Odd flicker with mac os update.

Sep 03, 2017 davejohn link
Retina Imac, latest os.

I tried Mac GL4 driver, Mac Retina display on. Full screen mode, nothing much but VO running.

In space I get a slight periodic flicker. Its only for a fraction of a second, and is sporadic. Almost as if there is a set of frames missing.

I haven't noticed it happening in pda.

Thanks for the report. Can you try /fps and then /toggleframerategraph (sorry for such a long name) to see if there is actually a set of missing frames? Then, if you can, try to quickly take a screenshot showing the graph (Cmd-Shift-3 to take a screenshot of your desktop).

Had this too once or twice with the previous version of the client. It hasn't returned since.

However, what it still does is getting framedrops every second (see screenshot below, the pattern keeps repeating itself). Looks like the gfx card overloading, which it shouldn't do unless you seriously beefed up the graphics compared to the windows client.

Also, it resets the mouse position to the upper left corner whenever you switch between the PDA (or any menu) and the HUD and so your ship always spins around when you switch back to the HUD.

This happens on both the Reference and the newer GL4 driver in fullscreen mode.

Running on:

OS 10.11.6
i5-4570 (3,2GHz)
8GB Ram
GTX 760 2GB

EDIT: I just noticed I am getting the occasional stuck key while I fly around.

Tried a couple low graphics settings now, with and without limiting my max. fps and it still drops frames exactly every second.
What is wierd though is that twice after restarting the client it did not drop any frames until I jumped to another sector, or another jump after that.

I then set my graphics settings to my previous settings without any change in behavior. Then I dropped dynamic lights to 10 instead of 32 and after a restart of the client it magically did not drop any frames anymore. Resetting it to 32 introduced frame drops again after a restart.
Now after lowering dynamic lights back to 10 and restarting the client it dropped frames again even after multiple client restarts, so I give up for now.

Screenshots. The first two screenshots of the settings are of the rare client session without the repeating frame drops every second.

Macs are still a thing? :O

I see the flicker on our mac mini as well, I don't know why it's doing that though.

I logged on once yesterday to try again and with the unchanged previous settings, as shown in the screenshots posted earlier, I got 120fps with (though limited to 120, so might have actually been higher). I got no dropped frames, but instead my frames always stayed around 60 instead of 120, while every couple of minutes it jumped up to 120fps for about one second and then went down to 60 again.
I didn't try restarting the client that time.
Tune in for the next episode of x-files this weekend.

Have you worked on this? As shitty as the OS X client runs, I don't even bother logging in anymore whenever I have a few minutes to blow stuff up. Having to boot into windows to play the game is quite annoying.

We released a patch for the Mac mouse-related issues about a month ago, in early October.

Have you tried the game recently, to see if it's still not working well for you?

Yes, I wouldn't have written the above post if I hadn't tried it yet.
I talked to A-Dawg about this and we came to the conclusion that it just might be related to the OS version. He's on the current OS 10.13 and I am still running 10.11.6 and he doesn't have any performance issues, while I get continuous frame drops as shown a couple post earlier.

I might have some time to update my OS this weekend, so I'll eventually report back on that.

Ok, please let us know what happens. We're looking at doing a Mac Store release at some point, and would like to stabilize the game there. However, we do not have a Mac with a discrete AMD GPU like yours.

It's also helpful to keep us updated on what problems are still present, and are the most challenging to live with.. Like from a brief reading, the mouse stuff sounded debilitating, where occasional pops from 60 to 120fps doesn't sound nearly as significant.

The GTX 760 is a Nvidia GPU.
I just answered Ray's mail - yes the mouse handling is fixed, thanks. It was certainly the more annoying issue compared to the frame drops, but fighting with continuous frame drops every 1~1.5 seconds isn't really any fun either.
The drop from 120 to 60 maximum fps honestly just makes me scratch my head and doesn't really impact gameplay. It kind of shows something isn't working right though.

Sorry, I'm confusing bug reporters.. Davejohn has the Retina iMac (all Retina iMacs have AMD GPUs).

Although, as far as I can tell, all the Mac Pros since 2010 have had AMD GPUs as well. What kind of Mac are you using at that has a GTX 760?
Nov 03, 2017 Niki link
I'm using a hackintosh, but you can also install any graphics card in the old mac pro's in tower form factor.

You kind-of can, but you need a separate Quadro driver pack for a GTX 9xx series, and fundamentally the internal NVIDIA drivers may not be as well-maintained by Apple, since they aren't using NVIDIA chips anymore.

I mean, I hope that isn't the case here, but we've certainly seen them do that kind of thing before.

Hopefully your OS update resolves the problem.
