Ethical gaming? Or Space Combat?

I am quite new to this game, and have noticed something. People have different views as to how this game should be played.

The Ethical Player
------------------

This player believes everyone has a right to mind their own business. If you are trading, you are non hostile and should not be engaged. Hostile players must first communicate a "Dueling" system, or declare that they are a pirate. Otherwise they are known as "Griefers"

The Pirate
----------

This player believes a game is a game, and must do everything they can to make others have a hard time at it. It is not so much to cause grief, but self satisfaction for blowing up another player's hauled cargo. It's their own fault for being there alone with no escort, right? :)

The War Gamer / Space Combat
----------------------------

This is where I stand. I see that there are three factions, what for? I don't think for ethical purposes, its intergalactic war! Stop the other factions from trading in your zones, which feed their war machine... Teaming up with buddies to get the job done is always acceptable, 3 on 1 ? sure, all the better its strategic. Clean up. Is there a really tough sob around? (Icarus), we may need 5 or 6 on him. The point here is, you have TEAMMATES, why dont you play as a team? The other teams are there to blow up. heh

This is my view, and what i've observed. There is nothing on the website which dictates an "Ethical" scheme... I dont understand, that when i blow up a GOLD player, when i'm BLUE, they get upset? Its a game, and thats part of it.

Thoughts?

I happen to agree with you. It isn't pirating, it's "attacking unarmed enemy transports." Sucks for them if they didn't take an escort into enemy territory. I've said it before, but I'll say it again, we need a team 0!!!!! Then pirates will truly be "pirates," and traders will truly be "neutral." Until then, if you take damage, you're an enemy.

Who says Pirates aren't "Pirates"? I did some good business today. Basically, you fly up to someone, shoot them down to 15% health and demand that they drop their cargo. You take half and leave half for them. Everyone makes some money. :D

I fly around and blow the hell out of people when I want to and just fly when I don't want to kill.

I was ingame today and the entire blue team was coordinating their attacks.. now THATS how the game is played! i had a wild time.

i get tired of hearing about "unprovoked attacks" and "player killers."

about the "player killer" thing: you have weapons. you're supposed to blow the hell out of others, whether they're AI or human. get over it.

in other words, i completely agree with you.

I'm okay with this "pirate" philosophy, so long as duels are respected when they're going. Yes, we're vulnerable, but don't pull "pirate rule" on me and my opponent if you kill us mid-duel.

You lefted me out :(
/me is "The player that thinks everyone should do exactly what they want, just as long as they get along nicely with others"

Pirate all you want, and if your targets get mad, it's their fault. This is a combat game after all.

Rogue you are waaaaaaaaay too nice to be a pirate...

BTW what would "Group Pirating" fall under?

The thing (many) people don't like pirates is that they attack unanounced. Ships need a raiseable S&C flag :)

Only two rules I follow well playing.

1. No bus killing unless fired upon first.

2. No interfering in duels, unless fired upon.

3. Make friends with Phoenix & Icarus, you live longer that way.

hehe forgot that one =P

Ethics in a combat game are bad imo..

i really dont like hearing someone whine when i waste them for being in territory that i feel belongs to my faction..

as they say.. its a COMBAT GAME.

Why is it a question of ethical gaming OR space Combat? Shouldn't it be both? Your character doesn't have to have ethics but you the player should.

Enough of the 'it's a game deal with it' attitude people. Games are supposed to be fun right? If you can't play the game without ruining a reasonable players fun, that is not OK; Go have fun somewhere else please.

Is killing a gold noob in 6 OK for a red or blue raiding party? Sure if its once or twice, this IS war (I suppose). Is it OK when ******** does it for 3 hours straight bankrupting the same gold noobs over and over? If it is then why does s/he play with /hidelog on? Sure it's within the parameters of the game but s/he really killed the joy for a couple new people. I can take it, but then again like many golds I'm rich and I've played long enough to know I need to just leave when the griefers get to me. If I was paying month to month I guess I'd just leave period.

It's fun to a point people. Trading without pirates would be boring. I like defending sector 6 from raiding parties and I like helping out distressed noobs with my fat bankrole. I even like being chased by Icarus (sometimes) but I know that Icarus's user (like Tron style I guess) doesn't get carried away with it.

I don't like not being able to ask someone to lay off the new people for a bit because they are playing with their chat off. Why turn your chat off if you are not a griefer? Knowing that this is a game, why would you kill the same noobs in their home sector over and over again. Once or twice was enough to bankrupt them. Three times to teach them a lesson? Four or Five just to ruin the game for them I guess. If it's really a war, it was well over by the third hour of noob griefing.

I'm not sure what happened but somehow maybe some people became confused about the difference between themselves and their characters. My hope would be that in the future people can better distinguish between when their character is being a jerk (OK in Vendetta) and when they are being a jerk (not OK in Vendetta?)

Justice7: the only sectors that belong to ANY factions are 1/4 (Blue) 3/6 (Gold) and 2/12 (red) all others are neutral and cannot be claimed.

That statement betrays the fact that you yourself have ethics. "I feel" denotes a personal feeling that you are acting on as guidance. Like it or not, ethics are there, whether broad and general like Phoenix's two rules, or more detailed, like the (now defunct) [SYN] pirates.

So, the question is, whose ethics are you going to abide by? A pirate's? A law enforcement's? Self-centered ones? This is going to be a roleplaying game, might as well figure it out now, and if it's too hard to roleplay, use the same character strengths you possess in real life (which I think are already shining through, or glaring through).

Its a fps, not much of a rpg right now. Blow em all to hell.

In real world combat their are ethics. Ever hear about "war crimes"? Mabey we need a general code of conduct enforced by various indviduals. Sure, there would be unaffected territory but a few moral rules would be nice.

(has anyone noticed that pirates are often so rich they need no more money yet they still slaughter for cash all the time?)

Its a test. We test things from the perspective of the pirate :P
