Discovery Exploration Corps (DEC)
Edras Command, Edras G-11
(Tunguska Mining Outpost, Berrick-class)

To: Any Interested, Adventurous Pilots
Subj: Information About DEC

Body:
Have you a restless Spirit whose thirst for adventure cannot be slaked by simple Seeking of those elusive Hive Queens? A hunger for Thrills whose ravenous appetite cannot be satiated by the toughest Battle for that last crate of purified Xithricite?

Then the Discovery Exploration Corps is for you, my friend! Join us as we become the frontrunners in the Exploration of new deposits of ore and the Discovery of new, unheard-of solar systems!

Whether you are Itani, Serco, UIT or something completely Unrelated, we welcome you with open arms! The Itinerary for the next 6 months is currently under discussion, but the basic layout is this:

January-March 4433*: We will spend time searching for veins of rare Ores, charting them, and compiling them into a Database that will only be accessable to members of the Guild (initially, but after a while we would like to open it up to the general Public). This data will be used to further fund the DEC in its gathering of materials for the beginning of the massive Search for new systems** that will begin somewhere from April to May 4433.

April-May 4433: After our preparations, we will begin our explorations as a Guild, reporting our findings to the guild Database. We are expected to make a solid Attempt at making a profit on mining and trade in these new star systems, because Exploration will be made easier if we have a capital ship as a mobile base***.

If you would like to sign up, please, post your reply along with Character Name.

Miharu Sena Kanaka,
DEC Commander

PS: If RelayeR is in the crowd, I would much appreciate it if he would be lieutenant, as this is the kind of guild he enjoys.

*: The year 4433 in Vendetta-time corresponds to the year 2005 in our time.
**: The Exploration Add-on. (ETA about 6 months from launch)
***: The Capship Add-on. (ETA about 6 months from launch)

who are you? and why dont you know that relayer is a woman? why should i join your guild?
Dec 15, 2004 Celkan link
Ananzi, what you don't know is that you are *wrong*. RelayeR is a man. check his email.
Dec 15, 2004 roguelazer link
ananzi, you might want to step back. One of Celkan's characters is known as Verdandi.
Dec 15, 2004 RelayeR link
uh...I am???

The email is my husband's.
Dec 15, 2004 Celkan link
Rel: I was not so informed. Either way, the offer still stands, as I think it better suits your previous activities ingame than any of the other guilds.

Ananzi, if you want any kind of nice response, I'd start being nice in your queries instead of attacking right off the bat.

Getting back on topic here...

Sounds like a way cool guild, or will be once the exploration expansion gets added. In the meantime, I'm not too keen on mining, even with the extra interest of mapping it. Expect to hear from me in a few months.

Celkan if I am gonna join a guild I want to know if the leader has any leadership skills.
Dec 16, 2004 Celkan link
That is no reason to attack the person making the post. Ask things in a polite, conversational tone, as opposed to an accusational one, and you will get what you want.

"Who are you?"

RTFP and you will have figured that out.

"and why dont you know that relayer is a woman?"

Read a subsequent post and I explain.

"why should i join your guild?"

Because I'm offering something nobody else is? A chance to do some exploring with guildmates? Mining as a *guild*, not a group? The ability to be an authority on the existance of hidden cosmic phenomena when that feature is revealed? To do the community a service by compiling a database of ore locations? (which may or may not be revealed to the public until after the exploration addon)

"[...]if the leader has any leadership skills."

I have been (not necessarily in chronological order):

-Council Member of the Itani Nation Military (Alpha version of the IDF)
-Sub-Commander (Lieutenant) of the Vendetta Pilots Against Imperialism group, a multi-national force dedicated to preventing single players from taking over a sector
-Guild Master of the Aesir League, a guild that existed during the Alpha stages that at one time was the largest guild in existance
-Commander of the Itani Nation Diplomatic Corps, the INM's version of VPAI
-Representative to the Corps Diplomatique, a Multi-guild group of representatives who discussed problems between individual guilds.
-TGP Overseer; back when the modular stations were first introduced, a guild was named after the corporation, then named TGP (it had been misspelled). I was a general overseer of the pilots enforcing the "peace" around the station. ^^;
-I was a member of the Blue Nation Military for a short while, as a Representative and a fighter pilot.

Good enough?

Celkan,

I'd like to setup a time to sit down with you and discuss the DEC. As leader of the dWo, we have a similar mission objective that we have been persueing for some time now. I can be reached in game via the name Kripsin.

