Recognizing a Border Patrol Unit

Apr 11, 2005 UIT Border Patrol link
Recently, several dishonorable pirates have altered their IFF in a deliberately misleading way, to impersonate and devalue existing Border Patrol pilots. These pirates are often indistinguishable from normal Border Patrol except for the special encoded BP IFF key. (This IFF key is verifiable by entering the /charinfo screen for our pilots, it is set to broadcast membership in the "Border Patrol" guild.)
These pirates often use devaluation tactics such as the following:
* Broadcasting pirate hails.
* Attacking merchants or other pilots who are not Kill On Sight or committing an act of piracy.
* Spreading false information about Border Patrol.
* Forcing pilots to move to a specific sector.
In addition, all Border Patrol pilots are 3/3/2/1/0 or 4/3/2/1/0 in levels, and fly Vulture MkIII or Wraith MkIII. All Border Patrol pilots use TPG Sparrows as their primary weapon and equip a heavy battery. No Border Patrol pilot has a Trader badge or a mentor badge.
Units known to be spoofed: KL-7539a, DH-3249p, PD-3821q, QR-3512s.
If you see a Border Patrol pilot performing any suspicious activity as outline above, please let us know in channel 200 so we can deal with the problem!
Thank you for your co-operation.

Apr 12, 2005 LeberMac link
In the darkened computer controlroom of [IA] headquarters, LeberMac is using the "Deep Blue" Universal AC (Automatic Computer) to analyze the emergence of this mysterious "Border Patrol" force.

LeberMac examines the galactic map, rotating above him in 3D view: "The UIT border at Azek is 2 jumps away from Sedina. Why would UIT nationals patrol in unclaimed space?"
He chuckles to himself as he sets down the control panel, "Thanks to the current level of piracy in that area, you rarely see UIT transports headed through sector B-8 in Sedina, anyway."

LeberMac shuts the massive hypercomputer down and is left in the silent room with his thoughts. "...The fact that known pirates are spoofing Border Patrol idents is telling. It seems that there is at lease SOME tenuous connection, perhaps a breakaway arm of the pirate clan has assumed secret identities, but for what purpose?"

Meditate on this, I will...
