I live in a large auditorium so I can fit my working replica of Gustav in a way so that it points at my door...

Can we just move this to Off Topic?

I like to keep this handy for close encounters

also shank that is way to large to be considered tactical and besides how can you even aim it? There is no red dot sight.

Gustav II gets 'em the first time... no need for any secondary close encounter weapons :D

A laser/surefire LED foregrip is on my list of potential upgrades, Growlor. However, I've already had the front sight drilled out and fitted with a Trijicon gas tube, so I'm not really sure how much I need it.

or one could simply have the proper training on how to effectively use a firearm in close combat.... While in the military and in combat, the extra crap attached to a weapon often proved to be more of a hinderance then any real help. The last thing you want when breeching a door is for some addon to get entangled and cause you to get stuck in the "fatal funnel" and hold up the rest of your team. They also tend to alter the balance of a weapon ( even something as simple as a tac light attacked to the rails on an M4 can make it quite front heavy). You could always tell a fobbit by the number of upgrades he had slapped onto his weapon.

As noted above, I'm not going to be using this for door breaching, despite the breacher barrel. This thing's only job is to live on clips under my side of the bed (or in the boot of the Jag when I travel), and put large holes in any unwelcome nighttime guests that come to me.

Credited on the balance issue, however-which is why I like the Surefire grip for a lighting solution.

breeching was just an example, if its beside your bed, it'll be a bitch when the damn thing gets tangled in the sheets... , then again we're already diametrically opposed here, as a father I wont keep a gun in my home, not only for my childs protection, but also because most people who die (due to gun violence) in home invasions, tend to be shot with their own guns.

Which part of "live on clips" was unclear? It hangs neatly under the rail, and pulls cleanly out. As for sheets, good thing my rather modern-looking bed/matteress thing doesn't use them :D I've got a foam pad with a zip-off cover, and a single blanket-if I manage to get a short shotgun without any rail mounted accessories tangled up in that, I've got bigger problems than home invasion. Namely, having somehow suddenly forgotten months of professional instruction (I wasn't always a lawyer), years of weekly range practice and drills, and all the associated muscle memory that has come from them :P

But hey, if you want to base your home defense decisions off statistics involving people who bought their gun at Wal-mart and stuck it in their closet right away, you be my guest. With a kid, I'd guess you'd want to use a quick-access style pistol safe bolted to the nightstand. Thankfully, I'm still not encumbered by such critters, so I can leave my preferred weapons wherever I like them best.

In other news, I'm still trying to figure out WTF the sighting system on Pey's "rifle" is supposed to be. An eotech on top of a scope?

heh I base my home defense strategy on the fact that I dont live in a place associated with high gun violence. That and having been a close combat instructor for the Third Infantry Division (I wasnt always a Biochemist). I dont have anything against you having a gun in your home, frankly It doesnt effect me in the least. With children, the only truly "safe" way to store a firearm is to store the weapon and ammunition in separate, combination locked cabinets. As well as using a trigger lock on the weapon itself. This effectively makes it useless for home defense, so not really worth the effort.

This is not unlike the saying that the only truly "safe sex" is masturbation, in a sterile room, while wearing a condom and nitrile gloves. At some point, you have to trust that your chosen safety mechanism will not suffer a random mechanical failure. If you cannot rely on a single well-made and maintained safe to keep prying fingers off a loaded pistol, you may have a problem with paranoia.

Then again, like I said, I don't have kids, either of my own or visiting my home-I don't even want to think about what a terrifying responsibility they must be. They're a dangerous combination of fucking stupid and fiendishly clever.

ding ding ding yes it is an eotech on top of a scope it provides me with two quick options over either long range or short range for when I have to fight a combination of regular slow zombies and the ones from 28 days later.
Mar 16, 2010 Dr. Lecter link
Where's your night vison scope? Zombies love to attack in the dark!

lol No shit, thats why a parent cant trust a single "well manufactured" safe. Kids can get into shit that an adult is hopelessly inept at (take "child-proof" medication caps). Truly the only safe way to store a firearm with children around is not to keep it on the premsis, I have several colleges that enjoy recreational shooting, those with kids tend to rent space at their favorite range.

Back to the original topic...

The Biocom mine is described as a miniature Teller-Ulam device. That gives us some idea how its 10,000 units of damage might correspond to the real world: we actually have such devices.

So 10,000 in-game damage units is equal to a 500kt nuclear explosion - perhaps more, since people might have gotten better at making nukes in 2000 years. That means a single shot from a neutron blaster is more destructive to a ship in VO than the bomb that destroyed Hiroshima exploding against its hull. VO ships have strong armor indeed; conventional weapons from 2010 would be useless against them.

Barring similar advances in personal body armor, firearms would be perfectly fine for killing people in the VO universe.

Well, there's always the off-chance that a cyborg (Serco or otherwise) winds up modded with a dermal layer of XiRite armor and decides to make trouble. Not nearly as effective as actual starship-grade plating, but I'd bet it'd stop most small arms cold.
