The way I see it, the only way to survive in combat these days is to drive something extremely fast (Centurions), extremely thin (Vultures), or extremely heavily armed and armored (Ragnaroks, Prometheus).

All of my suggestions are based on the idea that light ships are dedicated towards combat and can fly fast, but not far. The medium ships are multi-role and medium speed and endurance. The heavy ships hit hard, and have long endurance, but they're slower. So in that sense, light ships have higher turbo speeds, and lose the ability to infiniboost with an FC battery. Medium ships with turbo speeds over 200 have higher drain, but not quite as severe as with light ships. And any mid-level ship under 200m/s has drain under 50/sec to offset the lack of speed (Miner Hog being an example).

Currently, most of the fast ships are fast, most of the heavy ships hit hard, but the medium ships are by no means medium. They're on the low end of the scale in thrust, spin torque, armor, and weapons. The Hornet and the Warthog being the worst two fighters in the game. The Atlas out-performs the Warthog in everything except for armor. But I've found that despite the lack of armor, it is more survivable in battle because of its maneuverability. As such, I suggest raising the Hog's stats and lowering the Atlas's stats. That way, the Atlas remains a good mid-level cargo ship at the sacrifice of combat ability, while the Hog becomes a good medium fighter at the loss of cargo space. Because of the loss of cargo space, the Warthog Mineral Extractor suddenly loses its usefulness, so it can be a combat variant (that's just a suggested name that I'm posting) that sacrifices speed for armor.

The general consensus is that the Prometheus is too hard to kill. It is very fast for a ship its size, carries a lot of cargo, and has the most armor in the game. I'm suggesting that it be slowed down a little bit, so it's easier to hit and has the armor to take it, but isn't as slow as it used to be.

The general consensus is also that the Valkyrie is too easy a target. But considering that it's a light fighter, all of its variants have stronger than the Warthog, and it's far faster, carries more weapons, etc. To offset its fat profile, I suggest boosting its thrust to make it easier to dodge. I also suggest reducing the armor because then it becomes too survivable.

And addressing the Marauder, it should be faster, like a medium-light fighter, but have a lot of cargo space. This is truly a multi-role fighter. So I boosted the thrust to make it a bit more survivable in combat, and it keeps its large cargo space.

And while I'm at it, I think there should be some changes to missiles to make more of them useful (currently, all you see are swarms and geminis). http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/3/9080
This thread addresses all of the missiles and suggests how they can be changed so that each missile has a different purpose, and how all of them could be more useful than they are now.

agree on this and would like to add, the rag should have a higher turbo thrust.

What the Warthog TD gets no loving :(

Anyways, I like the ideas presented here, but we won't know how they are without actually seeing the modifications in action.

I think the hits to the light fighters are way too harsh, and will stop them from being used at all. And making the ec series gain energy while turboing will make them overpowered imo, they are noob ships. I dont see why the centurion mkII, which weighs quite a bit less than a warthog mkI should have 60 drain, and the hog have 45. The last thing i want to see is infiturboing agt spamming hogs that gain energy while infiturboing.

[stamp of approval]

Although I second tramshed's point about hte hog having 45e. Make it 50e and we'll have a deal.
Mar 29, 2005 Renegade ++RIP++ link
I would prefer some bigger and heavier weapons if we drop the prom once again. Since you are making me have to choose the agt above anything else :(. I could have agreed if the hit was a bit more focussed on the scp... but on all proms ugh...

for the rest, an ec with 40 drain, isn't that a bit over the top? Although your prolly not th eonly one who hates the short run power of the bus. Not to mention that you didn't say anything about the axia and the bushunter bus.

But I would like to make the hit on the cents a bit heavier by giving them NO cargo with the exception of the mk2=1 cargoplace. This will also let the only 2 cargo on a ship a bit bigger then the cent and the 1-2 be more in line with their intended goal since with that increase the valks will be very hard to beat... very hard.

Also on the warthogs, I would like to make the mineral extractor have a slightly increased turbodrain just as tramshed put forward for the mk1.
You also forgot to include the Warthog mk3's drain but that will prolly also be 55.

PS: is the 45 on the wraith also not a bit to much from the good stuff?

cheers

[made some changes to the suggestion list]

The EC series are n00b ships. But hardly anyone buys the EC-88 and the EC-99 besides newbies. They're slow and they're weak. But so that newbies don't get bored holding turbo all the time, I decided that they could get infiniboost with a medium battery because the EC-88 maxes out at 150m/s and the -99 at 170. Even if a newer player sticks a heavy battery on it, that doesn't null the fact that the EC-88 is slow and weak. And I'm not saying anything about the "special" ECs. These are just the run of the mill, single cannon types. Which means despite the energy gain, they're still totally inferior to their nearest analogs, the Centurion, which is much faster, smaller, and more maneuverable.

