Vendetta forum RPG: gauge of interest

Nov 04, 2005 Phaserlight link
I've been toying with the idea of running a modest Vendetta forum RPG here in the RP forum (how appropriate). You know, the games those nerdy-types play with dice and paper and character sheets. The rules would be grossly simple, the game focusing mainly on story progression and character development. For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, here's a good example:

http://www.sluggy.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=12&sid=9011b31d9ca2bcf11da4879ebd09f368

I've had a couple ideas for fanfics I wanted to post, but I always find it much more fun when other fans take an active part in shaping the outcome of the story. All locations would be in the Vendetta universe; players might find themselves in a firefight along the corridors of Bractus Stronghold, or on a mission to the surface of Terra II, or in a dogfight around a hidden wormhole in Odia.

I'd take no more than 6 players to begin with, although I'd expect a fairly high mortality (and consequently, turnover) rate. All action would take place here in the RP forum, but I'd spruce up the game thread with screenshots and other pics.

Well, whaddaya think? Good idea, bad idea, incredibly nerdy idea? I think it would be a fun way to explore some of Vendetta's backstory and innaccessible locations *cough*planets*cough*

AFAIK this has never been done on these forums before, but from the other story threads here I know y'all have good imaginations and a grasp of the english language, which is all that is needed.

Post here if you're interested. This isn't a sign up thread, just a gauge of interest before I waste a couple weeks setting up a campaign.

allow me to start.

It had been a long day for Boro-Ke Fanda. His ship was in desperate need of repairs, and the closest station was farther than he felt he could take it. His escorts were all long gone, and the enemy was stirring. He reflected upon his poor decision to venture so far into Itani territory. It was foolish really, thinking that he could find a relic of his ancestors hidden among these stars. He had heard the story from his grandfather, Starga Duji. Starga had been a captain of the Serco Armed Forces. He loved to tell stories about his time in the service. Now Boro-Ke was off chasing the dream that one of his stories had sparked so long ago. This is that story...

Cool. Nerdy, but not intoorably so. I might cosider joining in myself.

Oh, and wait up there who? me?, the signup thread hasn't even been made yet. wouldv'e thought you had learned to hold your horses after the spike fiasco, but I guess not. Nice little short, all the same tho.

Erm, sometimes this stuff is neat, but in this environment full of ananzis and zamzx ziks and genkas, I think it's an exercise in futility... allow me to demonstrate by adding to Who? Me?'s post above...

... Boro-Ke was not a smart man, and upon undocking in Sol II, he ran into the same asteroid that had claimed his even-less-smart grandfather and impacted with a spectacular shower of atomized xi-rite alloy. The explosion echoed throughout the sector, and garnered the attention of a ceratin itani trader.

The crafty itani Gorobah Snarken was nearby in his Behemoth, "The Mastodon." Expertly skimming the surface of the asteroid, he scooped up the scrap metal and cargo of the departed Boro-Ke Fanda and sold it for a tidy profit in the Sol II station.

It rocks too!

By the way, it was completely freeform. We didn't plan it ahead at all.

I'm in.

If you can pull it off, my hat's off to you. In my experience, these things either peter out and die or blow up espectacularly(sp?) early on. Any which way go for it, the most you'll waste is time.

*steeples fingers*

eeexcellent.... seems like there's enough interest to give it a shot. Won't be anything super fancy, but we'll see how it goes. Keep an eye out on this board the next week or so for a signup thread. It will be first come first serve, and I'll be capping the number of players at 6.

That's a great thread, but this game would be different in several respects, most importantly the six players will be posting their character's actions and decisions, not what actually happens. Third person, present tense.

For example, instead of posting:

"Leber's Valkyrie streaks down the narrow canyon, causing the three pursuing Vultures to crash as they attempt to follow"

One would post:

"Leber pilots his Valkyrie into the canyon, hoping to shake off his pursuers in the rocky terrain."

Then I roll some dice and post:

"Leber expertly guides his Valkyrie into the narrow canyon, the Vultures screaming after in hot pursuit. Two out of the three vultures crash and burn as they attempt to enter the canyon, one is still on Leber's tail. A couple fiery green neutron bursts flash past Leber's cockpit and impact the canyon wall. A fork in the canyon rapidly approaches, the left hand turn leading into a yawning cavern, the right hand turn down a narrow gulley."

See the difference? In a nutshell, the players post what they want their characters to try, and I resolve what actually happens.

INCREDIBLY nerdy.

Count me in!

Has anyone seen Team America? SOoo funny...
"They burned the oil fields, and my family, and my goats. And if you don't believe me, then shoot me now. Or else, I'll have to put a Jihad on you too."
"You've got Balls. I like balls."

You have to see it.

Oh, and who?me? and Leber, I don't think that's quite what Phaserlight meant. Probably something more like:
You walk into a bar and see George Bush standing there. What do you do?
A) Shoot him with a pistol
B) Shoot him with an AK47
C) Shoot him with a sniper rifle
D) Go psychotic and karate chop him to death

[EDIT] Phaserlight, you beat me to it. I swear your response wasn't there when I wrote mine just a minute ago. Hmm...

Um, OK I'll try it. However I don't expect it to go smoothly. Like Beolach said, more ways to waste time at work.

oh i see, so its not like where one person starts the story, and another one picks it up and keeps going, etc etc?

well then im confused.
