Roleplaying in the Vendetta universe

Over time playing, I've noticed that fewer and fewer people actually roleplay in Vendetta. It seems to have a great deal to do with the fact that most people are under the impression that this is Space Quake, and treat it as such. Is this how Vendetta plans to be marketed? I know I would not pay for Vendetta in it's present condition, I'm a little too tired of a few players ruining the experience for the rest of us. What is being done about this? WIll ships eventually cost more? Will weapons actually be a worthwhile thing to spend time choosing? Will there be sectors for those that dont want to participate in the bloodfest, and just explore? I'd really like to see Vendetta become a RPG, instead of it's current form, SpaceDoom XIII.

That said, I had a thought of creating a sub-community of people that are interested in roleplaying. Not a guild, not a controlled group, just a group of people (or even single characters for that matter) that have said, "I want to roleplay, and leave SpaceQuake behind on this character" Is there anyone that wants something like this?

<edit> I'm not saying the DM factor in the game has to go, I'm just saying I think it dominates right now, and it's not what I believe the game should be focusing on,(other than testing). I love running around killing stuff just as much as the next guy, but it gets tiring when there's nothing else.</edit>

I agree, and always love roleplaying (usually radical) different characters. (read tell about your char thread)

Oh, I love roleplaying in Vendetta, and have always been.

I've already talked to you, but I'm interested. I'd also be interested in talking with people about possible self imposed restrictions to make playing Vendetta a more RPGish experience.

I've tried roleplaying. Yet I must admit, it is very hard in the current sociaty. The global chat seems to make the game seem more like a chat room at times rather then a game. Making the global chat a secondary chat to sector chat would be a better idea.

Sir Frog has proven that role playing is not only not difficult, but also quite fun. (Although sometimes I wonder about things like whether he should say "would thee/thou" or "wouldst thee/thou" and other such phrases.)

Celkan has proven that you can RP serious characters without losing your enjoyment of the game either.

It's not hard. It's fun. Join in.

the trick is finding other people to roleplay with... perhaps a method could be devised to let people know when you're roleplaying?

in character example: <Outrider> IC: drop your cargo or I'll blow you to kingdom come!

out of character example: <Outrider> OOC: the SM have a serious attitude problem...

Ok, these are just examples but you get the idea. Any thoughts? For those who signed up (and someone should probably make a updateble list like the frig treaty list) we should agree on a system maybe?

[edit] ok, here's the list I made up,

I'll try to keep it updated [/edit]

We do want to foster this kind of gameplay. Things like.. role-playing only chat-channels would obviously be of benefit. But, if you guys think of anything else that would improve this aspect of the game, feel free to post it in the Suggestions forum.

Separate servers would be nice, but I'm going to assume you guys don't have the stuff for that... If you do, though, an RPG or unstable (e.g. development) server for us to use would be great. :P

DR: My suggestion to the in/our of character problem, is make a single character that you ONLY roleplay on, so there's no confusion

I think it's best to assume that we'll all be on the same server. But.. given that, if you guys think of anything.. :).

I feel like a role-playing only channel sort of defeats the purpose of role-playing. You won't really be acting out a different character if you keep switching between two channels. At the very least people won't think of you as the character you're RPing. They'll think of you as yourself who happens to be RPing a character every 3 or 4 seconds. I don't know if that made any sense.

maybe add more rpg elements like timed communications, when you send a message, its stored in memory and the locations (in sectors) of each player is flagged. and then the shortest route is traced between your sector and target sector, adn the message takes a bit longer before its displayed on a person's chat window in a further sector. Also player names on ships would be nice, liek an advanced beacon thingie. also we should have like an Anti Pk clan that puts all pkers into a prison sector or something. little stuff liek that adds up

deffo! yeah, count me in, i love the rpg aspect of vendetta.

/me signs up

have to hang on till i get broadband tho =(

an idea to implement into the game which i (? think! ?) would be simple is to give each ingame entity a "dimension" property (just a number).

that way, the same server can host a universe with multiple "dimensions" which users can hop between.

the game would have to be modded so that it responds to obects only within the current "dimension". e.g. if you are in "dimension" 13 the engine only renders objects with their dimension flag set to 13, the collision detection routine only collides with entities in dimension 13, and so on.

i know its not perfect, and that you would still recieve information for objects in other dimensions over your connection etc but its a way to seperate the universe without putting too much load on the server or clients or buying a new server completely.

anyway, i'll quit spewing randomly stupid ideas onto the boards now =)

hopefully someone catches my drift!

cool idea asphy, i dunno if it'd be implementable without a good deal of work though

I dunno if there are ANY aspects of roleplaying now....(basically we're playing a persistant MMOG, there is no roleplayign here. We can chat, thats it, we got no skills and no where to use em, maybe we need a discussion of how role playing "should" be implimented as we got nothing now. So until there are actually some elements of roleplaying, yes, indeed, we are playing spacequake, if not in name, then in practice.
Its hard to roleplay when there are no supporting elements in the game.

Wow. All this time I've been pretending to be a space pilot flying around in a foreign universe, trading and fighting and I didn't even know I wasn't role-playing.
