Sloppy mouse

Jan 11, 2005 ob link
Hello,
Before posting a bug report, I'd like to know if other people had the same problem :

The mouse is very "sloppy", but only when I am in a station, or if I have the nav screen active, or the config screen, or the login screen, in brief any "static" screen. When I'm in space, the mouse and the keyboard behave more or less normally, but still sometime "miss" keys or movements, very frustrating in combats.
The game works well other than that, I got a good framerate and the machine is not over-loaded (load ~= 0.8 when in space), but quickly jump to >1.9 when the mouse get problematic (so, on static screens)

Since I never seen any post concerning that problem, I suppose it come from my computer/configuration, however I would like to know how the game access the mouse (SDL, DGA, X11-direct) to try to isolate the problem.

And I would like to clear out this problem before purchasing the game...

Thanks !

[ My config : ]
Intel Celeron 1.7GHz, 512MB RAM. Nvidia Geofore Ti4200
Drivers nvidia v6106. xorg v6.8.1.
Mouse & Keyboard are Logitech USB. (I've tried both on USB port or on ps/2 port with an adapter, no change)
Slackware 10, custom kernel 2.6.7 with input architecture activated ( => all devices are mapped on /dev/input/mice, type ExplorerPS/2)
In xorg.conf, the Input section for the mouse report a ExplorerPS/2 device on /dev/input/mice, 5 buttons with the wheel.
The Xlog find the correct mouse (Logitech)
The mouse/keyboard works perfectly under Quake3, X and UT2004 under the same config. The Hardware Cursor Option in the "Device" section of Xorg is on.

I use a very simple config when I play, no Gnome no KDE, just mwm as the X window manager and a dedicated user account.

Thanks for any tips !

Basically, the mouse drops packets when your system is heavily loaded? Or are the mouse problems causing the heavy load?
It may just be that your perceptions of the mouse movements are "off" because of a low framerate.

I mean the mouse IS causing the heavy load :
The framerame is good while in space (in station the FR doesnt mean much...), the load (taken from another computer running ssh running top on the 1st one) is always ~0.8,0.9 except when I move the mouse and there it jump to nearly 2, in space and in station.

If I use only keyboard for exemple the game is playable, but in the station you have to use the mouse and this become challenging.

In any case, the framerate is good (I've tried these little commands to have the graph and the numbers, /toggleframerate and toggleframeraterate) and it's stable.
Anyway, I'm recompiling a kernel right now with different options, hopping to solve the issue :
I don't think it's a bug in the game because many people would have reported it already, it must be something on my side, but I just wanted to know how the game does access the mouse compared to other games (*) to see if I could reproduce the problem with an exemple program and find a solution.

(*) I mean, either by SDL, by X reporting, by reading on /dev/input/mice, /dev/input/event,...

Okay, issue closed.

I did the usual stuff - recompile kernel, install latest Nvidia, unplug/replug everything, tweak xorg.conf and nvidia-settings a little bit and now it works fine. But I don't know exactly what did I do to resolve the problem...
Sometime Linux can be as mysterious as windows ! :-)

I'm so happy I've just made my account permanent for 3 months !!!

I had problems with really jerky mouse motion upon plugging my mouse in. Rebooting twice (not once, twice) fixed it. Strange.

Neat errors, the first one was likely related to the mouse driver you were using in xorg(sometimes the wrong one works, but not well)
As for solras problem, thats just strange.

Yeah, the mouse driver probably should have been IMPS/2