Hey, I'm fairly new to this game, and this idea of exploration sounds really cool. How/When is this going to happen? I would be very interested in joining a guild that focuses on such a dynamic aspect of this game. Can you give me some information about your guild/exploration?
Jun 08, 2005 Touriaus link
Heh well I dont think celkan needs any crap about his leadership skills seeing as how he is a vet and has alot of guild experience. It is a very good idea when the exploration gets added but for now its a small universe and would seem to be contained of a mining guild like IGPK.
Jun 10, 2005 Celkan link
Well, given how the guild would actually work, it would be very different from IGPK... in several respects. I am not sure that posting the charter as-is is a good idea, but I believe it will give people a good idea of how the guild will function.

Purpose of the Discovery Exploration Corps Guild (DEC)
» The DEC is an exploration- and mining-oriented guild. It is our long term goal to seek out and find new locations of resources, whether they be in known space or undiscovered territory.
» The DEC is a multi-nation guild. As long as you can agree to get along with the other members, we don’t care what nation you belong to, be it Itani, Serco or UIT.
» The DEC exists to help create a safe environment for exploration and mining in the universe.
» The DEC is not a pirate- or bounty-hunting guild.

Member Guidelines
I. Member Behaviour/Conduct
» As a member of the DEC, you are expected at all times to be respectful of:
» » Other Players
» » Guides
» » Developers
» » The DEC Commander, Council, and Lieutenant(s)
» You are not to attack any ship other than Unaligned drones or NPC’s.
» » If you are fired upon (hit or miss) by a player, you may fire back.
» If you are destroyed by a player before you can fire back, remember the rule DOKO. “Die once, kill once.”
II. Member Responsibilities
» Members are requested to keep track of what they mine and where they mine it for the guild Database.
» Members, if so requested, should be available to help new players with mining and travel to new areas.
» Members have the right to participate in DEC Council Meetings. Where meetings are being held and how often they will be held is being considered.
III. Council Responsibilities
» Council Members are the only way for the DEC to make important decisions effectively without creating a dictatorship-like guild.
» There is a set, ideal ratio of council members for the DEC. (3 Itani, 3 Serco, 4 UIT)
» Council Members are required to be present at at least 60% of meetings for a two-month period. Attendance will be taken.
» Council Members are responsible for receiving complaints of member misconduct. Complaints are to be forwarded to the guild Commander, and dealt with at the next available Council Meeting.
» Council Members report grievances with other Council Members to Lieutenants, who in turn, forward it to the Commander. Complaints are dealt with either at Council Meetings, or over a method of IM.
IV. Lieutenant Responsibilities
» Lieutenants are an important part of the DEC recruiting process. As such, in order to reach a wider populace, there will be two Lieutenants at all times, one from each major faction not represented by the Commander (Itani, Serco, or UIT).
» Lieutenants are required to be at 40% of Council Meetings in a two-month period. Attendance will be taken.
» Lieutenants are responsible for reviewing all guild applications. (See section on Applications1 for more info.)
» Lieutenants are responsible for reporting grievances with each other to the Commander, who will address the issue at a Council Meeting or through some IM process.
V. Commander Responsibilities
» The Commander is an integral part of the DEC. As such, the Commander is expected to know all rules laid out by the Charter and subsequent Amendments. (See section on Council Meetings for more info.)
» The Commander is responsible for maintaining awareness of the number of Council Members should it drop below eight (8) and the initiation of the appointing of new Council Members.
» The Commander is responsible for maintaining the routine of the Council Meetings, of which he (or she) is expected to be at 80% of meetings in a two-month period.
» The Commander is responsible for keeping track of all complaint reports that are forwarded to him (or her) and keeping them safe in case they are needed for future reference.
» The Commander is expected to follow through on any decisions the council makes promptly and thoroughly.

