Curious about Etiquette/Behaviour.

I have been told I break to many rules of standard etiquette and the like. I am curious how that can be the case when I cop the same behaviour and treatment from others and when i mention in 100 about it im told I am a newb and so on and so forth.

I understand that there is etiquette and behaviour established by the players before me and I understand and respect that. To be talked to abusively in 100 by certain players who shall remain un-named since others i talked to thought the person involved was joking about this is very discouraging.

I am basicly writing this thread and wondering IF the older players feel slighted by newer players such as myself behaving in a certain way, why there isnt an ettiquette guide that would help explain things like Latos H-2 combat and initation of fights to name a few.

I am unsure if this should be in RP forum or here or suggestions so I placed it here and suspect it may be moved.

EDIT: I have been told by one person that i spam 100 too much and
am trying to limit how much i send. I would prefer if people talked to me about things instead of it escalating that way I can learn without causing problems later for the people involved.

I am by no means an expert on this, but I'll list what I have observed to be the most commonly-followed "rules" of etiquette in VO:

1) Don't be abusive to other players over comms.
» As a general rule of thumb, if you wouldn't say it to your parents or a friend, it might be abusive, or at least not a wise idea to say it.
2) Don't spam the chat.
» Most people have different definitions of what is "spam" and what is not. In general, sending large numbers of small messages one after the other (in relatively quick succession) without other people saying something in between is considered "spamming" the chat because your messages fill up the current page of chat, forcing people to scroll up to see what someone else said. If you blob smaller statements into longer sentences, you can avoid this a little (your rate of sending messages will go down, too).
3) As far as combat goes, everyone has a different opinion on how combat "should" work. Some tips:
» Hailing your intended target is not required, but it is a common courtesy, and goes a long way to help your reputation as a player. (Attacking without a hail can attract a large amount of flak from some pilots.)
» In general, interrupting a duel is considered bad form.
» Using swarm missiles may make you a priority target for everyone in the sector because of the potential for framerate hits on older computers.
» Note: in warzones like Deneb B-12 and C-10, these guidelines tend to not be in effect as much. Also, in Latos H-2, expect that duels may be interrupted.

Also using caps seems to piss off a lot of people (although I don't really know why, as long as it's not EVERY SINGLE EFFING LINE I don't really see it being a problem).

In combat, I would say the most widely accepted rule of etiquette is: Don't run from something you start. About 99% of fighters (and 100% of good ones) adhere to that rule, even in warzones.

The second most commonly bitched about violation is the use of swarm missiles. People don't really like them because:
- They're annoyingly hurtful if you don't keep an eye on them
- If you're in anything heavier than a warthog (even a warthog is pushing it) you're kind of in trouble if the missiles are fired off anywhere near you
- They don't require any skill to use, so one's honor is often damaged if in fact they are destroyed by swarms
- Now they slap around frame-rates for a lot of people.

Although some folk try to draw arbitrary distinctions with swarms (IE, one missile launcher is okay but two is bad), most of us view them in a PvP situation as lame. Plus they don't teach you anything to help you get better. You're really much better off with a vulture and neutron blasters. And again, swarms are not a good idea even in "warzones"

(Note: Swarms are perfectly acceptable for use against bots, ie queens and levs and capships, and are just fine to use on a trade vessel to deter pirates. However, I would suggest that if you have a ship with swarms for the purpose of destroying bots and an enemy player starts coming towards you, you issue a warning such as "I have swarms for bots and I don't want to use them on you, so please back off" just to make sure that if there is a fight you don't get called a spamming wuss or whatever)

Most of the common etiquette was listed above, but for more information check here: http://www.vo-wiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Player_VS._Player

There's a section for PvP etiquette. I strongly encourage all new players to read or at least browse all sections of the wiki. There's a lot of good info there and it's maintained by fellow players.

As for fighting in Latos H2 or anywhere in greyspace for that matter, there are no rules. Yes, there's common courtesies but don't expect those to always be offered. Anyone who is chastising you for using uncouth tactics in greyspace has no grounds to complain. I apologize for whoever it was that did so. Someone is giving you the impression that there is an adhered to code of combat, and there isn't. There is no uniform code of combat. People who speak to you in an abusive manner are most likely just upset, but again, in greyspace they have no grounds to complain.

Note that you can do many things that will portray yourself in a less than positive manner to the rest of the community, but in the traditional sense there is no right and wrong. Fly how you like, just be ready to reap what you sow.

I can tell you that older players won't feel slighted if you fly a certain way. Fly the way that gives you the most enjoyment. Just keep in mind that you'll only get respect by giving it to other players.

I don't know who believes that Latos H2 has some specific combat rules, but it doesn't. I'm sure you were within your rights on whatever you did, short of griefing.

Thanks guys. I was just extremely confused by behaviour of a couple people and I regretably spammed 100 due to it and being unsure what I could do or say on forums about it. Thanks for all the help.

Just reading that first post makes me want to tell this guy off.

My advice, therefore, is to work diligently at sounding less like a douche bag. HTH

I used to sit in H-2 as a pirate killing traders while ye were all doin yer pvp stuff in B-8.

Maybe my next next mission after this CtC crap is over, will be to remove all duelists from H-2 cos yer stepping on my toes.

And with that I beg this threade be moved to role playing.

I think that this is only marginally role-playing material, but I love it when you beg. So:

Didn't yoda invite all plonkers to fight in H-2 in the beginning anyway?

Your a newb. Some people think that their may still be hope for you, where as they have long given up on many of the older players. if you see an older player doing it, that would be what you shouldn't do. also, as older players, we can back it up with neutrons. your a newb, shut up.

No, that was Bractus B-14, and Genka, we all love you already, no need to try for the attention nomore.

I have given genka and yoda a melon each.

It was someone else in CLM that was pressuring people to move out of B-8 and into H-2. Splash, I think.
Jun 10, 2007 LeberMac link
Actually, Yoda was attempting to move the PvP more towards Odia, as I recall. That would be nice. But, if he's grumbling about PvP moving to Latos H-2, then I think that's a good sign that we're annoying the little green dude! So... keep it up!

Ok what pray tell gives you the right Dr. Lecter to tell someone off who is TRYING to learn about the preffered and accepted forms of behaviour?

I have had enough and this goes for people who i WILL name now such as Jestatis Bess Fault and it would appear you as well thinking that the way you guys play and view tactics are the only way things should be done.

I have done my whinging, and i brought it here for constructive criticism and comment to be put down for asking about the general view of the player base.

I have had enough of people complaining that I do this and that wrong and all I can say is to people such as you Lecter and bess, if your in greyspace dont you DARE demand i do a certain thing from now on and if you DONT LIKE IT i dont care.

The last statement goes for the following
H-2 Combat
Use of certain weapons *except the locust and chaos swarms which im banned to use by guild and i will follow that even if its all i have to shoot*
Attacking without hailing *this one is directed at jestatis bess*

EDIT: if that makes me sound like a douche bag in your eyes so be it. And Roda shut up man I am trying to play by the accepted rules of engagment and so on and you think bess would have the guys to use something OTHER then swarms and that me being a newb gives him the right to bulldust like he did?

EDIT2: Genka you dont like what i have to say or how i say it just ignore me and dont post abuse like that in a thread thinking ill stop cause i ignore it.

Anubis, it is a part of common Etiquette/Behaviour to ignore any BS coming from Lecter, Genka and other commonly known trolls

and then JUST SHUT UP ALREADY.
