VO freeze during jumps/startup

Jun 26, 2011 mdrg link
Hello,

It started more recently during my game time (I'm still under 18 gaming hours, very new account)... when I perform a jump, the progress bar simply does not advance at all, forcing me me to pkill the game. It also happened freezing the progress bar at something like 15-20%, and both with full screen (1280x1024) and windowed screen (1024x768). I play at max graphic specs, as my video card can handle it, plus the game is not extremely demanding in graphics resources.

I also tried to use 'load all resources during startup', but it always get stuck at 32%.

Does someone have a tip for me? Some graphic quality to reduce?

Some system info:

Asus P5KSE Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E4400 2ghz
2gb RAM
AMD Radeon HD 5670 512mb using propretary drivers
Ubuntu 11.04 @ Unity (latest updates, 2.6.38-8-generic)

Any help is welcome!

Maybe you are running out memory? The game will eat about 500mb at max settings. Texture resolution has the biggest impact on memory usage.

How can I be sure of it? Are there any logs that may confirm the out of memory error?
When I run the game, it is pretty much the only application running in my Ubuntu, at most Firefox may be active, so I should have at least 1gb free.

Open a terminal and run free to see how much free ram you have. Or use top if you want to watch it in real time (also shows CPU usage).

You can find VO's error log at ~/.vendetta/errors.log. Maybe that will have a hint of what went wrong.

You might want to open a support ticket (there is a link to the left of the website). That's a more reliable way to get a dev's attention. But if you do that and get it sorted out, don't forget to come back and explain the solution here in case other people have the same problem.

`free` won't tell you if you're running out of video memory though. I'd try running it with a lower texture setting and see if it still does it. You could also try turning on texture compression and see if that helps.

I've got a Radeon 5670 with 512mb in my wintendo box and it has a hard time in sectors with a lot going on with the highest texture res settings.
