would That cause me to get a 28k ping?

The switch our game server is plugged into is spuriously disconnecting our port for roughly 30 seconds at a time, which is highly annoying. I'm guessing it's either re-negotiating half/full duplex on the port, or it's just a piece of crap.

Hopefully this will be fixed tonight.

Its maybe the calbe. Ive seen this before at some of my boxes. Of the cable is too long or simply <crap> after time x the nic will fail. If you use a shorter one this problems goes away (for now) but maybe that you need to change the nic.

Yeah, except all the other machines on the switch are seeing the same thing. Maybe the switch uplink cable is bad. Hmm.

Are you sure the plug from the AC adapter is in snugly? I've seen monitors act all wonky or not work at all because the power cable was loose...

Its always the powercable :D

Curse you powercable, curse you :D

cheers

is it just me or are these "lag spikes" still occuring?

It gets kinda annoying when I think I've successfully fended off a NPC only to explode and find out that they killed me 30 seconds ago while the game was showing them flying away....

or running to a wormhole, hitting enter repeatedly, with nothing happening for 30 seconds, until randomly (?) exploding.

This scenario has happened at least 5 times in the past two days, and is getting pretty darn annoying...

Just a heads up that it's still occuring. Yeah there's some major lag bursts every 40-50 seconds that seems to affect everyone in the game. Is it broken again or is it still not fixed?

=/

Yes, I know. The stupid thing was never rebooted. I'm still prodding people, although I guess I could just go down there and do it myself. There are actually two switches and one is deemed unnecessary, but I'm not sure which is actually causing the problem. So there is some vague plan in place to re-do that subnet on one single switch.

Arghh, well do it quickly. It's highly annoying to have these HUGE bursts of lag in which you can do nothing. I've been killed in a prometheus by a 75 bot this way, just to give you an idea of how long the lag time is. I had already killed the damn thing on my screen, but nooo. explode.

Also, the NPCDEFS seem to be running into each other quite a lot.

I lost two ships and a s**tload of money just by passing by s6. It's just downright ridiculous. The bots shouldn't have such an advantage over server side lag.

Welcome to a dialup users world Arolte =)
Opps my wife opened a web page, bang die to a 75 bot lol

Yeah.. it's suddenly especially bad tonight. Apparently the switches were rebooted, but it didn't do a darn thing. I guess they're being rewired, but I have no ETA. sigh. I know, this sucks a lot.

No, it's a good thing. I need to study and this removes temptation. Good job garbage truck, or ISP, or switches, or whoever is responsible.

Someone up there must be looking out for me at the expense of you all. Sucks to be you.
Dec 10, 2003 sherman link
That does it, I'm sneaking into the guildsoftware offices myself and replacing their switch with this old 50 port HUB I have laying around.

No one will notice a thing.

LOL @ Sherman

Magus, it's quite the opposite for me. When the reset happened I had so much crap to do. Now I've got like two or three days free before my next final, but I'm cursed with this lagged server. I swear, it's a conspiracy!
Dec 10, 2003 Arolte link
Okay, it seems to be fixed now. Hopefully it'll stay that way. Those damn bots better stay away from me if I ever lag too.

=b

Devs, just wondering: what kind of router do you guys use?
Dec 10, 2003 a1k0n link
Our game server is hooked up to a switch that isn't ours. It also isn't in our office. The switch happens to be of the Foundry FastIron series (and there is also a TurboIron which is now bypassed; this may have fixed the "lag spikes".) One had an uptime of 410 days, the other 520ish.
