Are we having one today or not?

*slaps Monk awake*
Dec 03, 2005 Celkan link
MonkofAkan is having computer problems today, so I think that if there will be a Run today Joyce will be running it.
Dec 03, 2005 Dark Knight link
Ahhh... That explains it. Same time as usual?

TGFT and EnB will again be hosting The Deneb Run this weekend at 2 AM GMT Sunday. Please check /time if you are confused about GMT.

I will be continuing the No Valks rule this week. However, we will be returning to the traditional CLOCKWISE race around the universe.

All citizens are welcome to race, there is no entrance fee, and 4 Million credits in prizes are available. Some of it could be yours, but only if you race!

Once again, the rules are:

1) Racers must race from Odia M14 through Deneb heading clockwise back to Odia M14.
2) Race starts in Odia M14 near the station.
3) Contestants must be within 100m of me before the start
4) No shooting before I start the race.
5) You die and you're out (so no /exploding)
6) All weapons and ships allowed, except Valks.
7) First person to get back and dock at Odia M14 wins the first prize. (2 million credits)
8) Second person back gets 2nd place prize (1.2 million credits)
9) Third person back gets 3rd place prize (800k credits)
10) No Valkyries allowed.

Obviously, a Fast Charge battery and decent ship is recommended.

Please reply to this thread if you intend to race.

Joyce Sanders will be running this race.

P.S. - @ DK, I had personal RL issues today. Parents suck.

Announcing the results of The Deneb Run #23, sponsored by EnB and TGFT.

The Pilots
----------

Dragon of Fire: Serco, commander of EnB, seasoned veteran and repeat winner of The Deneb Run, he was the only pilot to finish last week's race.

LeberMac: Itani member of the Coalition of Itan, a long-time participant in the Race with an important number of victories. He last participated in the Deneb Run #19.

Krashis Merala: Serco, has participated in a couple of Deneb Runs now, his last being #19.

MonkofAkan: Itani, member of the Coalition of Itan, a seasoned veteran and repeat winner of The Deneb Run with 3 consecutive wins, he last participated in the Deneb Run #20.

Dr. Lecter: Serco SCAR member, he participated in last week's Deneb Run.

fooz2916: UIT pilot, council member of the Cerberes Defense Council and veteran racer, he last participated in the Deneb Run #21.

John Rambler: UIT pilot, this was his first time participating in the Deneb Race.

Aureus: Itani pilot, new to the Deneb Race.

Harpo: Itani pilot whose last participation was in the Deneb Run #16.

The Race
--------
The counter ran down, the referee fired, and the racers were off. A storm between the starting sector and the wormhole to Sedina quickly split the racers in two, with Harpo, fooz2916, MonkofAkan and Dr. Lecter taking an early lead and racing furiously to the faraway wormhole. MonkofAkan was the first to cross over to Sedina with the other three close on his heels.

MonkofAkan was actually overtaken by the other three racers when racing for Latos, this time with Harpo in the lead, while the second group of racers took a much safer path across Sedina. LeberMac led this second group and was quickly making up for the time lost in the storm. Ananzi's Caytyves Guild had set up a field of mines across the Latos wormhole, damaging three racers, but none was knocked out of the race.

Fooz2916 was the first to enter Ukari by a small margin, almost racing neck to neck with Harpo. Dr. Lecter crossed into Ukari in third place, followed by MonkofAkan and LeberMac still far behind. Krashis Merala, Dragon of Fire, Aureus, and John Rambler were all behind LeberMac, valiantly trying to catch up.

Still fighting for the lead, fooz2916 entered Helios while Harpo chose to cut through Initros. Dr. Lecter and MonkofAkan, fighting for the third spot, also chose to enter Initros. Behind them, LeberMac, Dragon of Fire and Krashis Merala had left Aureus and John Rambler behind, trying still to catch up with the leaders; all three of them chose Initros, too, as the best way to stay in the race.

As fooz2916 entered Pyronis, Harpo was approaching Rhamus with Dr. Lecter right behind and MonkofAkan too. Behind them, the trio of Krashis, LeberMac, and Dragon of Fire was closing in, while Aureus decided to fly through Helios. John Rambler, the tail gater, began what was to become a series of long silences where no one knew where he was.

Harpo was overtaken in Rhamus both by Dr. Lecter and MonkofAkan, who took the first and second place; to add injury to insult, fooz2916 also managed to slip by him and enter Dantia, sending Harpo plummeting to fourth place. As for the second group, Krashis was furiously attempting to dislodge LeberMac who was stubbornly stuck to his wake; Dragon of Fire followed closely behind. Aureus' choice of vessel was beginning to show itself as a bad choice by now, and John Rambler was nowhere to be seen.

MonkofAkan regained his lead, jumping into Sol II four seconds ahead of fooz2916, both of them leaving a disgruntled Dr. Lecter behind. Lecter entered Sol II shortly after followed closely by Harpo; back in Dantia, Krashis Merala and LeberMac were still fighting for the fifth spot, while Dragon of Fire seemed to be biding his time.

