can't get game to quit, game freezes when I log out

Hi I am using Ubuntu karmic koala (9.10) and everything seems to be working fine, but after I log out when I go to quit the game it just freezes and I have to basically hit the reset button on my computer.

I had that problem, too. To prevent rebooting the computer you can hit ctrl + alt + f1 (for first tty) log in and type "killall vendetta", then (for me the screen flickers now) press ctrl + alt + f7 to get back to your XServer-session and press ctrl + alt +f1 again, type "exit" to logout and return to your xserver-session again.

For me the problem was gone after I upgraded my ALSA version, if you experience sound problems, you should think about it. -> http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/6/22299#276349

You shouldn't have to do that.

This doesn't happen to me on Archlinux with the latest updates. This is a bug with Ubuntu.

One workaround you may want to try (which is certainly better than switching out of X) is to run the game in windowed mode and set it to full screen using your window manager. That's what I do anyway, just so that I can use other applications while running the client, but it would also help to solve this issue as you could merely use the window manager commands (Alt + F4 by default in most floating window managers, Meta + Shift + c in most tiling ones) to kill the window.

If you haven't tried turning off Compiz while playing, try that too.

While ladron is correct that thats a far better way, and that it seems to be a ubuntu problem (ive had the same recently) the real annoying part is not the freeze, its the magic disappearing config.ini that results. Im assuming VO updates the config.ini as you exit, to automatically save any settings changes you may have made while in the game. Upon leaving VO if it freezes, i find my config ini is completely blanked out, not even default settings are saved. The alsa update has SO FAR fixed the problem for me, but I just did it today so cant say how it is for a longterm fix. If it was just a client crash, it really wouldnt be so annoying. Perhaps a change in the way the config is updated is in order? on the fly type thing.

@endercp12 hmm, strange. The config.ini file wasn't deleted on my pc

Didn't happen all the time for me, just sporadically. But it was still enough to be highly annoying

I haven't experienced the lockup nor disappearing config.ini.

If I did experience it though, I have made backups for both my config.ini and wgaf.cfg always.. just in case. You might want to consider that also.

ive done that and since upgrading alsa the config no longer disappears, nor do i freeze then logging out, still have random client crashes (usually when jumping) with no bug reporter popping up, seems spotty however. Sometimes i can go several hours with no problem sometimes im virtually trapped in a system have tried a clean install same issue, reinstalled Ubuntu same issue.

even after creating backups, the controls seemed to consistantly disappear as did graphics settings. again, no longer an issue however

I have the exact problem. Upon exiting, X locks (mouse works though), blank screen, can't do shit but alt-ctrl-f1. :s
Using nvidia binaries, OSS 4.2, on i686 2.6.32-archlinux.

I run it from terminal in windowed mode, and when want to exit the game i logout, and kill the game from terminal.
Not sure what the solution would be. X logs don't show any errors.
