The "Option" from Gradius

Why not have a little defense bot that you can release? It takes up 15cu of hold and would be fired like a missile, pursuing the target and firing on them while you escape (a neat thing for a trader to have). Maybe like a mini aerna seeker or assault bot that a trade ship that could spare the hold space could use. It would explode at the first hit from the target's return fire. It would be too big and weigh too much for non-tradeships to use, but an excellent tool for escaping from we... er, *those* nasty pie rats :)

jump in.....spam bots....jump out.....friend jumps in ten secs later and cleans up

How would it be spamming? Teh beh can't move well, I doubt anyone would use it for anything but trading or mining (if we get a large port mining beam with built in scanner), even with the gradius option. And they would take one hit and not do much damage - it would be a distraction to keep a pirate off for long enough for the trader to escape me- er, to escape from Martin ;)

Well I'm not sure about that. Recently some other members of Black Lance have been using the Moth to kill Proms.

while i know we are not the first to take the moth into battle, leave it to us to make it into a prom killer. :) damn black lance and our twisted ways! :D hehehe

There will be a few balances to this. 1 being the use of cargo space (or a drone rack), the second being a limited number of drones actually in use, a thord would be that they will detonate when outside of a certain radius from the ship to prevent abuse from jumping.

But IMO the main issue with drones will be to balance their movement. They have a freind foe AI that can do the job (would have issues with attacking any potential hostiles though) but the issue is with mass and movement. IIRC they had issues with the frigate because to much mass caused issues but I wonder about to little mass. Perhaps have a listed variable for show and then an actual variable that doesn't fully portray the objects mass but will work for the movement (yes it is cheating but I am uncertain if this would even be needed).

Also it will give a great use to flechette weapons :)
