessecarily have to be a large port equivalent of the HE beam.. it could be the 3s port moth... either would work for myself and whoever else prefers to do HE mining sometimes.

/me hands lecter a plate full of troll-be-gone

lol

"why 'hire' a hauler when you could mine 120 (or more CU's) with HE beams on the proposed moth and haul it back to station yourself and not have to pay someone to haul it for you?"

To foster interactions between players.

Sometimes I think we pirates are less antisocial than the traders/miners.....

I'm serious. I think I probably have negotiated more player-to-player deals than many so-called traders have, and I'm not counting piracy in that. I'm talking things like, "I am lazy, so I'll pay you a million credits to haul me some junk from X to Y."

it'd take 3 xc's of heli just to pay for that million to haul stuff lol..

but back towards on topic, would anyone else use something like what i've suggested? or wouldja like to see something tweaked about either of the suggestions?

I've previously suggested either a variant on the Moth Miner II that is 2 large ports and 2 small ports (plus the built-in mineral scanner), or a large-port "Twin HE beam" that would act like 2 small port HE beams, as a 2 HE + 2 HD rag wins the most cu per heat-rise contest. Of course we'd all prefer not to have to nav back to deep-space roids to haul. I'd prefer the 4-port moth for all the small-port add-on options as well, but the Large-port add-on meets the desire to merge the capabilities of a rag miner with a moth. Either of these options can have the limiting factor of BM3 badge or some extreme mining license requirement.

As far as mining with all HE beams... you're missing the point of them: they are made to drive the heat rate average of all beams down, so faster beams can pull faster longer. Alone they are too slow and will heat a roid as much or more per cu mined, if not per time.

@ Lecter: same could have been said about the Greyhound. "Whah! we can't catch traders in a hog II! Make us a ship!". I appreciate that you suggested the moth miner II, but you might allow those of us who still enjoy mining to offer refinements for our purposes.