MonkofAkan hung on his slight seconds-wide lead over fooz2916 when crossing to Betheshee, with Dr. Lecter and Harpo baying at their heels. LeberMac finally overtook Krashis Merala in Sol II and began to pull close to the leaders; likewise, Dragon of Fire began to put pressure on Krashis. Aureus meanwhile was still back in Dantia, and John Rambler broke radio silence just to announce he was "way behind" but gave no hard data as to his actual location.

Now MonkofAkan began to extend the lead he'd enjoy for the rest of the race, jumping to Geira Rutilus a full kilometer ahead of fooz2916. Dr. Lecter actually managed to jump into Geira Rutilus mere seconds before fooz2916, taking second place, and when Harpo somehow managed to hit an asteroid in Betheshee, LeberMac caught up to him. The groups had shifted composition now, and the tailing racers were led by Krashis Merala, who was followed closely by Dragon of Fire and Aureus in Sol II, while John Rambler was still crossing Dantia, remembering for once to call in.

MonkofAkan entered Deneb without any close competitors, finally escaping Dominion space and the Strike Forces sortied to take him down; the opposite was just becoming true for Dr. Lecter, who was too busy in his duel for second place with fooz2916 to really bother with paying attention to the Itani sent to put him down. Not far behind, Harpo and LeberMac still dueled for fourth place in Geira Rutilus while Dragon of Fire and Krashis Merala fought over sixth in Betheshee, Aureus close behind. John Rambler had forgotten again to radio in his location.

As MonkofAkan widened his lead even more in Eo, the three one-on-one duels behind him (fooz2916-Dr. Lecter, Harpo-LeberMac, Krashis Merala-Dragon of Fire) still had no clear winner. Aureus was looking to catching up to Krashis and Dragon, but couldn't quite manage it.

As the race entered Cantus, Dr. Lecter finally managed to secure a five-second lead over fooz2916 and began to aim for MonkofAkan's first place; LeberMac, too, had beat his opponent and now raced through Eo with a 10-second advantage over Harpo. Everyone else managed to hang on to the place they had.

By the time MonkofAkan entered Setalli Shinas with an impressive 59-second lead, there were no longer any duels going on. After MonkofAkan came Dr. Lecter, then fooz2916, LeberMac, Harpo, Dragon of Fire, Krashis Merala, Aureus and lastly the invisible John Rambler; however, both LeberMac and Harpo overtook fooz2916 as the trio entered Setalli Shinas. In an interesting twist of Fate, Harpo was to lose his gains while still in Setalli Shinas when he risked too much and hit two ion storms in a row, giving fooz2916 more than enough time to pull ahead of him; this also allowed both Krashis Merala and Dragon of Fire to pull closer to him.

It was then that it happened: somewhere within Setalli Shinas, Krashis Merala lost control of his Vulture and careened into an asteroid at full speed; the Deneb Race had claimed its only victim, and Dragon of Fire was now free to concentrate on catching up to Harpo.

The race reached Divinia with MonkofAkan thinking on how to spend his money, LeberMac doing his best to catch up to Dr. Lecter (who was having none of it), fooz2916 trying to get back inside the winners' circle, and Harpo scrambling to catch up to Dragon of Fire, who had managed to overtake him at the wormhole. Aureus, meanwhile, was developing a canny habit for hitting every single ion storm in each system he entered; as for John Rambler, the silence said it all.

LeberMac finally managed to overtake Dr. Lecter as they raced for Jallik, closing the distance to MonkofAkan at the same time; fooz2916 was trying hard to overtake Dr. Lecter, too, but was having a much harder time at it. Behind all this, Dragon of Fire was securing a strong lead over Harpo, while Aureus kept trodding valiantly on, hitting ion storm after ion storm.

With MonkofAkan in the lead fast approaching Odia, LeberMac in second, Dr. Lecter squabbling for third with fooz2916, and behind them Dragon of Fire, Harpo, Aureus and John Rambler, the race was now virtually over. There was a second mine field planted by Caytyves Guild in Bractus, but again it failed to do anything of consquence. MonkofAkan did a leisurely entry into Corvus Hold, not a pirate in sight (some say the presence of Martin, who was there to shoot pirates, was partly the cause), and claimed first place and the 2 million credit grand prize.

But as this was happening, fooz2916 had managed to overtake Dr. Lecter and pull even to LeberMac; second and third were suddenly up for grabs. Everyone waited with baited breath as both racers jumped for Odia M-14... and only LeberMac arrived. Fooz2916 had hit an ion storm, an ion storm that was to cost him everything, for as he finally reached Odia M-14 he found to his dismay Dr. Lecter had also just arrived. It was a race for the docks of Corvus Hold... and Lecter beat fooz2916 by the smallest of margins, claiming third place.

