Basic Rules
Only those who are on-time are allowed to participate.
Participants must be on their nation's team unless they can make a claim to be unaligned in which case they may choose to fight for Grey.
You may not start fighting until the host signals the start of the battle - this includes the 15 minute period prior to the planned starting time.
You may not return to the battle sector after you have left except to observe from a healthy distance in an EC-88 or EC-89.
No running from the asteroid field.
The last team standing wins.

Wait... Tridents are actually getting play and they're useful? what?
How often is this happening or is it just NW?

They're useful as mobile reload and repair facilities, which has always been the case. The difference is only that there are now several tridents scattered about the verse, so people are a lot more likely to see one being used. And being owned by different people, perhaps they are being used for a wider variety of tasks than CD used hers for.
I can't say how useful they are at other things, e.g. transport, as I haven't really worked with them beyond gunning at one event and using this one for RR.
My dream is still to have a Teradon with AI turrets. :)

Well, the interesting thing is that it was used in NW indicating a frightening level of "team play". What's next? People bringing Rags for bomb-runs on the enemy tridents and appropriate counter maneuvers from fighters? Entirely player driven cap-ship included combat? It's like VO is getting interesting again.
That's why I'm wondering how often this is happening. If its more often than every NW (which I likely couldn't attend), then that's interesting.

I think I've been in three or four nation wars ever that had tridents. I think that is perfectly okay, because tridents in a nation war make things different. Personally I'd rather see an additional periodic event (at a lower frequency) for capship battles, or else scheduled once-a-month nation wars with tridents allowed, or something like that. So that people can know what to expect, and arrange to bring their own trident as well, etc.
I haven't seen a nation war with more than one trident yet. I have been in a trident vs. trident battle, which was interesting. We just used the tridents and gunners for that one, with no fighters involved.
I don't know how often other fights with tridents are happening, as I haven't been in game much over the last couple months (just part of my normal oscillation). It certainly sounds like it happens a lot more than it used to, but that's all I know. I don't think it's enough to get too excited over yet, but it is definitely a good turn of events. Within six months maybe there will be enough of them floating around to see multiple un-arranged fights a week. (Maybe there already are and I'm just out of the loop.)

So far there has been two Trident v Trident (with a swarm of fighters) battles that I have personally been involved in.
I'm not willing to comment further on any of this, I have a lot to say on the matter, but I will keep my opinions to myself because mummy said if you can't say something nice, don't say something at all. (she never said don't type anything though, I always found that suspicious)
EDIT: Oh I WILL say that they definitely need shields. If you are one of those opinionated people that hasn't actually flown a trident and decides they don't need shields, please do not bother posting. They need shields because it will encourage use in these kinds of situations, It doesn't make sense that a capital vessel can just be ground down by a tiny HX they should need a coordinated attack in order to destroy.

They make intense fur balls more fun and dieing matter just a pinch more because that minute you are gone is a minute the enemy can weaken your trident and gain control over the sector
This will be a good year for combat pilots
