Couple questions

Nov 15, 2009 Blitz_Stryfe link
I just got VO recently and I am enjoying it immensely. I have played a host of other MMORPG's ranging from runescape to WoW and many others. I really like VO so far though. The game is fun and the community is cool.

In my experience a good guild helps make a game much more enjoyable/fun. I am, as I said new to the game, but I learn fast. Is there any guilds that are good for a new player such as myself?

Some information I have not been able to find though includes:

How does one become a pirate (assuming I wanted to)

and

Can members of different factions be in the same guild? I am confused because I see people with different alignments in a guild together, which confuses me a little.

Anyways, thanks for the welcomes I got in game, made me feel good. Peace.

Hi, welcome to SpaceQuake.

Contrary to what the article on vo-wiki states, pirating is very easy in VO. All you need is a vaguely combat-ready ship (anything other than a Behemoth) the ability to tell bots from players and a certain comfort level with regard to begging.

Once you've collected that large list of prerequisites, find yourself a reasonably well-travelled sector in gray space (Latos and Sedina are popular, but I think Odia's unfairly overlooked a lot of the time) and park your butt in it. Now, the waiting game begins. This will really test your patience, as it may be as long as a few minutes before you see a living soul. You may want to spend the time by saying things like "Should've paid!" every few minutes, to drum up your reputation of a fearsome pirate.

Eventually, however, a player will enter your sector, and the real pirating can begin! As soon as they're in the sector, intimidate the player that's warped in by flying rather close and then quickly send a hail along the lines of "Come to a complete stop and send moneys now or be destroyed!"
And with that, you should be done! The majority of VO's newer players have heard so much about the horrors of grey space, they'll be lucky if their pants stay clean before they pay out however much money you ask for.
On the off chance that the player doesn't pay, however, you'll probably want to make a half-hearted attempt at blowing their ship up, though you will want to watch out for thing like mines and clever dodging. After they get away, just pop over to the "Do not accept payment from these traders!" thread over here in the Role Playing forums and post away. This will only serve to cement your reputation as a fearsome pirate not to be messed with.

Now, if someone you demand money from decides to fire on you, the best thing to do is probably just run away. That way, they can't really say anything about your combat skills, since they haven't seen them, and your reputation as a skilled combatant is undamaged.

Good luck, and good hunting!

I'd suggest a few things in a different vein than what is in genka's rather colorful post.

First, learn to love dying and get good at player-vs-player. If you want to join one of the existing pirate guilds, you'll have to display at least two things (at least, speaking for CHRN here):

1) Some raw ability at the game and
2) The right attitude and the willingness to learn.

I'd say #2 is more important for newbs because it'll be hard to get better without it.

So, get good at PvP first before going out and trying to pirate. There is little love for pirates in this game and you could quickly find yourself the subject of much animosity that you weren't prepared for. Friends you thought were cool people will suddenly become assholes. You'll become the subject of various and well-nigh incessant rants on 100 and here. But if you can endure it, there's guilds for you!

There are currently two pirate guilds in the galaxy.

Kharon's Shores, or CHRN, is an elite group of combat pilots and pirates. They are definitively the most powerful guild in terms of PvP prowess, but they are usually pretty difficult to get in to.

The Cargo Liberation Movement, or CLM, used to be a moderately powerful pirates guild, but these days they are mostly filled with alts from other guilds (though there are still one or two real pirates left in CLM). However, CLM is very easy to get into, so if you're too lazy to work hard and get into CHRN, CLM is probably your best bet.

Wait wait wait, [CORN] is considered "elite?" Oh wait, ladron's IN [CORN]. Your "elite" brand claim needs a disclaimer, ladron.
