roleplaying doesnt work in VO, some reasons

Nov 07, 2006 who? me? link
i am going to preface this with saying that i am not very articulate, or knowledgible, so this list will be both bad and incomplete, but hopefully it can start some kind of discussion about how we can get everyone to RP more, and have more fun with it, and leave it ingame where it is supposed to be.

1. Everyone looks the same- same ships. There is really no way to distinguish one's self from the rest of the players when you're all lined up in a row.

2. People rarely RP all the time- That is to say, there isnt enough to RP about to keep in character all the time, forcing people to fall out of character in order to preserve the fun of chatting.

3. There are not enough varied activities in the game to support enough varied RP personas- self explainatory, we either need to come up with new things to do as players, or wait for the devs to give us more to do.

4. People's attitudes- Everyone (and by that i mean lots of people, but not everyone) is in some sort of competiton of who is smart, or who can think, or something along those lines. The people in this competition ruin roleplaying for everyone else by making it their singular goal in vendetta to uncover every character that is played by a single person, and sometimes making the facts known to the masses. While we know you are smart for doing this, you just ruined someone's RP. good job.

5. I'm sure there are more, and those could be listed, but what i was hoping this thread would be is a discussion about how to improve the environment so that people who want to tell us a story can do that without being hassled to the point where they get frustrated and stop telling their story.

Alamar had many great ideas on this he posted about before leaving.

My ship is usually the one with a golden Halo, with the holy light of The Lady Serco shining proudly on it.

Now then, totalitarian propaganda aside...

I think you're right. Would be useless just posting that though... personally, I think one reason why some endeavor so much to discover the player behind all our characters is guild security (and some are just paranoid freelancers). If you know who someone else's alts are, please don't hold anything against them (example: lets say I had a character in SCAR, and another in ITAN. these guilds RP-wise are mortal enemies, but I shouldn't be assumed as disloyal merely because I wish to play on both sides of the proverbial fence). To any of these folk that hunt alts for a living: how disloyal or committed someone is has nothing to do with what alts they have; rather, it has to do with who they are as a person. PLEASE don't go spreading this info around (apart from heads-up to any guilds recruiting this person, because that's common security and can be talked out OOC with the players in question).

On that note, Lexicon, you're misguided. I'll be expecting a nice thank-you when I manage to free you of that brainwashing and make you... normal again. Normal meaning not a scary augmented baby-eating priest. It scares me. Honestly, I might exhibit facial expressions.

I've had/have alts in SCAR and ITAN at the same time, it never effected things much.

Edit: Course I was never found out unless I wanted to be, which brings up my next point if you don't wanna be caught then don't be dumb. I've never been caught when I didn't want to be. And here's a good tip, over the top Russian accents help.

Main (if not only) reason: too small playerbase.

Roleplaying still works in some ways, but on an ad hoc basis like softy2 does from time to time.

Or if you stick to one real character. Then there's no way to reveal "links" or what not.

I can't remember who, but someone made a post a while ago about why VO is *perfect* for RPing because there is virtually no distinction between "player" and "character" in the game universe.

In other words provided you keep conversation limited to the game universe, simply by playing the game you are "roleplaying" a character... YOU.

It all depends on your perspective, I guess.

Eh, "Roleplaying yourself" is an oxymoron.

And I agree with Sun Tzu.