With the circle of winners settled, it was a matter of waiting for the remaining racers to arrive if they could manage it. Dragon of Fire and Harpo, seemingly content to keep their places now that they were not eligible for a prize, arrived and docked at Corvus Hold with no fuss. Aureus arrived at the Hold after a long time of hitting storms, and then nearly forgot to dock to claim his place; he finally did after much prodding from his fellow racers.

Everyone thought the race was over, everyone cheered, the winners received their prizes and people, both racers and espectators, began to leave. It was then that at 18:52:57, fully 45 minutes after the race started, that John Rambler broke radio silence again, to announce he was docking at Corvus Hold. A brief conference was held since he had failed to constantly report his position, which is grounds for disqualification, but seeing as it affected the outcome in very little, and that finishing the Run is an accomplishment in itself, he was registered as having finished.

A good race, with interesting and sometimes amusing ocurrences.

The Stats
---------

MonkofAkan | 30:37 | Orion Hornet, no weapons, FC Battery
LeberMac | 31:52 | Orion Hornet, Quad Gemini Launchers, FC Battery, known as the "Monkinator"
Dr. Lecter | 33:03| Warthog Mk2, Megapositron Gun, FC Batt
fooz2916 | 33:04 | Orion Hornet, Single Gemini Launcher, FC Battery
Dragon of Fire | 34:16 | Orion Hornet, no weps, FC Battery
Harpo | 35:50 | Centurion MkII, no weapons, FC Battery
Aureus | 41:16 | Vulture MkI, Twin Iceflare Launchers, FC Battery
John Rambler | 45:45 | Marauder, no weapons, FC Battery
Krashis Merala | DNF | Vulture MkIII, Twin Orion XGX Phase Blasters, FC Battery

Interesting observations:

1) This was the race with the most number of participants in quite some time.

2) Pirate activity was virtually non-existant, with the worst attempts being minefields around a couple of wormholes.

3) The only racer to die, Krashis, was killed in an asteroid crash, the pirates got no kills this time around.

4) LeberMac brand Pocky contains carcinogenic compounds.

You say that someone died, yet there are no DNFs on the board...
Dec 04, 2005 Dark Knight link
Well, no results, but there ARE stats, including times. Usually that's where the DNF would go.
Dec 04, 2005 DragonEmpire link
Krashis Merala is the one who DNF for some reason he wasn't included in the results.

A slight error, sheesh. It should be fixed soon.

Ooops, knew I forgot someone. I'll add him when I do the write up.

[EDIT] Okay, ze write-up is ze up. Do bother me about it if I made any mistakes, so I can feex them.

Good write-up.

Keep this up and I'll turn into Leber: Never have to trade again. =D

P.S. - Good writeup

Heh. Krashis forgot to mention me half-heartedly emptying my Gemini's tubes at hin as we hit Sol II. All volleys completely missed, however, remaining true to my Ship's namesake, "The Monkinator".

I had saved two shots for Lecter, but was able to pass him easily in the Divinia --> Jallik area, so no joy. I think he got lost in Divinia somehow.

As I left Bractus, fooz was maybe 2000 m behind me, having caught up since I cautiously plotted around in Pelatus.

fooz lost 3rd place because he hesitated, waiting on my call to report position in Odia M-14. Joyce reported me entering the sector, but fooz must have been concentrating on Group chat instead of channel 100. He warped to Odia N-14 instead, and Lecter beat him by the slightest of margins. T'was sad.

How many times when Monk and I race do we finish 1-2? I think all the time.
Dec 05, 2005 Dark Knight link
Hehe, Leber, I assume our little wager still applies? I should be able to make this week's run.
Dec 05, 2005 fooz2916 link
Actually Leber, I jumped as soon as I reached 3K, but Joyce had not yet reported you reaching M-14. So I assumed that you had hit a storm and decided to take the safer route with no roids since I knew that I was a fair amount ahead of Lecter. But apparently N-14 had a bit of the ring of the planet in M-14 and was eligible for an ion storm. And naturally it had to have ill weather as I round the corner.

It was also my second time plotting into a storm, the other caused me to fall behind around Cantus.

I don't blame you anymore Leber. I place all blame on Krashis, who if hadn't crashed into a roid, I would never have been in the group awaiting Leber's report to M-14.

Handling this race is tough, and with more people than able to fit in a group is tougher. We're definitely going to need a second handler next time we exceed seven racers.
Dec 06, 2005 moldyman link
Leber, explain this "Monkinator" ship. I have yet to die in a race, so I assume it's called that for another reason.
Dec 06, 2005 LeberMac link
It's your usual loadout for combat, Monk. An Orion Convoy Guardian with 4 Gemini launchers.

Hence, "The Monkinator"

It's slow, by the way. Next time no weapons on my ship, as usual.

Thanks very much to Monk and Joyce for running the races while I was away. Good writeups too!
Dec 06, 2005 moldyman link
Umm, Leber, I never use Gems, in races or out. In fact, if I'm not racing in a Valk Veng, I have no weps at all.

And they're Sunflares Leber, SUNFLARES
