Forum mod just said he can get to s0... Which means he's either a dev or a guide... Couldn't you just change his sector info in the player database, though?
Jul 30, 2003 Arolte link
Guides may or may not have actual in-game access. They could simply have a program that monitors the chat and activity of each (or all) the sectors. They could probably hop around different sectors by simply clicking on a tabbed interface or something. On the other hand they may actually be using their regular player accounts, but they'd have access to a /broadcast feature that would give them a "Guide####" name in the chat window.

I also believe the devs said that they'll have applications available for people who want to become Guides. Those plans probably changed thoguh, since this was announced back when 3.2 was supposed to be released. They either decided to hand pick the Guides on their own, or they've delayed the applications until a further release.

For the most part I think the Guides are devs. But I do think there are maybe one or two non-dev Guides on. I think a good candidate for a Guide would be someone who doesn't lose their temper so easily and someone who the devs have known for a while, so you could probably guess who they are in the game. Trust me, there aren't a lot of people in Vendetta who fits these characteristics.

For what it's worth though, I still don't like the idea that Guides work "behind curtains." I don't think a lot of others do either. Even if it's abuse-proof, I'm still feeling skeptical. Do the devs really have all that much time to monitor the Guides' activities? I doubt it. One thing I still don't understand is the number naming scheme. Guides have a number that corresponds with who they are at that given moment, but it doesn't do a whole lot of good if this number changes constantly for every time they log in or whatever.

While making them invisible allows them to give a sense that the servers are being monitored 24/7, it doesn't exactly help those who actually NEED help. Rather than hiding the fact that Guides don't have 24/7 coverage, maybe they should look into hiring enough Guides to do exactly that. Making them visible and giving them some identity that doesn't switch around constantly can also help protect the rights of the players. The players make the game happen, not the Guides. Me thinks the priorities are a bit backwards in that sorta way.

Sorry for going off topic and ranting. Pyro made me do it.

=b

/me waits for the Forum Moderator/Guide#??? to lock the thread

Arolte:

Keep waiting, I've never locked a thread because it was critical of the guides or myself. In fact, you have posted your position on this several times in the past and none have been deleted. However your post IS in the wrong place. Perhaps you could paste it in the "guides" thread? I can respond to your post more completely, but not in the wrong thread.

Pyro: The player-Guides don't have access to the database. All of the guide commands are in-game. It's the same interface you have, but with a few more commands.

Off topic, so sorry, but the Forum mod double posted! OMG!

on topic, yeah I've been to sc0, there isn't much there. just a station where you can buy most of the widgets for 1c and any ship and weapon (for normal prices). that's all. everything does have this eerie purple glow tho...

i would really like to go to s0 i would want to go to any dev sector i would do anything to go to a dev sector they sound pretty cool and everyone is talking about them so i will just wait like the others till the devs take me when i ask to go.
Aug 04, 2003 roguelazer link
Personally, since the devs cleaned out the special ships and weapons from s0, it's not my destination of choice. Nope, send me to sector 23 any day! (PS: Are all the dev sectors primes or is it just me?)
Aug 04, 2003 a1k0n link
I think it's just you, if you're prime. We use 22, and neither that nor 0 are prime.
Aug 04, 2003 roguelazer link
Darn, I thought it was 23. :) And I heard you used to use 13 once upon a time. :) :)

I've never been there but I have heard rumors. Legends speak of a great lidless eye that covers the entire sector blanketing it in a warped purple glow.

In the future I would like to see more themed sectors like that, accessible to the public, but very well hidden. (I am assuming these don't exist of course, pardon my naivetee if they do.) Sectors that look like Hell, and others that are populated by UFO bots and such.
