Possible way of cutting costs for guild

I don't know how well this would work, and i've floated ideas similar in the past, but maybe with a little tweaking to the server, dedicated users could help cover the costs of hosting the vendetta server. I think i read somewhere the hosting at the colocation facility was 300 bucks a month(?), which is no small amount of money. Perhaps players who have dsl, cable, or t1, etc., and with server that could handle the load, could host individual sectors. People with the most bandwidth host the most active sectors, while other people with lower bandwidth could host the less active sectors.
Unfortunatly this would probably mean slower load times, servers spread across the country/globe, and some unreliability.
These select individuals would be entrusted with providing the most reliable servive possible as well as maybe the actual source for the game server(?).
Devs, could this work?
Players, are there enough of us to do this sucessfully?

Pretty far-fetched idea, i know. But if I could host a sector from my puny p1 server i'd do it in a flash.

I think I heard that the eventual goal is to have the sector servers able to run on seperate hardware. I wonder how close this is to working.

I was thinking how cool it would be if the end game allowed privately hosted sectors. The universe could be huge. To overcome the reliability issues, you would be able to probe a sector and see the motd, uptime and owner before you hopped into a crashed sector. I guess that part belongs in suggestions.

jub0r, i had the same idea. The devs have already considered it tho, and didn't want to do something like that.

I wonder if it would be possible to host a game server in a similar way that bit torrent works. That would kick ass. It would save A LOT of $$$.

There are problems with BitTorrent though... The U/L speed would need to be capped, as a 40 KB/S upload eats up ALL my bandwidth for the entire house, even when I can get 70 KB/S download going and still let my Dad surf on another computer.
