A Treatise on Space Elephants
Origin
Little is known about the actual origin of the space elephant. One thing is for certain, they are not related to the Elephants of earth though they are similar in many ways. Space elephants today come from space elephant farms located thought most of the explored universe. The name “Space Elephant” comes from the striking similarity of between the Elephants of earth and the new species. Because of the unknown origin of the space elephant it is hard to determine rather any faction, corporation, or government body discovered the things. Serco scientists clam they are the result of genetic manipulation, same as their other labor creatures. Itani claim they are a pure new species discovered during their long voyage when fleeing Serco forces. UIT scientists generally don't care but a few have claimed that they hold the patents and should therefore get royalties. In truth, space elephants may have been discovered as far back as the original wormhole from earth or even further. It is likely we will never know the true Origin of the space elephant.
Likeness to the Terra based Elephants
Space Elephants are called so because of their likeness to the original Earth elephants. They warm blooded, vertebrate mammals. The females produce milk for their young and they eat mostly plant materials in the wild. That however is about where the similarities stop.

As this image shows Space elephants are much smaller then their land based namesakes, but due to their internal structure they maintain and incredibly dense amount of mass. The average space elephant weights is about 1,000 Kilograms for a creature usually less then a meter from trunk to tail.
Intelligence in Space Elephants
Space elephants are not very bright for the most part, but they can be trained, with some care, to do simple tasks. Their matter density makes them extremely sensitive to inertial stresses. Some rare space elephants have been known to sing, but this is mostly just mimicry of the songs they hear from radios and such.

Space Elephants in Modern Space Flight
The single most important use for space elephants in modern space flight is to provide counter thrust during deceleration after firing turbo thrusters. When a pilot stops “turboing” there is immediate deceleration. Due to the mass density of the space elephant deceleration occurs faster then the actual acceleration. Normal thrusters are used for normal flight and space elephants are used for rapid deceleration after turbo usage.
The importance of rapid deceleration can not be over stated. As we all know turning while turboing has been locked out of every single modern space craft due to the inertial stresses placed on the ship while turning and rapidly accelerating. Space elephants allow for more nimble maneuvers by rapidly decelerating the ship allowing for turning.
In the past, thrusters were used for rapid deceleration, but because tight maneuvers needed pilots to slow down faster then their turbo speeds them up, the retro-thrusters ended up being more powerful then the turbo thruster. Many pilots were fine with this accommodation but, as society has repeatedly taught us, “You can't fix stupid.” and eventually everyone just started flying backwards in order to accelerate faster. This of course caused many accidents and malfunctions as ship building materials could not stand the stress. Once discovered space elephants were introduced and the problem of stronger retro thrusters was solved.
Commercial applications and considerations
Today nearly every single ship manufacturer grows their space elephants in house. A few smaller manufacturers out source, but they are rare. No ship in existence today functions without the right number of space elephants.
Space elephants are not expensive to produce but they are an expense and many manufactures install inadequately trained space elephants. Others simply short change them on the feed, fail to measure their weight correctly. This leads to a suspiring number of hardware failures during flight operations. Still this is less then the failures caused by pilots flying backwards to go faster, but it is still a problem.
Common Problems with space elephants in modern ships
Most of the problems with space elephants these days come from ship builders and sellers cutting corners in order to reduce costs. The most common problems include:
* poorly trained space elephants becoming easily distracted or not providing proper counter thrust
* Singing space elephants distracting the ships pilot
* Improperly sexed space elephants getting busy during combat
* Poorly fed space elephants having digestive issues during flight
The Fix for Space elephant issues
Family Galactic Travel warranties cover space elephant related issues by holding the seller of the ship and the manufacturer responsible for any damages cause by said space elephants. Thanks to famy's tireless diligence in this area space elephant issues are nearly 100% eradicated on warranted vessels. Sellers and Manufacturers continue to use “discount” space elephants in the manufacture of ships, but they are only sold to pilots that do not poses a FAMY warranty product. No other company has come forward to tackle the space elephant issue at this time.
Recommended Safety Procedures for domesticated space elephants
* Always carry a FAMY warranty. This will ensure you always get the highest quality space elephant when buying new ships.
* Never feed your space elephant anything other then registered space elephant food. You do not want to be in a confined space with a space elephant after it's had a bean burrito.
* To reduce the chance of your space elephants singing and distracting you try not to play repetitive music.
* Always keep your space elephants sexually happy. Horny space elephants do not work well in counter thrust maneuvers.
* Never fiddle with your space elephants “special place” they don't like it. Sexual happiness can be ensured at every station in space, handle that situation there, not in the back of your Valk.

This is not a General Topic. Someone move this to the RP forum.

I just realized coteyr is ryetoc spelled backwards.
Also, before everyone flames him for animal abuse in that picture, it's just a newborn elephent probably at a zoo or something.

Newborn elephants are still huge. That's a premature elephant fetus.
(This post is awesome. :D)
No matter how small they make them, the damn things keep weighing down my ship!

That space elephant is full grown, and is pretty large for use in behemoths and the like.

.... What's wrong with "shoulda paid" !?!?!?!
Have you ever tried to fly with sexing space elephants? I was moving FCP in my XC when they got busy... I nearly nailed a station guard!

My inner physicist is cringing.
I'll leave this here for a while longer, then move it to RP.
(b.t.w. I always thought the unexplained drag was because of the invisible turtle on whose back rests the 30 known systems; darned thing cares most about the aetherial quintessence sometimes called "ghammepleigh". I'm told this is not actually correct... the real answer has to do with a strange quantum focusing effect. I'll let Alloh tell you about that.)

Phaser... yoy just moved up a few rungs.
Amazing. I'm going to mirror this on the FGT site. Space elephants must be properly represented. LOL
