SHOCK HORROR!!!

May 11, 2003 UncleDave link
This capital ship is nothing but a sham! While reading a magazine yesterday I saw a rather disturbing picture and alarm bells began riinging in my head...

CAPITAL SHIP = GIANT ARWING (off StarFox)

yea in a way i guess it looks like that...actually quite similar...never even realized it.

I played the original Starfox (maybe the last thing that ever came out on a console that was revolutionairy enough to really attract my attention), and I got to say that someone is smoking crack.

First of all, Arwings (even modern ones like Starfox Adventures) don't have texture detail that looks remotely like that. How could they, Arwings are fighters. Second of all, the rear profile of the two vessels (and face it, that's most of what you see of an arwing) is nothing alike. An Arwing has a profile basically like an X-Wing (surprise surprise), only the top two wings are shorter than the bottom two. The capital ship's rear profile is something like a star of betheleham, with that long single ventral fin trailing down from the middle, and several quite short rays eminating from it. And actually, those rays don't point outward like the Arwing's anyway. They are more like enclosing baffles. Thirdly, the nose of an Arwing is shorter and (hahaha) more vulpine compared to the long thin nose of the capital ship we've seen.

I've never seen the arwing before. I've never played starfox. I'll have to see if I can dig up a picture of it...

I don't think there's a single scifi space ship design that you can't say "ooh, that reminds me of <such and such>."

/me applauses Celebrim.

really, i can see a slight similarity in the... long nose thing (front/back /me has no idea) but otherwise they are not that close in looks dude.

Yes, i hate anyone who disagrees with people about such and such and says they are smocking crack. I voiced my opinion and got the same reply, 10 fold.

SL: And accusing artists of being derivative is less offensive? Nay, that accusition was not only of plagarism but of fraud and deception on the part of the whole development team (an accusation that I for one am really getting tired of and its not even directed at me). The word 'sham' is a pretty strong word, all caps is pretty 'loud' writing, and I was responding to the post in the same tone and informal manner that it was offered.

Contrary to common wisdom, not every opinion is equally valid and worthy of respect. If you say, "I believe the Cincinatti Bengals won the 1997 World Series under the leadership of thier head coach Barbara Streisand and with a pink elephant playing quarterback.", you don't have a valid opinion. A valid opinion is something that reasonable people could hold after becoming thuroughly aquainted with the facts. UncleDave's opinion was not only something that can't be held if you are thuroughly acquainted with the facts (as Vlad would be), but wasn't even formulated as far as I can after an attempt to acquire those facts. Therefore, if he says something to the effect of "Heh, it's my opinion. I have a right to my opinion.", I will reply, "Ok, I have a right not to respect your opinion one bit, because your opinion is just plain wrong."

Everyone and their aunt knows the 1997 World Series was won by vociferous Bengals coach Celebrim talking the opposing team to death.

rouge... what the hell are you talking about?

Celebrim, you are way too analytical of what I say. I just thought it beared a resemblance to an ARwing. That doesnt mean you have to carefully analyse both ships in order to prove me wrong. Just read back your last post and think about how it sounds to me- I am not just some little kid.

I am pretty sure that everyone else knows what I ACTUALLY meant, 'shock horror' as a title is not really the kind of thing you would take as something particularly serious.

I can hold my opinion whether you like it or not. Im not honestly sure why you are trying, not just in this topic but in every topic, to carefully analyse absolutely every word of every post and pick holes in them. We all know that this is a test, it doesnt mean that it has to be turned into a production line. I love the game, I am NOT accusing the devs of blatant plagiarism, and I will not be told that my opinion is worth nothing.

"Just read back your last post and think about how it sounds to me- I am not just some little kid."

Given that that is your response to my post, I think it is safe to say that it sounded just like I intended it to sound. Do you think that if you had said, 'It may be a coincidence, but I think the frigate looks alot like an Arwing.', instead of screaming like a little kid looking for attention that I would have responded to you in the same tone? If you weren't trying to provoke a response from people, why the heck did you start out with a troll like 'The capital ship is a sham!'? What did you expect to happen anyway? Just what were you trying to accomplish?
