Walking into the Commander's office, I was a bit concerned... I've been on several missions lately that have taken me far outside the normal boundaries of [VPR] influence.

These missions have paid great dividends in intelligence... yet, I am well aware my mates have had to bear the brunt of the day-to-day work.

I sharply marched to his desk without hesitation... stopped... and snapped to attention. "Sir", I said.

"yes, what is it Seta?...", Commander Duncan replied... "and, at ease..."

I assumed a somewhat less-than-relaxed parade rest... and replied "Sir, as you know, I have been doing some really intensive duty of late... we have garnered some very valuable in-tel, and..."

"Seta... relax... I am well aware of the situation... just what are you trying to say?", Cmdr Duncan spoke with a low, sure tone.

"Well, sir... we do have the new recruits that need some shadowing, and Eaon is starting to become restless at his post...", I replied... "so, I understand that there is little time for personal requests..."

"Go on...", Cmdr Duncan replied softly...

"well, sir... I need some personal time. That is it, sir...", I replied.

"whatever you need", the commander replied... "we can handle things while you are gone... you just have to enter your off-time into the schedule... you know that"...

"Yes Sir", I replied...

"you're concerned about the upcoming mission, aren't you?", MD questioned...

"Yes Sir... and, well...", I replied

"Seta, I don't think I have *ever* seen you so uneasy... well, not since you were a recruit yourself all those years ago...", the Commander replied...

"No Sir... Sorry Sir...", I replied...

"Sit...", MD spoke in the low forceful tone that I have become acustomed to...

"understood...", Cmdr Duncan replied...

"Let me know if you need anything, Seta...", he said.

"Yes sir, I will... you know that. And Sir?", I replied - in my usual questioning tone...

Commander Duncan leaned back into his chair... a 1000 year-old relic, hand crafted and upholstered in natural leathers... as if to brace himself for another blow... and he then smiled.

"Yes, Seta?"

"Thanks.", I smiled.

Ooh... I think I better stay at my desk today, and catch up on my paperwork. Flying with a hangover would not be a good idea... on second thought... flying after those Rammers last night was definitely not a good idea.

I remember the wedding ceremony well... but then it goes fuzzy. And those dreams... I vaguely remember mine chain-laying tube worms... station worms... trying to arrest an innocent after he shot my Lt with a mining beam... and, did I *really* see two of me?

Note to self: download and parse the flight logs from my boat... that'll help clear things up.

"Clearance Delivery, Viper six, seven, seven, two, November..."

"Viper seventy-two November, Clearance Delivery..."

"Clearance, Viper seventy-two November... Hangar four-Alpha, Bay eight... request taxi to Docking B-niner, departure Jayhawk four... we'll be non-controlled today, sector Bravo-eight Sedina, Sector Hotel-two Latos, Sector Mike-eleven Azek, Sector Echo-five Azek, Sector Juliet-one Azek, Sector India-fifteen Dau... and we've got information Romeo..."

"Viper seventy-two November, roger... standby..."

"Frak", I think to myself... "you'd think the controllers were still using deep blue or something... what's the hold up..."

"Viper seventy-two November, cleared as filed... squawk three-three-five-eight, zero-one-one-zero, if not off by zero-one-two-zero notify departure niner-two-three-point-three... good hunting sir..."

"Roger dev, cleared as filed, three-three-five-eight... thanks..."

I signal the chocks pulled, and taxi to the launching bay... there seems to be an unusual amount of activity... but I stay focused on the mission at hand... I relax my grip, and smile... I love this part...

The launch from the bay was smooth, as usual... and I turboed towards the first coordinate on the departure plate, overlayed on the nav map.

"I guess I better get this over with...", I thought to myself as I keyed the mike...

"Departure, seventy-two November... request."

"Seventy-two November, departure... say request."

"Seventy-two November would like to rev my flight plan, we're going uncontrolled following the departure gate. I'd like to terminate radar at that time. uh...", I hesitated. "Victor papa romeo."

"Understand victor papa romeo, cleared as requested. Have a good day Seta."

"Seventy-two November, thanks... you too.", I replied. While I know the controller, I still find it a bit uneasy to relax standard protocol... but I've been flying around here so long that they seem to enjoy pushing me to relax a bit. And they truly are good folks... helped get me docked during countless emergencies... and I knew that tagging the trans with "VPR" would simplify things.

With that done, and just passing the last coordinate in the departure gate... I reach over to my transponder, turn it off, and then relax a bit.

"Might as well get comfortable... this is going to take a while."