The Centurion MkII has higher turbo drain than the basic Warthog because the Cent II has a maximum turbo speed of 230m/s while the Warthog tops out at 190. The lowest I'd be willing to go with the Cent II is 55/s. Currently, it's the fastest infiniturboing ship along with the Rune Valk. Even though it loses the infiniboost capability, it would drop at least 500kg in mass, making it a faster fighter in combat. I don't think that'll keep them from being used at all. Other players were saying that lower weight would cause them to bring the normal centurions into combat more, but I'm not willing to give them that advantage without taking the infiniboost away. The basic Hog isn't used outside of people leveling, and the Miner Hog isn't really used much at all. I've only seen one other player besides myself using it, and I think he might have been actually mining, but really, it's not a great miner. Have you tried catching something why only going 190m/s? I mean seriously. It doesn't happen. You're lucky to get close enough take a single shot, let alone spam shots. I don't think it would affect the rate at which people use those two variants in battle, other than I might start using the Miner Hog over the Atlas again.

I didn't put the Hog III on the list for 55 turbo drain because it already has 55 turbo drain, and it's slower than the II and the IV.

Forgot about the Territorial Defender. It should also get the thrust and spin boosts, but it's lighter than all the other variants, so its energy drain is probably fine. It gets an armor boost equal to the MkIV, which I think is fair considering its other advantages.

I lowered all the proms because they're currently more maneuverable than both the warthog and the atlas. They're intended to perform a bit more like Wraiths, just with super armor.
Mar 29, 2005 zaldar link
I have to disagree with the vulture sugesstions, it would become absolutly useless if you lowered it's cargo capacity especially in ctc where it could destroy other ships but not carry the cargo back (since it couldn't hold hardly any of it). Where it is now is low enough on cargo it isn't a trading ship.

I also disagree on the atlas it is already nearly impossible to survive going through sedina b8 in one even the armored variant (at least for me) making it any weaker would just make it more pirate fodder which isn't nessecary.
Mar 29, 2005 softy2 link
Nice post CP.

In general :

Agree on fighters getting less cargo.
Disagree on 45s drain for ships.
Agree with infinitboosting being bad.

Centurions :

I agree with the drop in mass for standard cents.
I think the Rev C/IBGs are fine now, any more reduction is thrust nobody is going to fly them anymore. Though I do think that upping their drain to 65s may be a good way to balance them against the heavier fighters.

Proms :
The reduction is torque might be too much : it will just encourage more AGT users. I actually think the current Proms are almost OK now (maybe 10-25N drop in thrust for the SCP : this thing still fly ridiculously fast).

My suggestion is that their Cruise speed should be dropped to 55m/s.

They are heavy fighters after all. This way, you can actually outflank them with light fighters. The idea is that they perform great at middle distance 100-150m, but lousy at close range. To compensate, up their turbo thrust a bit so they can get out of an outflanking maneuver. With their ability to handle L weapons such as the AGT, they should never allow ships to get close to them. Right now they are uber at all ranges, except at 150-200m, at which case it becomes a dice-rolling contest to see who hits who.
[EDIT: I would also like to see more L ports weapons, so we see more variety for the Proms other than Prom-AGT-XXX].

Valks :
+15N extra thrust will make them uber again I think. An extra +5-10N may be better so they can dodge better given their fatness, but not overly so. Dropping armor to "vulture" status will compensate.
And yeah, the Rune should lose its infiniteboost.

Vultures :
The vultures are almost fine now. Except that the Corv Vult should get a lower drain 65s instead of their current 75s which makes them kinda too shortlegged.

[EDIT] Btw, I have nothing against AGT users in the Prom section. It is just that I'd like to see the Proms being more than just an uber-AGT platform. If it is designed only to use AGTs, then something is wrong.
Mar 30, 2005 Shapenaji link
I agree with softy on the prom, drop its maneuver speed a bit so that we can actually take advantage of the rocket safety, and use our maneuverability.

But I also agree with Rene, there need to be more skillful large port weps.

(also if the prom users start getting attacked heavily close range,
they can bring prox mines, it would mean that the AGT+flares combo would be more risky.)

"But I would like to make the hit on the cents a bit heavier by giving them NO cargo with the exception of the mk2=1 cargoplace. Then they would become useless in CtC unless they have some other ship hanging right with em when they kill the transport...

I would like to see the bushunter bus become alot better, its hard to get 50 bus kills, but i guess exploiting that to get it easy would make it abused easily.. mabye a 5 bus kills in 5 min all your buskills get erased or something? I dunno i wont get into it in this post :)..
Mar 30, 2005 Sun Tzu link
TNA's point about CtC is more than relevant.

