Behemoth Convoy Run- your thoughts

This saturday Genka wanted to run an event he had been planning for a day or two, namely to get some pirates together and attempt to blockade Latos (yes, the three wormholes). Joyce had agreed to help him by attempting to run the blockade.

Anyway, things didn't go as planned for some reason (maybe Genka can come up and explain the problems on the pirate side, I for one know Joyce took a little too long in hiring her escorts) and the thing was called off. But by then, Joyce had already amasses quite the convoy: Bronab, Yasumoto and herself on Behemoths, with LeberMac, Pilot 13, and others (sorry, forgot your names; old age and all that. Might name you further below though).

And some pirates and [SCAR] members were around (tumblemonster had left shortly before, though): BUNNY, Mecha Touriaus, sleon, and others whose name I forget too, were there to try and stop us from doing the run.

The run itself was the fabled luxury goods run from Azek to Odia that yields nearly 300% profit per crate. We were set to do at least enough trips to move 1000 crates and then sell them all in one fell swoop.

The trips began, and the thing began to gather momentum of its own; people began to arrive and join both sides, and the pirates changed tactics often, sometimes trying to blockade as many wormholes as possible, other times conecntrarting on a single one. Most notably, Shape arrived and roused more pirates or would-be pirates to action, not to mention he proceeded to mop the floor with the defenders (he even accused IA of being the brains behind the operation, when se saw Lebermac); Nerde Verde arrived late in the game to aid the escorts and provide a much-needed counterbalance for Shape, who seems to have fought and triumphed against 3-to-1 odds often. Zoras Ock also arrived near the end and promptly moved to attack the pirates, who under Shape's direction had blockaded the Sedina wormhole to Odia; Shape in fact coordinated the pirates using his knowledge of the sectors and wormholes, making for surprise attacks and ambushes along Sedina. Finally, RelayeR, who had been present since the start, was at fisrt curious about the convoy and tried to blow a moth up to see what we were moving, but later she actually spoke to Joyce and decided to help the convoy instead.

By the time the 1000 crates were moved (1470, actually), the traders had lost three moths and all escorts had died at least twice. The same can be said of the pirates, though I lack hard numbers. LeberMac had had a field day at first, but once Shape came in, the escorts changed tactics from straight fights to diversionary strikes so the Behemoths could slip through.

I dare say fun was had by all, specially since the furball in Odia B-13 kept going strong for a while after the event itself had ended. I'd like the people who took part to chip in and tell of their experience, since this seems like a very easy event to set-up and run, and thus we could add it to the list of weekly events ingame, specially since no Guides or Referees are needed.

This sounds like a great event, I'll have to catch the next one!

Well this explains a lot. There I was, flying my moth to Odia last night on my way to host The Deneb Run, completely unaware of the blockade, when I encountered 3 pirates at the wormhole to Sedina. Sleon tagged me a few times as I warped through, but that was it.

Anyway, if you're planning to run this again, I'd love to participate more formally, and maybe bring a few buddies.

Huh. Well, here's what I think happened on the pirate side:
The day before (namely, friday) I tried spreading a bit of word about the impending blockade of latos. Yoda had some stupid excuse I really didn't want to get into, but all in all eight people, not counting myself, agreed to show up around 20:00 server-time. I logged on around 18:00 and spent the next two hours fidgeting because a grand total of 0 of the sign-ups were on. Around 19:30, in a stroke of luck Zoras Ock logged on and I figured the day was saved.

And that's where things got really fun.
At 19:50 I called a roll-call and was pleasantly surprised when no-one answered. Why, yes! It would seem that Zoras logged off! Hurrah!
Now, I'm not one to break my word, so off I went to Latos, hoping that at least one of the eight bastards I'd signed the day before would show before I completely broke down and started crying because no-one loves me. And so, alone and forgotten, I ravaged the poor defenseless traders that float through Latos about once a day until some crazy buggers decided it was a good idea to shoot me. A wee little battle ensued, with some sort of sides forming. Strangely enough, I didn't seem to be on either side, and as such, had to make the long trip between sedina and latos quite often.

Around 20:37 I lost all hope and logged off, thanking the fortunes for making me the mastermind of this wonderful event. Then I cried a bit. Here's a list of the peoples that said they might come. The ones that arrived in the thirty minutes before I left have a one in the box thingy:

MysticRogue [ ]
Norsey [ ]
Gavan [ ]
Niki [ ]
Hugh Jass [ ]
Zoras Ock [ ]
Shape [ ]
Martin [ ]

Yep. Great turnout.

Heh. I think n00b logged as soon as I splashed him at the wormhole from Latos to Azek. He was frustrated and just didn't come back.

We had a 2-on-1 on tumblemonster and finished him off right after n00b, and he logged since he had somewhere else to be as well.

BUNNY attempted to be threatening in B-8, but there was really no worries until after the 5h or 6th run, when word started getting around. Everything was going swimmingly (even allowing me breaks to feed the kids and make a snack for myself...) until Shape showed up. :(

We had been able to pull off a couple of transits of the Odia B-13 WH to sedina with Shape active, we would just engage him and not give him a chance to attack the behemoths. This worked well unti he decided to call in reinforcements, and every serco/pirate came out of the woodwork and camped the Odia B-13 WH.

