Fix the nick-problem.... (for the Devs)

This ain't working guys...

Just here a few minutes ago (and hes propebly still doing it), a person logged in and out of the game - creating chars called *the exact* same as other players... "Faking" their chars... A week ago (or around that time) someone logged on as "[NPCDEF]whatever"...

You can't be serios that this should be possible...

if you are going to fix this, i'd suggest that:

* one shouldnt be able to write non-viewable chars in the characternick (making it possible to create a char called exactly the same IN the same color as existing pl's)...

* If a nick is taken by one login - it should be for that login only (still have it possible to create other color chars with the same nick - but the original owner and *only* him/her can do that)

* and for heavens sake no "[NPC*" nicks... it wrecks any possibilities of creating advanced stat scripts etc...

If not... oooh no you don't ;)
We have problems enough with spies etc... This is an exploit far beyond many other things. For what i know - some could be wrecking my rep as i write this... For ppl who acually cares about this, it's a really bad thing...

Okey - this is it... until this gets fixed, i'm out...
if it doesn't get fixed - well that's just to bad for me, and the whole community...

Another thing with [NPS nick, I think you can bypass the system by typing <[NPS or something like that. Not sure.
PS, busmaster, don't get so pissed off.
That bug has always existed, and sometimes people abuse it.
It was WAY worth in 3.1 and earlier.
Jul 11, 2003 BusMasteR link
You're ofcause right in that blitz...

I think i'm doing a fine job at wrecking my own reputation - i really don't need for one to have the possibility of doing it for me =/

I was concerned when i saw the [NPC* thing, but this really shocked me.

BTW: if it were worst in 3.1 and before - they really should have done something about it by now... And yes i know development takes time, and efford - but such a big exploit should have been corrected when first found...

On another semi-realtive note: I just found out there was another Starwind in game... I'm "jean". I guess there's a "gene", too. Not an exploit, just a cosmic coincidence (and kinda funny). Although a lot of people thought we were the same person. Oh well.

/jean waves to gene

How could I forget the O and 0 thingy?
Looks almost the same.
Sometimes I looks simillar to l.
Jul 11, 2003 genka link
no, the O is square, and the 0 is round, now the S and the 5, in vendetta, they're exactly the same. Scary.
Jul 11, 2003 BusMasteR link
Yep - some1 tryed to do the a1k0n (alk0n) in vendetta it looks the nearly the same... It's really hard protecting against nicks that "look" like something/someone else, if not nearly impossible...

What just shouldn't be possible is to create a nick using special chars that wont be displayed. For an example:

This "UncleDave" dude logged on and said something - every1 thought it was dave at first (till he revealed himself), but when i "tested" my perlscript for checking the list of active players ingame, his nick came up: "&something;UncleDave&someotherthing;"... This should not be possible since there's no actual way, ingame, to discover this faking (not only making it possible, to wreck a players reputation, but also spying in a trusted players name)...

Most of them use <Nick> and speak with /me.
Jul 11, 2003 BusMasteR link
There's got to be a function checking if a nick already exist - implementing a check of characters used in the nick, shouldn't be the one giving the devs headeggs...

/me awaits and hopes to hear the great big, god like, voice of a dev going: FIXED...

It does check if the name does exist. You cannot have two peopel with the same name, and spaces are ignored, so there cannot be "Roguelazer" and " Roguelazer ". The game also checks for a couple of other things. But its darn near impossible to check for the difference between "CyberSeal" and "Cyber5eal". Ditto for "a1k0n" and "a|k0n". As for the NPC names, well, all the old [AI] names are reserved and some of the new [NPC] names are, but none of the [NPCDEF]. The most prevalent method of faking, though, is to make a "<Charname>" character and speak with /me. I think this used to be fixed, but it doesn't appear to be currently. Tell a guide if one's online and they'll do something for ya.

I say add < and > as naughty words to the name filter, that'll stop them.

Ewww, head eggs.

i would like to point out that i logged on as uncledave, altho i made it clear that i was not the true dave. i dont think i was the saem guy as the &somthing somthing guy...unless your making up hamster-poo.

Cos i just changed it to UncleDaue...looks VERY similar in game.

I deleted character, and didnt affect his reputation at all. i just did it bcos sum1 stole my char, and i was under the impression it was uncledave. somone said it was anyway. I wouldnt ruin daves reputation, i enjoy playing with the guy - heh, he even helped me migrate to red.

what are head eggs? I've heard of eggheads, but never head eggs.
Jul 11, 2003 BusMasteR link
RogueLazer... If you actually have READ my posts here you would know what and WHY i wrote my last post just above yours...

I KNOW THERE IS SUCH A FUNCTION - THEREFORE IT SHOULDN'T BE A PROBLEM CORRECTING THE DARN THING...

As for this game community - when even devs begin to mark ones language abilities, then it's really time for one to leave...

Farewell - i've put with too much now...
Jul 11, 2003 Suicidal Lemming link
If the wrong person gets mute, in this example, you, tell the guide that your not saying this but it is someone else, if you know what character in the name of the imposter is different, tell the guide. Yes you can talk to guides when you are mute, just hit tab when you have a blank chat message feild. (assuming you were talked to by a guide)
Jul 11, 2003 roguelazer link
1) Where did the devs mark ones language abilities?

2) I've seen a lot, but I've never seen one leave over a theoretical problem that actually doesn't hurt anyone. I've been impersonated, does that mean I should leave?
Jul 11, 2003 Leqiator link
Impersonation isnt that bad at all. Nuke exploits and station mining in wars are what really affect you. If people really know you, then they will recognise ur not acting right, and will know its not you.

And people who dont know you? Bollocks to them.

rogue:

read this:

<snip1: Busmaster> one giving the devs headeggs...

<snip2: Alkon> Ewww, head eggs.

To go on topic: Yes it happened to me to, and yes it did affect the game. I wont go away for it, but the person impersonating me was constantly usiong swear words and more of those untolerated nonsense. If a guide would have been on, then I would have gotten a warning, maybe even a mute. And this would really have affected because it seemed like the person "purpetrader" and me were 1 and the same. So when the guide would try to punish the other one, he would punish me.

And I know for 1 thing: It affects me ;).

And yes I hope theat they fix this, but as long asd they arent able to fix it, they should just delete the player that does it from their active acountnumber and block the IP adress. At least that will teach him to not mess with the devs work :D

PS: dont leave bussy, it is getting boring otherwise, with all those pirates and no traders to offer distraction from me trading :D

cheers
