Ship names

It would be cool if you could "name" each ship you own and it would show up as part of the status that other players could see. This would add some great flavor to play.

yes... I suggested this some time earlier, but the forumsearch seems to have eaten the thread :C..

anyhow, it seems that people were all right with naming cap-ships, but several thought naming fighters was "silly"

Let it be known that my Maud X is "The Lady of Discord" :) And my first Cap Ship will be christened "The Emperor Joshua Norton".

Everyone naming the normal fighter ships would be like a Nation that has 1:2 kills:deaths naming their fighter jets.

Well considering your ship is your avatar, naming the ship would have little use except in the hangar. Nobody would ever see the name, because if you're flying it, they see your name. So other than personalizing and internal hangar management, what's the point?

Have you never named your automobile? Never talked to it? Sea captains name their ships. Space shuttles have names.

It's a human thing to attribute human characteristics to things they value, including names and perceived personalities. And it adds style.

That way you could say "Remember the Lusitania!" "Remember death #35!" just doesn't have the same ring.

So get a post-it note and write on it "Purple Valk = Betsy" and stick it on your monitor. That's basically the same thing as storing a text field for every ship, except a whole lot simpler. (joking, of course)

It would be a good thing to have, but ship names will definitely be low on the devs' priority list.

Maybe when we get a way to customize our ships (tweak engines, battery efficiency, upgrade modules, etc), names will be more meaningful. Right now, you can duplicate your ship with enough money, so no ship is one-of-a-kind.

Many people consider naming their planes and boats a good luck charm. To my knowledge, a bunch of Chuck Yeager's planes were named "Glamerous Glennis" (The P-51 he flew in WWII, and of course the Bell X-1 he flew when he broke the sound barrier). It may be stupid to name ships if you're a crappy pilot, but if it makes you feel good about yourself, I think that it'd be worth it.

naming all of your ships would get really old really fast.

I dunno. I usually name all my ships. As I said, some people consider it a good luck charm.

Not everyone is playing, or will be playing, just to cruise around in a fighter. Naming of cargo vessels is quite common, and if you ask aviators, everyone has a name for the plane, even if everyone does not refer to it by it's name. I even know many people that name there cars. I love the idea personally, and have made a thread about this very idea as well. A must for the game in my opinion.
