Contextual Menus

Dec 18, 2003 Tempest link
There are so many commands that I'm starting to lose track of them. Could you possibly implement contextual menus, with lists of commands specific to what the player has selected or the action the player wishes to perform. It would make for less headaches trying to remember how /insertyourcommandhere is supposed to work.

We've thought about that a lot in the past. It's kind-of an ongoing battle here. Some of us want menus and others don't want stuff cluttering up the display. We still haven't reached a good conclusion.
I do agree that there are a lot of commands though.

Have you reached a conclusion yet?

Ever played games like Enemy Territory? You can have a contextual menu that appears after pressing some key... It works very well.

not sure if this would fit with this but if menues were not as viable an option, how bout making it so that we can set up binds that use the control option and command buttons as modifiers (alt, ms-button on pc) that way we can bind more commands to buttons then what we currently have.

Grzywacz, Enemy Territory has a wonderful HUD. etpro is better than etpub, in my opinion.

Another thing about Enemy Territory? You don't know the identity of your enemy (until you kill one, then it tells you who you killed).

One thing that really bothers me is that in Vendetta, commands are not tab-completed. You type /pi for instance, press tab, and it will replace it with a player name.

And if there are multiple possibilities, it should should list them. Bash tab completion = good.

Can I vote for more GUI interface stuff? Instead of typing arcane commands? Is that allowed?

It's allowed so long as the guides get a menu first. Much of the stuff we have to input is quite arcane.

/me votes "Yes" for both tab-completed commands (any line that starts with a slash) and GUI command interfaces, just to make Leber & other Mac users happy. I would wager tab-completed command line would be faster than the GUI, though. :-p

I'm all for revisiting this, once we have a menu system that Doesn't Suck. The current one is a bit of a pain to add things to. We're working on the less-suck version right now.

Menstrator? what?

And having a non-suck system would be nice.

icbm1987: Read my post over again, I think you've missed something. "Menuator" does not have an 's', and it only has one 't'.
