Yes, jump points are just one application of generalized "nav waypoints". Others will be intra-sector, and so on.

This isn't always the truth - during convoy escort missions, it happened to me more than once that my jump point was displayed in completely different direction (like ~60 degrees on a hypothetical plane) than where convoy was heading.
Maybe it was due to the fact that I entered the sector ~800m away from the convoy, as their direction was sort of away from me, and mine was away from them.

How is it that you ended up entering the sector from such a different location? Did you go to a station quickly and then rejoin them or some such?
No, I warped out of the previous sector together with the convoy, and very close to them (I do that because I just love the effect of 5+ warps at once).
