I'm getting really pissed. Can anyone tell me of an AVI player I can use? I'm getting tired of trying to convert it with no success. Thanks.

The trick is that AVI isn't so much a codec as it is a container for any number of other proprietary codecs. Unless you know what the AVI was encoded with, you can't decode it. Some likely candidates are:

DivX
http://www.divx.com

Intel/Ligos Indeo
http://www.ligos.com/indeo.htm

MS-MPEG4
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/format/codecdownload.aspx

Truth is, the AVI container is such a confused mess that it should be avoided entirely in favor of industry standards such as MPEG 2 or 4.

Might be illegal. Probably not. Use at own risk.

Nothing's illegal unless the feds say it is AND they know you have it...and/or...your parents say it is and the law coincides with what your parents say. -My policy on illegality

use vlan. if vlan can't handle it, it's probably broken.

vlan still needs codecs to render the video in.

A quote from the VideoLAN page:

"[VideoLAN] is an excellent movie player. It has it's own plugins for playing different movie formats, so it doesn't need any codecs to be installed. It works great for previewing partially downloaded files too."

I use VLC. Not great, but it works most of the time.
