Sorry, my stupid writing teacher made us write a 12 paragraph essay on the difference between saying "holiday break" and "christmas break" last week. So needless to say, I'm ready tell anyone who says happy holidays to STFU!

Hey, I never said Happy Holidays. I'm a devout believer in the great and holy Flying Spaghetti Monster! His birthday is in June.

NO! i nod and say "Merry christmas man!" and all is well!!! what they heck do i care if they put a menorah up with the star of david and play their music and dance their dances??? I DON"T!! i think it is grand when one can celebrate their holidays with that kind of energy!! an so long as.....

Silly. Christmas is a pagan holiday adopted by christianity, probably because they like pine trees. And Jesus was born in september.

MERRRRRRRRY CHRISTMAS!!!!

Christmas is indeed a pagan holiday assimilated and perverted by the ancient Christians.

It was originally just a simple festival of lights (known as Yule), but what with the african Kwanzaa and the jewish Chanukka (Hanukkah, et al.), the Christian faith felt kinda left out, so they stole the Druid/pagan holiday of Yule and twisted it to serve their own needs as a late entry to the realm of winter light-festivals.

Of course, nobody knows when Jesus was born; we do know when he wasn't, however, and that is in the winter months. This makes a) the concept of Christmas being a celebration of his birth silly and b) any claims of "Jesus was born on THIS day not THAT one" pointless as there is nothing to back it up.

I was going to stay out of this, but:

Kwanzaa was created in 1966. Much later than Christmas, right?

No offense to the Christians, but Christianity has a long history of assimilating beloved local celebrations into church-sanctioned feast days as a means of recruiting the locals.

The Winter Soltice has been celebrated in some form ever since man noticed it.

One late pagan sun god was Mithra

The worshippers of Mithra were assimilated by the Romans, who replaced Mithra with Saturn. Mithra's celebration was replaced by Saturnalia.

In the 4th century AD, Christianity assimilated Saturnalia in hopes of bringing in more pagans.

To make it fit into the mythos of Christianity, they made the final day of Saturnalia into the birthday of Christ. Saturnalia was quite the debauched holiday (look it up) and it was quite awhile before things settled down into the controlled chaos we have now. The trees came in when the Asheira cult (who worshipped trees) was recruited by the church.

Yule/Jól was celebrated in Iceland and throughout the Northern Hemisphere well before the advent of Christianity, and the Christian missionaries didn't make it up there until around the 10th century.

Eventually, with globalization, all the various Winter Soltice celebrations have begun to meld together.

Ok, maybe Kwanzaa wasn't the best one to pick as an example, but at least someone else gets the point that a lot of "Christian" holidays aren't Christian at all, at least not in their origins.

I'd point to the various spring holidays as well and proceed on the lines of "We felt left out, so we figured we'd mish-mash their holidays together and call it Our Vewy Own," but I think we don't need to go there.

True that most "Christian holidays" are somewhat take-overs from "pagan" holidays...

I say - you're not cool unless you sacrifice goats on a quarter-moon night.

Personally, I don't see why Christmas HAS to be taken as a religious holiday. Whether you're a Semite, Muslim, Pastafarian, or even Atheist... Christmas is just the celebration of a m(M?)an's birth. He was certainly incredibly influential in almost all forms of theology, philosophy, sociology, history, and even psychology. Just because we have a President's Day doesn't mean we worship them as gods (but it would certainly be your insane right to do so).
