Faction-Specific Info at Stations

Nov 04, 2004 mburrack link
I have a random idea, and sorry if this has been suggested already, but I didn't find it in a search so here goes...

What if each faction (such as the UIT), at stations owned by them, had their own sort of message board where faction members could leave messages, and it could ONLY be read by members of that faction? It could be moderated to some degree, perhaps, but it would allow a good way of organizing people within a faction without letting other factions know about it.

And some notes:
- In-game messages don't work too well b/c even if you could get everyone in a faction on a certain channel, there's nothing keeping anybody ELSE out of that channel. Also, you'd only be reaching the members currently online, which doesn't work too well when trying to get everyone in a faction organized.
- Websites would work but they're external to the game and thus nowhere near as convenient or immersive.
- Faction-specific sections on the message board would be okay but still lack the immersion of an in-game interface. Or, as an alternative, don't allow POSTING within the game, but rather just an in-game reading of the messageboard for that given faction! If you want something posted, go to the forums and post it there, and it'll show up automatically in the game!

I see this being a good way to get across faction-specific info, eg. avoid this area, enemies have been sighted often; we're going to go attack such-and-such in two days, everyone that can please get on the server and meet up at such-and-such base....

It would go a long way towards allowing a move towards more faction/team-oriented play versus individual play. Yes, we have guilds and such, but to my thinking, that's what the factions are FOR--to allow you to be a member of your faction and support it, etc.

So maybe as a starter, we could JUST have the faction-specific sections on the message boards, where only UIT members can get to the UIT section, etc., and then add in read-only interfaces to the stations later, and then eventually a way to post even later on from within the game (sending a message to the messageboard bot, for ex.).

Just some thoughts :)

Looking at the player guilds page on the Vendetta web site there are only a few guilds that are all one nation. The majority of them are multi-nation. The nation only message boards may cause a problem for these guilds. For instance it can not be used to co-ordinate an attack etc. But it can be used by guild members of one nation wishing to subvert their guild’s overall intentions during a power struggle, industrial espionage cool.

I strongly believe the division between nations is somewhat blurred at the moment and guilds are being formed by it’s member’s out of game interests E&B players, Elite player etc. I also believe that as the game evolves over time and more nation specific content is added (along the lines on the cargo capture missions etc.) and when some of the newer players realise that there is a war going on, I think (awaits the in-game news facility), that lines will be drawn and there will be a number of nation specific guilds springing up.

Reading back over the last paragraph it occurs to me that it may seem as though I am dismissing off-hand a guild’s reason for forming. On the contrary that is what a guild is, a group of like-minded individuals banding together to expand the possibilities of the game. I have just used the guilds mentioned as an example as they have the most members. On a slight side note I may be petitioning the Elite guild for membership myself in a few months, if they will still have me after the previous paragraph ;). If it wasn’t for Elite I doubt I’ll be playing this game today.

Incidentally how do you multi-national guilds handle the cargo capture missions?

OK! I’m getting off track here, back to the subject in hand. I too would like to see nation specific message boards. But to expand on the idea further I would also like to see secure nation specific channels (a nod in the direction of this post is called for http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/3/7278#87097 ), as well as guild specific message boards and channels. The guild message board can have message like we are going to mine the asteroid field at such and such sector at 12:30pm on Tuesday and the channels could aid in coordinating this venture.