We knew they were waiting for us, we had a strategy planned, but things got a little chaotic. We had almost cleared Sedina O-6, Joyce and Bronab were waiting for the signal to proceed, and I'm locked up with Lin or Mecha or someone when I see Bronab warp in to Sedina O-6, unannounced except for his "oops" over Group chat.
Even more stunning, he decides to go through the WH and plow on through to Odia B-13...

... where about 6 fully-armed and ready pirates, led by Shape, were waiting. I warped in and Bronab was already damaged to 30%. I did what I could to peel someone off, but was dispatched by someone's flares. <sigh> Bronab lost his cargo and luckily respawned in Odia.

Apparently Joyce made it thru to the destination, and was holding position for an interminable length of time, as Nerde Verde, Holdan, Maso, Monk, a few others and I all kept the folks in B-13 busy. I went thru several ships as well as did several pirates. I stuck around until Joyce got thru for the last time, and then decided to call it a night because it was dinnertime by then.

Fun time! However, coordination needed to be better. Several things were learned:
1. Transports need to pay attention to when their escorts say it's safe to warp. (Hehe)
2. Escorts need to learn to break off when their transport is thru the danger zone and not waste time trying for a PK.
3. Shape is good, even in his stupid Hog. You pirate bastard. Someone bring flares to finish him off next time, OK?

Hehe I never said I'd make it. I said i wasn't sure. That's stupidly early in the morning for me. :P

haha, we'll bring more AGT's next time to deal with the diversions.

We had a few get a bit overanxious when someone entered the sector.

3 AGT's on a rev C is overdoing it :).

And I'll have you know that that stupid hog took out a moth solo.
Bronab's :).

which I was actually very surprised by, BUNNY was sending us recon info, and everything suggested an escorts first approach. Then suddenly:

Useradd: 75604

And I'm blasting for the opening wh, hoping to take out nerde before he has time to get into the action. And suddenly! its a Moth!

Much fun was had. Though Nerde was quite the nuisance, that Rev C just won't die!

Was one of the most entertaining fights I've had in a long time.

We must do it again. Seeing as if we had had more posihogs, none of you would have made it past the wh.

(Niki, Martin, Gav, I'm lookin at you :) )

EDIT:

Thanks go to my fellow pilots:
sleon (heavy support/repairs)
BUNNY (rocket woman/recon)
ferskingen (Taur/AGT support, CLM)
Mecha Touriaus (Rev C action)
Zoras Ock (Always right where he needed to be with the Posis)
a few more here and there who I'm currently blanking on, but whom I KNOW I owe big time.

And I have to figure out how to get a working microphone, coordinating and combat is just too hard. Skype would have been ideal for this, but I can't seem to get my mike to pick up more than a whisper

And I said I would try to be there as well, it sounds like a lot of fun and I will try harder next time. Just the timing is quite a bit earlier than I normally log on.

Thing is, this could be made so it can be run on a whim, at whatever time, so people can always play it regardless of their time slot.

I'm still waiting to hear from some people, though.

I like the Idea, and would have showed if I could have, well, at least I never said I would :P

Im always down for shooting at a moth or two, but I tend to find I work better solo, once I join a group, the **** hits the fan, as everyone spends more time typing, and not enough time looking at the +toplist/verbose output :P

I also hate voice chat :P either a) I cant understand anyone, and have to ask for several repeats, or b) no bugger can understand me (and skype is way too network intense for my liking)

Shape... just to let you know, I never use AGT. I always go Megaposi instead.

Yeah... I asked Mecha for orders once I entered the sector... but I saw no Leber to kill.. which made me sad.

When our timing on the jumps was good, we got enough defenders in place to keep the pie rats busy. When our timing wasn't so good... that's when I found out how long I could keep Shape, Mecha and ferchrissakes (or however that was spelled, not enough sleep) busy on my own.

Next time I'll need to invite more guests to the party. Wasn't a big enough brawl ;)

'twas fun :) Count me in for next time.

I just happened to log on and didn't have a clue to what was going on. Therefore, I just wandered aimlessly in B-8, reported if anyone was present and ocssionally fought(and usually died) to a pierat.

Isn't that how you always play VO, moldyman?

Shape: re ur mic: Dunno ur h/w or OS but have a good look in ur soundcard mixer. I assume u know all about selecting the capture source and un-muting it, but many soundcards also have a "Mic gain", "Mic boost" or "Input gain" switch which you need to turn on to get a decent level. Even a cheap mic should give u decent volume, it will distort ur voice to the point of incomprahensibility but it should be loud ;)
Oct 11, 2005 Shapenaji link
I've got OS X 10.4 and I can't seem to find a place to adjust those soundcard settings. The things I have found and adjusted, had no effect at all. So I'm actually assuming that it might be soundcard related right now.

But we LIKE you to be unable to coordinate your team properly, Shape! No need to change that!

Yes, Shape, please drop your system down to 10.0.1 and delete all OpenGL drivers in order to maximize compatibility with your audio-in port.

Commander MoldyMonk, I do hope you will have a chance to participate in this event next time. Sounds right up thr CDC's ally.
