no no no, the computer lab is are bunch of quicksilver G4s and some linux boxes, but the *students* are only allowed to use XP pro. Oh yeah, anyone see that the US Army is building a supercomputer out of Xserves?

well ...

Its harder to do something usefull with windows then with a mac or a linux machine... So if you are able to do it with windows then you sure as hell will be able to do it with linux or a mac since they make life much more easier :D

Its part of the program :D

cheers

I forgot to mention, I bought my computer from Ibuypower. It’s nice; I haven't used Tech support yet. The basic mouse included sucks (Made by Mitsuko), and the Artec CD-RW that came with my computer died after a session of 35 straight of CD burning (it can still read...) It probably only went through 250 CD-Rs, which isn't a lot.

Warrenty is 3 years parts + 1 year on-site. But you have to send in this little card thingy to start your warrenty (which I lost :P).

Well, I got the new computer, and am quite pleased with it.

However, I have a problem maybe some of you guys who are Windows-savvy could help me with.

I have about 130 GB of files I need to transfer from my G5 to my windows computer. 802.11g and ethernet would take forever.

I know that macs have something called a "firewire target disk mode," where two computers are hooked up via firewire, and one is booted in a slave mode so that it shows up on the master as just another hard drive.

Is there a way to do that in Windows? Do any of you know how? Is there any software I could use to transfer my data via firewire?

AFAIK, windows only supports direct connection via Serial, Parallel and IR ports. But maybe there's a new firewire mode I've never used... You could always just get a M-M firewire cable, plug in both ends and see what happens...

Hmm. Since you're not using your G5 anymore. . . can I have it? =) Pretty please?

Please heed the "Be Nice" screen.

What happens if you run a firewire cable between the two comps and boot your G5 in target disk mode? I think its a firmware feature and simply turns your G5 into a very expensive external HD.

Er rogue, can you imagine moving 130gb via IR! lol

BTW, whats the bus speed of the Athlon 64?

Simon: 400mhz, I believe.

I tried booting the G5 in target disk mode, but the PC said it didn't recognize the hardware and needed drivers, and upon finding none, said it was impossible to "install" the G5 as a drive. Meh.

Truth hurts whistler, and he is in fact, wrong. Camps, install the G5 as a generic removable volume and it should work fine.

There are different ways to present the "truth". One way gets posts deleted.

Camps, do both of them have gigabit ethernet? You could always stick a crossover cable between the two of 'em...

Oh yeah, I've had my new computer for a couple days. It's *literally* inaudible from 1 meter... ^_^

You dont need a crossover. All gigabit chips are auto-MDIX
