Twitter is like a mini-blog. People use it to just give very brief updates about what they are doing, where they are, news tidbits, etc. I've heard its popular with people at conferences, so colleagues can find each other although they are dispersed across many events around a city.

The nice thing here is that you can set it up so that the updates the devs post to twitter will go to your IM.