What makes CtC cooler than most CtF games is that you currently can attack and win against very unfavourable odds (like 1 vs 4 or 5). But you can do this only in a fast and maneuverable ship with cargo space, ie today merely a Centurion MkII, an Orion Rev C, a Valkyrie Rune or a Prometheus. Each of them has its flaws though, and none is "uber" for CtC.

If the lightest of those ships would lose their cargo space, there would be no alternative to a Prometheus for CtC against unfavourable odds.

I can imagine this might be the intention of certain people. After all, there are competitions where they change the rules when a team wins too often. To the others you may think twice about supporting ideas that will dramatically reduce the CtC fun.

EDIT: in fact the same comments are relevant for attacking alone the convoy in enemy space

The only reason why I was able to ge tthe cargocaptures that I have now is because of having a fast ship with infiniturbo tha tnobody can catch and that in itself can practically outdodge all incoming fire. Really try swooping in with a rag, im sure you'll get hit a favourable amount. Do the same thing with a hornet. Even with the vult you'll get hit more then with a cent.

My point is that if you want a ship that can practically outdodge everything and has like the ability of swooping practically the entire cargo itself then what is the idea about involving teamwork. With the idea of cutting down the cargo to 0 I am actually hurting myself, I am actually hurting the serco masses (or should I say the lack of them) since at the moment we can praise the lords if we are with more then 5 while the itanis outnumber us 3 to 1... (at the time I logged off after all the ctc there was 1 serco left and about 15 itanis...). But lets not talk about these measly things.

The idea behind having the need of somebody behind you with a prom or a rag or centaur or warthog or even an atlas is so that it encourages teamwork. I have no hidden agenda. None whatsoever. Besides check the changes, the prom will be by far as good as it is now... which to say it blunt is not excitingly good (with anything but an agt but it works...).

But anyway that is only me.

cheers

CP: I don't know that there aren't *any* other Hog users out there.. I'm sure a few people in B8 have seen me in my Hog. :)

I do agree that it needs some tweaking, but I think it's pretty fair as it is. I have no trouble with the light ships (cents, valks), but I do have some problems with proms and hornets, which is how it should be considering they're heavier fighters.

What I do not have any trouble with, and should, is the poor unloved Ragnarok. I find it entirely too easy to fight Rags, and they seem to have absolutely no advantages over any other ship other than weapon slots. Upping their turbo thrust, at the very least, would make some sense. They're supposed to be heavy ships, and you'd think they'd have an powerful engine to compenstate. Fast and slashing attacks should be the Rags forte, not dogfights. And currently, it sucks at both.
Mar 30, 2005 CrippledPidgeon link
I think by "Warthog" I meant the Warthog MkI. You commonly see IIs, IIIs, occasionally IVs, and one Mineral Extractor.
Mar 30, 2005 tramshed link
Ok, ive thought about this a bit more, and if the centIIs are going to get raped on turbo-drain, nullifying thier only combat advantage, thier cruise speed should be upped a fair bit, maybe to 90 or so. A centII really stands no chance in a fight with a svg, vulturious, prom, rev, ibg, or valk as it is. I could see removing the cargo, but if you cut it anymore its just not going to be used at all.
Mar 30, 2005 TNAtits link
No tramshed, *cargo removing bad*.... We dont want to have someone come with us to grab the cargo in ctc..then EVERYONE would quit lol..
Mar 30, 2005 KixKizzle link
Don't hurt the vultures....
Everything else I agree with for the most part.
ESPECIALLY the reduction of cargo capacity on the cents.
Though not as drastic as some are suggesting.

If we take down their cargo then that only makes them only less effective in stealing cargo, since they can't take it all and if there are players from the opposite nation defending then they get some of the goodies too. Currently that's how it is but early in the week you can usually take all of it when a cent.

So don't take them down to 0. Just lower a bit.
And Vult needs more armor. Not thrust just armor.
500 should do it.

(I LIKE SMALL INCREMENTS DEVS!)

^bump. I fought Roguelazer's Axia Guardian Wraith and Jestatis Bess's Hog II with my Atlas III and won... Granted Jestatis was flying only missiles, so he was heavy and had long reload times, but I dunno... Should an Atlas be able to pick apart two combat ships so easily? Shouldn't that be the Warthog's job? What about a Xang-Xi Warthog CrippledPidgeon Combat Special? :)
Apr 04, 2005 roguelazer link
That thing was crazy. I mean, the Guardian Wraith is pretty maneuverable for a bomber, but the atlas was literally flying circles around me. Plus it had a heavy AGT on it while all I had was positrons. :?
