Fight the emptyness of space

Aug 02, 2014 DeathSpores link
I made a tour from greyspace to deep in the dominion without encountering a single NPC voy, that was boring.

A quick fix would be to make the station auto launch a voy every 2-3 minutes with mission system.

Yeah i could launch the voys meself by takin' the mission, but then the escort wont fight back when i take down the transports.

Please do Fix this NOW!
and get rid of lousy empty voys in station sector they are pointless.

Or explain to me what's the point of keepin' a subscription to this game when ye already removed all the interests for roleplayin' a pirate.

The added traffic at station has improved the atmosphere. For wh traffic, it should be a variety of npc activity, much of which doesn't currently exist.

I love wandering around space, but it gets lonely sometimes. I would love to see more traffic. I sat at a wh for almost an hour last night and no npc's came through.

This. ^
Why not just have actual convoys that travel between sectors instead of ones that appear in-sector and dock with no cargo?

Because that would actually be sensible, and we can't have that!

Heh, it's actually a little more complicated than that. We had some serious problems where convoy populations were impacting usability of parts of the galaxy, and we had no people to work on fixing the problem at the time.

Anyway, we'll see what we can do.

Are you talking about those convoys that would occasionally get stuck in wormhole sectors a couple years ago? Those weren't necessarily a *bad* thing. Lots of us had a blast blowing them up. :)

No.. I'm talking about stuff that caused sectors to become unusable, for anyone.

You guys made some pretty big changes to the sector code since then though. Maybe it's time to give it another try?

Well in what sending automatically convoys with the current mission system would be different from a massive amount a player running the same number of escorts, or are you implying your game does not support massive player anymore?

It depends on the behaviour of the individual convoy. We were having problems with the AI of convoys in certain situations, and those problems have not been fixed, to date.

Keep in mind, we've been looking at this more recently than you may be aware. Like if 4 individuals have problems with 4 different sectors because of a common issue, we may know about it; but those 4 people may never talk to one another, or post on the forums or in chat. So, we actually spend a lot of time on problems that are never elevated to the point of being "known" by the greater userbase.

Convoys that involve players often have different parameters, and behaviours. Yes, the game supports a "massive" player base, but there is no game in existence that doesn't have limitations on certain circumstances (for instance, Eve's time dilation). Very large numbers of NPC ships that are "stuck" in other objects, or one another, can create some nasty problems for our individual sector daemons. We've done a lot of work to mitigate the worst-case scenarios and keep things running even if there is a problem.. but what we really need to do is spend some time on the high-level convoy + low-level AI behaviour. This is on the todo-list for the coming months anyway..

But it isn't a simple "change A to make B" scenario, that's the point I'm really trying to make here. It can't be resolved by a "decision" on my part to change some values somewhere.. this requires some R&D and real development time to actually "fix". Managing tens of thousands of NPCs (sometimes hundreds of thousands) can.. bring up some interesting issues. Most of which we have worked through, but there are still some corner cases that need to be resolved.

Frankly, I'd like to see NPCs taking missions from the list. That way the mission list is constantly changing and at least appears more dynamic.

@ Keller. -1. I can see the bugs getting in that one. You click on the mission and a message pops up saying "I'm sorry, but that mission is no longer available".. it is VO after all. ;)