Council Meetings
I. Meeting Guidelines
» Meetings are to be held at least once a month, preferably more often than that.
» Meetings, in order to be held, require a quorum of at least:
» » One Commander OR One Lieutenant
» » A majority of the Council Members; preferably some from each nation
II. Member Roles During the Meeting
» The Commander is responsible for maintaining the speaking order and moderating the discussion. If a Lieutenant is not present, the Commander also takes the logs for the meeting. The Commander has one vote.
» The Lieutenants, should any be present, are secondary moderators and take the place of the Commander should he/she not be at the meeting. Lieutenants also take the logs for the meetings. Lieutenants have one vote each.
» Council Members are the main voting body during the Meetings. They are here to listen to complaints and voice concerns of their own. If they have a suggestion or recommendation that requires a vote, they have the power to make it happen. Council Members have one vote each.
» Standard guild Members have only the right to speak and make their side of the argument clear. They have no vote.
III. Meeting Procedures
» Speaking Order (Under development)
» » If someone wishes to speak, they must first privately notify the person running the speaking order (SO).
» » The person in charge of the SO will be keeping a running list of who has requested to speak. When it is their turn to speak, they will be privately replied to.
» » If it is your turn to speak, please make it known when you are done speaking.
» Voting (Under development)
» » During a vote, all members eligible to vote have three options: Aye, Nay, or Abstain.
» » An Aye vote signifies that you agree with the proposed motion, change, or ruling and all of its components.
» » A Nay vote signifies that you disagree with the proposed motion, change or ruling, and any/all of its components.
» » An Abstain vote signifies that you do not wish to vote on this particular decision, that you cannot make a decision yourself, or various other reasons. Warning: If you abstain in a vote, your vote is not counted either way. It is the same as not voting in a presidential election.
IV. Moderation of the Meeting
» IRC Channel Settings
» » Channel will be moderated (+m)
» » Channel will be topic controlled (+t)
» » Channel will be secret (+s)
» IRC Rankings (If applicable)
» » Commander has operator status.
» » Lieutenants have half-operator status.
» » Council Members have voice status.
» » Members who are currently speaking have voice status.
» » Members who are not currently speaking have no status.
» » If you are not a member of the guild, and are not on the speaking order, you will remain without voice.
» IRC Rights
» » You have the right to speak without interruption.
» » You have the right to be listened to.
» » You have the right to object to something someone else is saying politely.
» » You have the right to be silent if you have nothing polite to say.
» » You have the right to expect that people will be polite to you, and that if they are not, that they will apologize to you.
» » You have the right to not be harassed in any manner.
» » You have the right to make a complaint if any of your rights have been infringed on.

Hehe, asking a leader if he has any leadership skills is like walking up to an artist or musician and asking "are you any good?"
Jun 16, 2005 CrippledPidgeon link
Yea, you never ask a leader if he has leadership skills, cuz you could find yourself volunteering for something that you really don't want to do.

Re: Charter section Member Guidelines/Conduct

Section has been rewritten to read:

I. Member Behaviour/Conduct
» As a member of the DEC, you are expected at all times to be respectful of:
» » Other Players
» » Guides
» » Developers
» » The DEC Commander, Council, and Lieutenant(s)
» In general, the DEC frowns upon unregulated PvP, as there is a very fine line between what is "socially acceptable" and what is not among the players in the community--and this line shifts depending on which player you talk to. This being said, these are the rules set forth in respect to PvP:
» » Border Patrol is permitted, as long as you do not neglect your duties as a guildmember.
» » Capture the Cargo is permitted, as long as one does not neglect your duties as a guildmember.
» » If one is fired upon (hit or miss) by a player at any time, one may fire back.
» » » If one is destroyed by a player before one may fire back. Remember the rule DOKO. “Die once, kill once.”
» » The guild's current definition of griefing is purposefully seeking out another player to repeatedly kill them with an intent of driving them to bankruptcy, leaving the game, or any other result that is bad for the overall community.
» » » If a player comes seeking a guildmember out for the above purpose, the guildmember is well within his or her rights to destroy the other player--only when that player comes to him or her.
» » It must be stressed that guildmembers are not supposed to go out seeking a fight; the DEC is a peaceful multination guild intent on helping everyone.
» » Guildmembers who attack other guildmembers in any fashion within the context of the game will have their memberships reviewed.
» » » The only exception to this is dueling sanctioned by the server with the /duel command.

In other news, we are now asking for people to join for our initial council. We are looking for two Itani, two Serco and two UIT that can be active in the guild and not idle. Our lieutenants have been selected, and they will be revealed at the whim of the lieutenants themselves. If you want to join up/request more information/offer services, please contact me at miharu(dot)kanaka(at)gmail(dot)com. Substitute the words in parentheses for the symbols they should be.

Sounds interesting, but this Guild already suffers from the same problems that turn me away from most other Guilds: that pesky demand one be respectful towards fellow players and guildmates.

Can't have any fun these days, I tells ya.

Still, I look forward to seeing DEC members flying around, so they can be polite to me before I blast them from behind.

Oh, wait, if I couldn't before when fighters could pursue traders now it's gonna be harder XD

Respectful in the context of the charter means "Be Nice" in the sense of the Message Board. Don't verbally abuse/harass other players. Don't grief other players. Don't be a troll. Simply put: Don't be a jerk. ('Jerk' in this context does not mean you can't PvP. In fact it means the opposite; just don't go overboard.)

I'm not asking the members to be pillars of society. I'm just asking that they respect common courtesy when interacting with other players.
