New Player: Some Thoughts, Questions, Introduction

Jan 27, 2016 serenechaos link
Hello all, I recently downloaded VO on my Shield TV because it looked like an interesting spaceflight sim and was free (I'm a poor college student).

First things first: this game is very awesome. Flight is very enjoyable, combat and trade are rewarding, and the feel in-universe is incredibly immersive and real. There is a sort of pervasive feeling that I can't quite put my finger on of the game itself being "in progress", and almost abandoned, but the detail and interactivity is fantastic.

A little bit about me: I'm slow to be social, so I don't often say hello in chat or ask for help. But once I get used to a community, I tend to be very friendly talkative, and I try my best to be helpful and productive.

I'm absolutely horrible with spatial reasoning, visualization, and focusing on many details at once. Irl, I cannot draw to save my life, judge distances/lengths/sizes/volumes, picture outcomes or directional information (maps, which way I'll face after X turns, etc). So I should be a terrible pilot. I have to keep a dozen controls in mind, think about my orientation (also a problem IRL if ya know what I mean), direction/speed/multiple axes of movement, movement relative to targets. Somehow, not only am I actually half decent (still not great in combat), not only am I more comfortable and intuitive with Flight Assist disabled, I actually enjoy all of this. It's something I've never enjoyed before and it makes me feel very good about myself.

As I said, I'm on a Shield TV. I use the controller and don't have a keyboard for it yet, which means there are some commands I don't have access to (creating notes on sectors grrr) and some are just inconvenient. Typing takes forever; if you message me (Hnari), I will be slow to respond. I don't have any macros yet because I haven't talked enough to need particular phrases or commands multiple times.

I've been playing for about a week, still unsubbed. I just hit the cap on my last two licenses the other day. I'm literally flat busted until payday, but I'm looking forward to subbing.

Just from a glance, this place seems fairly empty, and up-to-date information is difficult to come by from Google searches. Specific information is especially hard; the wiki is fairly bare on a lot of subjects and most posts that come up are 2012 or earlier and speak in vague terms.

One of the things I'm most excited about for subscribing is constructing a CapShip. As I understand it, this is something like a 6-month commitment. I have a few questions; how exactly do I start this? Is there a mission line to start? How do capships work? I understand they have turrets that can be controlled individually, do they autofire when you're just steering? I read something about being able to leave it on any ship you have in the cargo, is that correct? How does docking with stations work for something that massive?

What other differences can I expect after switching to premium? No level cap, more missions, constructing a Trident, are there more changes? What will I notice right away?

Anyways, I'm really excited about this game and so far the community on there has been wonderful. I hope you guys are, too =P

Start here, though there are some third-party sites hosting information as well: http://www.vo-wiki.com/wiki/Manufacturing

Personal comment surplus to requirement - I doubt anyone knows or cares about what your IRL orientation means.

Hi there, welcome to the game!

There is a sort of pervasive feeling that I can't quite put my finger on of the game itself being "in progress", and almost abandoned, but the detail and interactivity is fantastic.

I'd love to hear more detail on this, if you end up with a more specific idea of what is contributing to that impression? The "in-progress" thing I can understand, but the "abandoned" thing is more of the concern. We have one of the most continuous update streams in the industry, usually every week or two, so it's unfortunate to hear we're giving that impression.

Just from a glance, this place seems fairly empty, and up-to-date information is difficult to come by from Google searches. Specific information is especially hard; the wiki is fairly bare on a lot of subjects and most posts that come up are 2012 or earlier and speak in vague terms.

The forums are pretty active, but General is lately not the most-active base, it tends to be Suggestions or other areas. Part of the "information" challenge you describe is that we've been evolving and changing the mobile business model fairly often (every 6 months or so), which has led to a lack of documentation on how that all works, until such a time as it's a bit more solid.

We've also been pretty quiet with the press for the last year or two, in the push towards VO 1.9.. which is currently running a few months late, but should be happening before long.

I'll let other people respond with the specifics of building capships and the like.. but this:

What other differences can I expect after switching to premium? No level cap, more missions, constructing a Trident, are there more changes? What will I notice right away?

As of right now, changing from F2P to premium subscription removes all level caps, as well as any need for "Crystal" currency (it basically disappears). It also gives you the ability to create a guild or serve on guild leadership, as well as full access to all other content in the game. Capship construction is higher-level than the current mobile caps, so it inherently unlocks this.

But more philosophically, premium subscribers get "everything". Our F2P model is evolving, so next month it could be a little different, but our subs will always be the gold standard of the VO experience. That is likely to involve a lot more "endgame" content as we move ahead. So while F2P might get a level-cap bump or something, higher-end content like capship construction, or (eventually) station construction, will either be much more the purview of the subscriber level. I don't want to speak in absolutes, a lot of this is fluid, but I expect there to always be a significant disparity between the two models, and the sub level will focus more on benefits of late/end-game content.

