Double Wow.

For all you windows users that think that a dual 2Ghz PC is as good as a dual 2Ghz mac. The Mac is better.

It was actually tested on the KEYnote.
The dual 2Ghz mac is 2.1 times faster than the dual 2Ghz PC.
Tested on a photoshop job.

Some people say you must multiply the Mac Mhz with 2x to get the PC Mhz, some say 3x. CRYYYYY!

.. mac rules!

Cheers,
Grim.

Y'know, there's more than one type of PC.

Are you referring to an Intel rated at 2Ghz? An AMB rated at 2Ghz? An AMD clocked at 2Ghz? After all, there's a Ghz difference between the first one and the second one.

PS: My 50Mhz 486 performs better than the 5260 at school, so don't go educating me about that!

Platform war! Platform war!

Actually, the duel PC at the keynote was a 3.02 xeon, intel prossesors can't handle duelness.

/me desides to just supply random trivia.

/me also thinks that the photoshop test was rather impressive...

EDIT:
almost forgot, apples VP of hardware responded to the "article" in an interview:

Rabid Panda:

1) I believe Vendetta used to run on Solaris, in pre-2.x days. Ask a dev, but I seem to remember something about a build for it...

2) $500? Lemme see... A Radeon 9800 Pro [256] costs $400, an AMD 3000+ costs $587 (looked it up, I did!), a mobo for said chip probably costs about $300, some RAM will set ya back $100, another $100 for a harddrive, about $200 for a fancy case and a very large power supply (I heard the 9800 takes a lot of juice), $30 for a CD-ROM drive, $50 for a CD-RW drive, and figure $50 for assorted cables and junk. That's a grand total of $1817, which is not a whole lot under $2000. So yes, you can build a gaming rig for $500. But it'll probably be about equal in performance to my 3-year old system...

3) Why use Maya when Blender is free? (or povray if you just want to raytrace)

The Mac vs PC arguement was pretty tired back in 1990. Let it die already, to each their own.

I think the G5 looks neat. I certainly wouldn't mind having one. I'm sure it's plenty fast.

As far as system "speed" goes, unless I'm playing a really CPU-intensive new game, or rendering in Max or something.. I have a hard time telling any computer is "faster" than say.. my P3 933. It doesn't make that big of a difference to me anymore. Things don't "feel" any faster, I care more about factors like the user interface, OS, etc. I happen to think OS X is pretty cool in those areas. I definitely do believe that Apple's hardware is more expensive than building my own roughly-comperable Win32 platform hardware, but Apple is a single operation and doesn't have the benefit of a hugely competitive PC-component industry driving down prices. Plus, no matter how "roughly comperable" the Win32 hardware may be, you still don't end up with a Mac when you're done, and you can't run OS X on it (whether that's a good thing or bad is up to personal preference), so I tend to think of them as different things.

I have an aged Sun Sparc 10 with dual SM61 cpus and 384mb of ram that acts as a little personal webserver/shell machine. It runs Solaris. I've always had a Sparc around running Solaris, I happen to like Solaris/Sparc (not More Than Other Variants, it's just one of the OSs I happened to like in my unix geek-ness.. I also liked Ultrix, which may cause many Unix people to discount my opinion entirely). My circa-1992 SS10 isn't the fastest thing on the block, it would be trivial to build a much faster machine from PC components, and I do have umpteen FreeBSD machines as well, but it's just not quite the same (no, Solaris/x86 isn't the same either). So I'll probably continue to have a Sparc around, doing something, because I like them.

Find the computer that works best for what you do, the way you want to do it, and then use that. Nothing else is really important. It's all just marketing.

This is from NewEgg ALONE, I don't need a fancy case, I have a ton of server cases that I can use from failed dot.coms.

Painter 7 takes up quite a bit of processor when I'm using my giant tablet (12x12 writable Wacom) that conveniently, Wacom nor Apple support, which I find it very odd since Apple is always trying to be like "if you are a artist of any kind, a Mac is for you" kinda deal, yet they don't support a 800 dollar tablet. This has always really ticked me off, since I got OS X, all I wanted to do was break out my tablet and boot up Painter 7 and work on some art that desperately needs to be updated. Desktops used to be a ton easier too. Oh well, I'll just have to use Painter 7 (or 8, whichever is out now *sigh*) on a win box. Besides, Win boxes are the best for gaming, which is what I do, game. Seems like everyone else here enjoys staring at code all day long.

Ummm... My friend's family has a sh*tload of Wacom tablets and nothing but Macs, and they all work fine... Also... Where are your optical drives? How about cables? And you'd need a better mobo or a graphics card. Either something with the nForce2 chipset, or a (IMO) Radeon 9500 Pro ($175ish). One 256 meg chip? Bad idea. Stick in another and take advantage of the dual-channel memory (or whatever they call it). It adds up pretty quickly. If I were going for a good gaming comp, I'd probably be spending about 1k. Sorry if that came off as a flame...

a7n8z IS a nforce mobo, did you really look at the specs for it? Also I have a UD-12-12-2 Wacom tablet, Japan only, it doesn't work state side on Macs. I have this mobo and I don't need a graphics card quite yet, I can play almost every game without a hitch. I'm not going to buy a graphics card until I really need one, otherwise there is no real point in me spending money ne? After call, there is a conservation of anime here, tho most of you assholes still live at home and don't realize that you don't have to pay bills, car insurance, rent, life insurance, drivers insurance, car repairs, anime and food and trying to do it all on your 12 dollars an hour job when you can't work for more then 20 hours a week because the economy has died. Fuck you 9/11, thanks for ruining my fucking life. (woah, agnst post...)
Jun 26, 2003 Pyro link
12 bucks an hour? What exactly do you do for a job? I make 20 an hour doing computer repair and consulting for people, and I'm just starting my sophomore year in high school... Yeah, the economy sucks right now. I've gotten a total of one job this summer. Granted, it's all word of mouth and I haven't started advertising yet... Panda, are you sure there isn't a hack to get the Wacom tablet working?
Jun 26, 2003 Rabid Panda link
I work in mofo retail where I get to deal with the mass population of the world (consisting of mostly morons), work here isn't to good, you take what you can get basically. Once I get from AX tho, I'm supposed to start working as a bicycle rickshaw driver, I only hope that works out.
