gambling in station bars

Hi id like to see gambling mini games available in bars. Games such as pokies, roulette maybe something original to the vendetta universe, horse (or some alien similar) races, a fictional football like league to bet on, online poker games between pilots and even playable mini games such as online chess and pool (either friendly or for cash). You could have bets on race events (racers will have to sign in in advance with scratch bets being refunded). Some bars could specialise in gambling with a variety of weird bets put up by the developers coming in to play.

Oldie but still a good one. +1

This has been done in the past through plugins and bots however.

Got sidetracked badly due to RL. Starting to get back into this again. Been working the past couple of days on debugging for a public beta test.

Was there a casino in the grey sector planned? I really +1 that. What happened to the project? Sometimes when I get on line I dont really want to fly missions but I feel like socializing and doing something casual that has some sort of stake. +1 to winning limited edition widgets(or other excusive content) for winning gambling events and +1 to nfz around station. Seroiusly devs please make this happen. Where can I get a list of race locations? Also some ships, upgrades or weapons that cannot be bought for prizes is good. A lot of casinos will shower high rollers or big winners with all kinda luvin so they get a good reputation and punters return. One snazzy prize could be a watch (really a widget) that shows real time, greenwhich meantime and time until vendetta events. If the casino station idea does take off than it should have multiple race tracks with some of them going through an asteroid feild. Races should have a sign in process involving which track, whether its friendly or armed. Than the pilots have to fly out to the start position. This would give punters time to bet. Odds paid should be based on past performances. Also If the casino station is in grey space you should be able to purchase fictitious illicit goods to trade at controlled stations for high prices. There would be a chance if carrying that every station you dock with that the goods will be confiscated and loss of license, fine or faction standing would take place. Chance of getting searched should be linked to faction standing. Something to keep trade pilots awake on long flights would sell well. Lol

Just contacted the devs and there is no casino or in game gambling in current development. May happen in the future. If you like the idea please comment and add to it.

The devs weren't doing it. It was a project that PA was building, started some 2 years ago. What happened was that I became unemployed, had to stop paying the subscription on the PA bot (Phoenix Voice) which would have run the casino, then got depressed for a while. (Been running into quite a bit of age discrimination) While I'm still jobless ATM, I have been lately trying to brush off the malaise to get things going again.

Overall, the PA project was to include a lot of things:

* The casino. Players could interact either through the command line with PMs or with a plugin
* A bank. Players would have been able to wire money to one another if in the same sector as the casino bank or a designated branch bank (i.e. a trusted player with the branch plugin)
* A player to player trade exchange.

All the plugins to support this were laid out already. I have most partly done already. The casino was completed, but I ran into a lot of snags getting the game player (which was designed to allow its own plugins and could facilitate non-casino games as well) completed sufficiently to support a public beta test. The casino and gameplayer will support multiplayer games. (this has been a huge snag, but I'm getting through it) The gameplayer modified the bar HUD, but when the player is outside a station, it transparently uses a standalone version.

This has been a huge project. The Casino/Gameplayer combination alone are over 6000 lines of Lua code. Both were architected to utilize their own plugins for the games. This was intended to allow for the rapid development of games (e.g. when I added the Blackjack module, it took less than a week) Oddly enough, it's the gameplayer that's taking all the time. It requires multiple support elements for multplayer games. The version of the casino and gameplayer which only supported single player games was done well over a year ago. I've been adding full multiplayer support over the past 6 months. I'm very very close to a full public beta test now. If I can keep up my current momentum, perhaps sometime in July. I'm aiming for the end of June to be completed with current development of the casino, but I've run into RL snags before (e.g. February).

A lot of player development never makes it into VO, even when the devs know about it. e.g. Targetless. The Casino project has been mentioned multiple times in the forum, so they are probably aware. It's probably just not on their plate at the moment.

When I contacted the devs they said it was all news to them. I admire your efforts but if the casino project isnt released as part of the stock standard game I really dont know how many punters there will be. I am playing on andriod and it sounds as though your plugin is only available for pc. I hope that the developers are reading this post and realise the need for this space station and contact keller and implement it.

The casino games all have a command line interface using PMs in addition to the gameplayer. In fact, the gameplayer actually uses the same interface as the command line does. It parses and changes state (i.e. updates itself) based on the returned messages. An advantage of using the gameplayer is that you can fully carry on other conversations (and do other stuff on other screens - remember the gameplayer is an integral part of the bar; just go back there) while playing. You can also use the gameplayer while in space when it pops up in its own dialog.

I'm trying to get things to the point where a public beta is possible by the end of June. Keep your fingers crossed. Finding work takes priority, but I'm starting to get back onto this as a means of sanity.