I'm curious whether your prejudice is against humour or introductions =P

@incarnate: Unfortunately, I cannot give you a much better explanation. It's a very vague feeling. It's certainly not based on a lack of updates, and I definitely get the impression that there is a lot of passion and effort going into this. It's more of a....quietness? I guess? If I ever am able to pin it down somehow, I'll let you know, but please don't think I see the team as lacking or invisible.

I'm actually curious, though, because I can't pay until next week at the earliest; is it worth doing very many missions before then, or should I wait so that I'm not wasting XP for my licenses?

serenechaos, you can correct me if I'm wrong. My guess is by "abandoned" you probably meant the "ghost town" feeling. The feeling that you get when you don't see very many players, and when you do see others, they are usually inwardly focused and absorbed with doing their little solo activities.

That's simply how it is in the nation spaces. You see more action in grayspace, where people can shoot at each other without repercussions.
Jan 27, 2016 serenechaos link
That's close. There are some nuances that feel more like unfinished-ness, but I think you're right that a lot of it is more of a ghost town sensation. Sorry if I gave the wrong idea.

"I understand they have turrets that can be controlled individually, do they autofire when you're just steering?"

Nope, currently the only ways turrets fire are if you or somebody else is manning the turret. The "somebody else" means anybody who has docked with your capship, and anybody you have invited to ride along without a ship using the /gunner command.

"I read something about being able to leave it on any ship you have in the cargo, is that correct?"

Yep.

"How does docking with stations work for something that massive?"

With massive docking bays, of course! Look more closely at capitols like Dau L-10 or Odia M-14, and you'll notice large boxy structures that are open at one end. Those are capital docks. Normal ships can use them too, but they're intended to handle capital ships. Of course, most stations are not equipped with these, so in those cases you'll have to rely on a cargo ship like the Behemoth to ferry cargo between your capital ship and the station.

Heya new player! Welcome to (as far as I am concerned) the best MMORPG! Just a heads-up, I'm a pirate, so I might extort money from you, steal your cargo, or kill you. But if you pay me or help me, I'm pretty much helpful enough :P.

I'm a poor college student

That's what I am, so we have something in common.
Edit: Ok, a school student

I don't really help new players a lot with a genuine interest, but if a person takes the time to post in the forum, that's a good thing! My interest in this is genuine, not just for making you as a target.

Have fun in this game, be cool, and my in-game name is pistachio. <----- THERE YOU KNOW IT

I too started VO as a college student (at the end of my fourth year) back in 2003.

Welcome :-)

Hello, and welcome to VO!

I was going to write a post about how you might get shot, and to just enjoy the experience and that it happens and stuff, but instead I'll just say:

Yarrr!

Hello Hnari, I am glad to hear that you are enjoying the game! Just don't mind the killjoys too much and you'll have a great time. Regarding the game information: If you manage to get your chat situation worked out, there's almost always people online in-game who can give you up-to-date information about almost any aspect of Vendetta, so don't be afraid to ask.

VO lacks a humanistic touch. There are no faces anywhere.

Yes, I would really love to design and see my character, maybe move around inside stations. Maybe even straight Star Trek video communications between ships (perhaps default to characters, butbhave an option for live webcam?).

Believe it or not, this is actually one of the things I really like about VO. I have no idea if this is intentional, or due to limited resources, or w/e, but over the years it just kind of grew on me. It's about you... playing the game... (get it?)

I agree that the player should not be sucked into the game with live web cams and such. Voice chat is already a bit too personal to my taste (but when flying chat doesn't cut it).

I wouldn't mind if you could design/upload an avatar like on many forums, and that is displayed (optionally and/or small) when you target someone. That might help personalize the character a bit (without drawing in the player). It would also help if you are on group chat to see the avatar displayed of the person talking (preferably with a little static :))

That would be one likely outcome, yes. The system for this would either need to be controlled (I think EVE has a character editor) or some sort of approval process of user-supplied images. Both are time consuming, though the latter could be implemented sooner.

The big empty sack you are feeling is because they spent a year or so touching trader penis, and most of the people used to be around got pretty bored by it.

Perhaps this is just nostaliga, but the pirates used to keep trade working, now its all automated, just google the game. You dont even have to worry about pirates anymore.

I spent years fighting against it, but those ****ers pay the bills, so we deal with thier hole

Imagine eve online without any pirates, and no one undercutting you. Thats pretty much this now. It went full carebear. The people who didnt like getting pirated pay a lot more than us. so they decided the direction. Its sad, they know it. They cant regret it now because its thier only source of income.

Tramshed, as usual, I have no idea what you're talking about, except that you're grumpy and bitter.

Anyway, player counts are continuing to rise overall, as are subscriptions. So.. hooray.

Meanwhile, I've been burning energy on changes and content that seems more specifically pirate focused? Or, at least possibly beneficial. Of course, there's more faction-defense stuff coming too, and probably some trade stuff, so basically you can spin perspectives any way you want, but I've never really backed any one play style any more than others (if it seems so, because of timing, that's just a side-effect of the way software development works).

The whole notion that A) the traders are the majority of who pays to keep the game going, and B) that we explicitly go out of our way to support them because of this.. is totally nuts. And wrong.

Final note: We have new Forum Guidelines that it might be good to peruse.
