Third-person improved does not work properly

Apr 05, 2025 HunPredator link
The shortest way i can explain is... whenever i go to third person improved on pc, the game camera seems to be completely disconnected from the ship. Is that intentional? It used to work fine before, now its like... stays in place while the ship moves, can in fact move out of view, what its not supposed to do. When i move my mouse, i can literally see my ship moving across my screen, while the camera stays at the same spot, as opposed to facing the rear of it and moving along with it.

Huh. I mean, that sounds like one of the optional client camera modes, that you can access by hitting the camera-change F-key several times, as it cycles through all the different available modes. You're sure you don't just have the wrong mode selected?

Nope. as i set view through the options menu under game settings. Yes its weird, and have zero plugins what modify anything related. Looks quite odd for sure, and i generally dont hit random keys

Well, okay, but did you cycle through the views after you changed the setting? I would suggest trying that.

It's possible that it adds to the list, rather than replacing the existing third-person mode, which would then push you to a different "setting" and require cycling through the camera view to find the one you want.

Otherwise.. we'll have to take a look. I don't know offhand.

I have tested it quickly. In regular 3rd person mode, the f9 (or V for me) works fine.
But when i enter 3rd person improved, the entire thing gets stuck. Literally, i can mash the keys, and it will do nothing. So pretty much nothing works, the camera stays in its weirdly broken way.
So yes, probably something is broken.

I'm unable to duplicate this issue on my vanilla Windows client (up to date, no plugins), with a mouse and keyboard.

Basically, if I launch and hit F9, I correctly cycle through all the different cameras.

However, if I go into Options and set the Flight camera to "Third Person Improved", it correctly changes to that and uses it on launch. It works and I fly around successfully.

Could you please verify this issue on a "default" client? And if you can reproduce it, give me some specific steps to do so?

I will disable plugins then and do so later.
Reproducing it was just a matter of switching from regular 3rd person view to 3rd person imroved in game settings.
Its surely odd, will try to do so without plugins and respond here again.
I havent tried it by docking and undocking, the way i got this oddity is by switching camera while undocked in space.

Apparently, whatever i do, the game breaks the 3rd person improved, plugins or not.
Idk whats wrong, but when switching from regular 3rd person to 3rd person improved through options, it does its usual odd stuff.
It does not matter whenever i do the switch through options docked, or undocked. F9 also does not work in 3rd person improved.

- What platform are you using?

- Do you have any game controllers or other unusual accessories plugged in?

- How are you disabling plugins?

- Have you also tried moving your config.ini and wgaf.cfg to a backup location, and letting the game use its startup defaults?

I just re-tested on my vanilla-default Windows install, and it makes no difference whether I'm docked or not. Changing from First Person to Third Person Improved works fine for me.

F9 also does not work in 3rd person improved.

So, if I use Options to change Options -> Advanced -> Game Options -> Flight Camera Mode from "First Person" to "Third Person Improved", then I can no longer use F9 to change camera modes in-flight.

But, I don't think that's a "bug". That's because Third Person Improved isn't in the F9 camera-cycle option set. So, there's no way to hit F9 to "get back" to Third Person Improved. F9 only allows Third Person and Third Person Alternate.

So thats why f9 does nothing.
Okay
I use windows 10 as the OS on my laptop, plugins were disabled in game, then restarted it. I also use no controllers of any kind, just keyboard+mouse.
Also, the issue isnt switching views... but rather the camera behaving oddly, and is completely disconnected from the ship, but not like how freecam is you can select.
Its like... the ship will move, just the camera does not, its fixed in place facing whatever, while the ship moves completely separately.
This issue only affects my pc, but not mobile. On pc, it used to work as well, but at some point it broke the way i described it, after an update i assume.
I havent tried moving the two main config files yet, but may do so.

- Does your laptop have a touchscreen?

- Which renderer are you using? DirectX 11? Vulkan?

- You could email your complete game log state to support at guildsoftware dot-com. This would be like: config.ini, wgaf.cfg, errors.log, directx.log, (basically any other log files from the game).

I don't have much else to suggest, beyond putting the game client back to complete defaults and seeing what happens at that point?

I understand what you're describing about the camera.. but if we can't reproduce it, we probably cannot fix it.

Are you disabling plug-ins this way?

Launch VO
Select Options
Select Advanced...
Select Game
Toggle Plugins to Disabled.
Select Apply
Select Quit.
Relaunch the game.

It must be done this way because otherwise some code from plugins may still reside in memory and have an effect.

Yep, exactly like this. The game prompts me to restart the game for it to take effect, so yes i do it properly

Thanks, that reduces the variables.