As an example. To play the slots game, you'd send the following PMs to the casino:

1) !casino play slots This would start the casino game
2) !casino token 100 This tells the casino that you want a token (it takes 5 to play) has a value of 100c
3) !casino play This plays the game

You may play the game until you're done by repeating steps 2 and 3. If you don't want to change the token value, just use step 3.

When you're done...

4) !casino quit Quits the currently active game

If there's an interest, I'll be happy to post the entire command set for casino games. (or just ask the front desk with !casino front desk. They're pretty good about helping you get started) At any time, send !casino help for information on what commands you can use.

(easytarget76: I play on Android, too, and for many PC things, like pluggins, there are work-arounds to get them to work on Android. ...As far as I know from what I have read.)

Please get the casino idea implemented. Things like this are exactly what VO needs. ...Additional side content that entertains.

Please make the casino's atmosphere bright and colorful, like what you see in a real casino. ...A complete opposite of the darkness of space. A relaxing and fun side thing to do. It should not feel like work at all. I feel that too much of the current VO content feels like work rather than fun.

I would even suggest using the casino project as a test. Monitor it's popularity. If it winds up being hugely popular with players, that would be the evidence needed to shine a spotlight on the diar need for additional content in VO for sake of a more entertaining game as a whole.

You have my full support.

(Off-topic side note: It would be nice if stuff like this, made by dedicated players, including plugins, were all in game. I shouldn't have the power to go in and edit the files and code of VO and shouldn't need to. It can even be done on Android. Doesn't that make VO easily hacked? Players just want to play and have fun. There are those who feel they shouldn't have to go in changing stuff like that. It makes it seem like VO, a ten year old game, is still in beta or alpha.)

I am trying to get a public beta going for early July.

As to look and feel, the casino (i.e. the gameplayer component of it) is a part of each station's bar area. The interface was designed to add on to it, not over run it. (i.e. you can still have bar chats while playing) Multiplayer games (of which right now is only craps, but others are planned) will have the ability to auto-invite players you've invited into your multiplayer game into a group (which the gameplayer would create for you if you haven't already), allowing you to have more private conversations at your table. The look and feel of the gameplayer itself is dependent on which skin you're using for in your client. This may change down the road, but for the moment, whatever the rest of the station screens look like is what the casino screen looks like. The gameplayer looks a little more generic while in space. (I intend to tweak that a bit before the beta if possible; it hasn't been a high priority for the moment)

If you missed the other thread on this, please see these links:

Blackjack: http://its-obvious-solutions.com/images/VO/Blackjack.png
Slots: http://its-obvious-solutions.com/images/VO/Slots.png

These should give all of you an idea of what you'd be looking at.

While I'm not big on self-gratification, please don't be fooled by people who say this was their idea. The slotbot long predated me. I learned of it when I was thinking about the casino about 2.5 years ago. (yeah - it's been that long. RL kind of sucks at times when you can't do stuff you'd enjoy) The gameplayer has been in development since about 6 months after the casino itself. Up to now, it's been almost entirely known inside PA. We did try to run it for a few months, but there were still some bugs in the casino itself, and some people complained because of them. That's why THIS time, we're going to have a proper beta, and if any bugs come up, I'll expect people to publish them so I can fix them.

As to writing plugins to create content, consider World of Warcraft. It uses Lua to build player created and driven plugins and is one of the most successful games in history. I'd like to believe the VO devs made the client support plugins because they were hoping that dedicated players would create stuff. I agree that some plugins should be packaged as standard (e.g. Targetless - even with its occasional warts, I'd dare say Navcomp or Cargolist, but that would be self-serving. There are many more) Since the client interface is written in Lua, it makes sense that player plugins could be (following an appropriate review period) made a part of that client, really for nothing more than just including it with the basic interface code.

Oh, before I forget. There are full ambient sounds that go with the casino gameplayer itself and with all games.

I really wish that I could be a part of the test run but im playing on android. This is a fantastic idea and I hope keller has every future sucess with.

I'm still trying to work out the most obvious bugs. While it's going to be a beta test, obvious bugs are not cool. I'll make the announcement in here as soon as I'm ready.

As stated earlier, the entire thing uses a PM interface to work. That means you can play the casino game just by entering text. All the current games will return text which is relevant to it and easily human readable. What the gameplayer plugin does is to read these messages and make changes on its end to reflect what you'd be reading. A future version of the casino and gameplayer will utilize HTTP and speak to an offsite script suite to manage the games (and will retain the PM interface as an interface only), but this current version uses the PM interface and resides as a Lua server running on a VO client.
