Combat tactics

Oct 31, 2003 Spellcast link
Ok, before we even begin, i don't want to see a whole list of flames about rocket ramming, it exists, deal with it.

what I want to know, (if you guys are willing to share them) is what tactics you have found useful in combat. whatever the style of combat, be it 1v1 duels or team fights and flag caps. How do you get the most out of your ships?

Personally (as anyone who has dueled against me will tell you) I back up a lot, I like to get a medium or low agility ship with some heavier weapons and make my opponent come to me. by picking my shots carefully and spending most of my time doging to try to stay alive, I find that I win a fair number of battles. I loose most often to a good pilot who can close with me in a hurry while still rolling and strafing to avoid my return fire. usually in a vulture or a hog. I am almost no use in an agile ship (i tend to overadjust when trying to aim).

Anyway, I'm interested in finding out what tactics others have found work well, and hopefully having a number of different styles posted on the boards might help ouyt new players as well, by giving them some pointers.

Depends on the target. I've got to fight someone a few times before I know how to fight them, and the pilots I can't beat change their style too often for me to learn it.

Some pilots never change their style, and while they may be pretty good, they're easy to take down if they use the same strategy over and over and over...

Aye, also changing weapons, tatics, and ships usually throws people for loops.

Here's a simple and oft used trick: load up a vulture with two tachyons and set the left to primary trigger and the right to secondary. Fire them slightly out of synch for a stream of green death!

Edit: Phaserlight's trick #2: set the mouswheel to "toggle flight mode"... reaching across to hit the " key wastes precious milliseconds ;).

Hehe, i use the arrow keys, so I bound Ctrl for that purpose.

i tend to go for randomness in my flight pattern, instead of flying to beat the pilot, i fly to beat the aimbot... does this make sense?

Aye to what Phaserlight said, but he's only half-developed the secret.

Bind primary 1 to left _AND_ right tachs, and secondary 3 to right tach only. Hold down first left mouse and then right, and then let up on the right. Voila, you will have them alternating while only holding down left mouse. Works with any energy weap, but gauss gets the most out of alternating fire.

Guass gets the least out of alt fire. With gauss you'd rather just shoot the first two at the same time and get too hits. Other ones are easy enough to dodge that alternating is good.

Steev89: That's the first step, learn to dodge to beat the aim bot.
The second step is to learn to fly such that you can hit someone who is beating the aim bot (most notably shoot at their sides)
The third step, learn to beat someone who is doing the first two.

-Depends on what you're going for I think. If you want a good spread Gauss does get the most. If you want every shot to count for its max potential it gets the least.

Or something like that.

Actually, I'm not making much sense.

/me takes a nap.
