I had to switch over to alsa lately, and I found my main problem was the way kde 3.2 beta "grabs ahold" of the audio driver. I've found that if there is a system sound going on while loading into Vendetta, that Vendetta never gets access to the sound device. My solution? set the time Arts or what ever control program you use (kde 3.2 defaults with arts) to only hold the device for 1 second, and disable most sounds.

Example: Last time it went without the error. Next after I run the game shortly after shutting down xmms it was without sound. So I ran a SDL-game and rerun Vendetta and viola...

Do you have alsa-oss properly configured? Do you use arts/esd?
