Midweek Nation War #110

May 20, 2009 Gerty link
Nation War is on for today, if anyone was wondering. Plan is to start at regular time, 20:00 GMT, though I'm considering doing Wednesdays an hour later. Let me know if this works better for you, I'll go on consensus. Also, if anyone plans to lead groups, it's always helpful to know as early as possible, randomness permitting.

Hope to see you there,

Gerty

Midweek Nation War #110 • May 20th, 2009

Well, I'm happy to say, we had a most uncivilized gathering in Latos this week. Our fearlessly representing attendees were:

Itani: Azumi, Bojan, Ghost, iry, Ishathis Bessuni, keeroo, Morgan West, Smittens, Solitary

Serco: Aelius Sejanus, Lars Marona, Mr. Chaos, Solra Bizna

UIT: Ariel Freeborn, Boran Mur, Breazle, Ecka Estenk, Makh Khasti, Mick, Ostan-Be Ralel, Shiro Oni (spectating), Gerty

Grey: Get your butts in here sometime, eh?

Good fights all around. The Itani took the match with strong coordination, grit and general know-how, complete with ignominious sack of UIT figurehead Gerty at the outset. Good to see you back in force. No, really. Special mention for Breazle... our hero.

Nation War is made possible by contributions by viewers like you: Aelius Sejanus, Ariel Freeborn, The Phoenix Alliance (various lovely beings) and VendettaHQ.com (more lovely beings). Thank you for your support, an be damned to ye!

Again, I apologize if I left anyone out. My nethods aren't quite in step with my mouth, but I'll put you in the appendices if that'll do. Hope to see y'all next time!

Good job Gerty. You died well:)

Does Breazle always try to run and jump out of NW sector when his side loses?
He was pretty upset at his failure to escape.

Faustie! How could I forget? Sorry chum, I had you marked down as Event Security, but forgot to put it in the post. Forgive me if you can.

Bojan, I can't attest to Breazle's intentions, but I assure you if he had left the sector intact, we'd now see him pilloried at Itani High Command, and sternly disqualified. I should point out though, that almost every NW ends with one survivor on the run from the soon-to-be victors, and I believe Breazle took someone out just before his demise, so we can't very well accuse him of fleeing. Forestalling his fate perhaps, but not fleeing.

Anyway, I did a fair amount of running myself, and I'm thinking a non-combatant host or designated referee might not be a bad idea after all. Also flirting with doing two Wednesday NWs, to accommodate more people in more timezones, and perhaps styling them as tournaments geared more towards newer players, in support of the main event on Sunday. Any thoughts on that, let's hear em.

Thanks Azumi, you know I relish my every death at your hands!

Oh, Gerty... he did not flee... I killed him mid-jump. :P

Well then, I pronounce this inquiry resolved. Citizen Breazle is adjudged innocent and released on his own recognizance. We'll see how he does with that!

Anyone who didn't see Incarnate's post following NW #171 might wanna take a look-

I think the general feeling is that relying on custom game mechanics and/or oversight by the guides/devs to protect player events would dilute the game overall, but some built-in support for organizing them will be most welcome. For the longer term, let's start a wishlist about features that would make complex events more doable – i.e. rather than invoke turrets to enforce event security (and quite possibly get everyone killed) we could ask for some way to establish victory conditions that would be hard to verify otherwise. Scriptable objectives, etc, etc.

Example: Event organizers place a few items that are set to persist until the event is ended, and designate a sector as crucial to the event. The team that can maintain possession of the majority of those items and either control the crucial sector or eliminate all opposition within some time limit wins the event. Variations abound, and I know it's not new thinking either, but I think a system like that would make it so players at any hour, with any inclinations, could improve the game for everyone.

Inc, if you're reading this, I know that's easier said than done, especially with networked games. Not to put more on you guys:)
