Unstuffing the Vendetta.sit file comes up as a package?

Feb 25, 2004 Quickdraw link
I have unstuffed the Vendetta.sit file which creates the Vendetta icon on my desktop but when I try to launch the app nothing happens?

When I right click the icon one of the choices is to "view package contents"?

Is this supposed to happen? There seems to be no icons that will launch the program?

10.2.8
1.2 Gig Processor
1.5 Gig Ram
ATI 9000
Stuffit Deluxe 8.0

PLEASE HELP!!

Big fan of EV, and Vendetta seems like it would be an EV on steriods!!

It could have been Stuffit not correctly setting the execute permissions on the Updater.
Go into the Vendetta.app/Contents/MacOS and then
chmod 777 Vendetta

When you launch Vendetta it actually launches the Updater which then downloads the updated version of Vendetta. When it is done downloading it asks you if you want to run Vendetta.

Raybondo,

I found the file, but I dont follow you on "chmod 777 Vendetta". That sounds like a terminal command and I don't know UNIX.

I tried changing the permissions through "get info" but I still can not get it to run?

Let me know what I doing wrong.

Thanks much!

1. First off, repair your disk permissions by running Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.

2. Update your version of Stuffit Expander to the latest one. It's free, so there's no reason not to.

3. Redownload the Vendetta.sit file from this website after logging in. Let it unstuff automatically after your browser completes the download. You should get a single package labeled "Vendetta" with a vortex icon. This is normal. Double click this.

4. An auto-updater should run. Once it finishes updating, it may quit and ask you to run the updater again. This is so the auto-updater application itself will be updated to the latest version. This is normal. Still with me?

5. When you run the updater again it should then proceed to update all the latest game data, which will then allow you to play the actual game. Enjoy!

It sounds more complicated than it is. Essentially you don't have to worry about any of the package contents. All you have to do is double-click that vortex icon labeled "Vendetta", which will automatically prompt the auto updater to load up. If you're curious as to what's going on, the Vendetta package not only contains game data, but also the auto-updater program as well as the actual game application itself. So it's actually two applications rather than one. While you can bypass the auto-updater and go straight to the Vendetta application, you won't be able to connect to the game server unless you have the latest version.

Hi Arolte,

Ok, did as follows in the exact order.

1. Ran disk utility, verified and repaired permissions.
2. Updated Stuffit to 8.0.2 (latest)
3. Re-dl'ed Vendetta.sit.
It did not unstuff automatically so i launched stuffit and unstuffed it my-self.
The vortex icon shows up, but when i double click it nothing happens... no auto updater appears??? Nothing runs, nothing updates?

Grrrrrr, very frustrating as I have noticed from the forums many others are able to play. I know it's not my machine as a DL and run demos of games almost daily. And no I am not behind a firewall.

Any other solutions?? I would really love to give Vendetta a try!

Thanks again.

There is a Console app in the Utilities folder (I think). Try running that and see what it has. It should be a bunch of text.
Maybe there's an error in there saying why it can't run.
I don't think I've changed the Updater since last trying it on 10.2.8 but maybe I somehow made it incompatible. I don't have a 10.2.8 machine to test it on unfortunately.

Please email me the stuff that's in your Console output.

Or run Terminal and type this:
ls -la ~/Desktop/Vendetta.app/Contents/MacOS/Vendetta
(assuming Vendetta is on your Desktop)
and post what it displays.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Problem solved.

The package will not execute correctly when unstuffed with Stuffit deluxe. It must be dragged and dropped into stuffit expander or opened with expander not deluxe.

Worked just fine!

Can't wait to play!!! BTW, if your in need of a Graphic Designer for any packaging or printed material let me know! ;)

Heh ok, nevermind then.

Hey! I'm workin' to get a major in graphic design too. And yeah, from now on try to use expander instead of deluxe when unstuffing files. You'll avoid future headaches a lot. What browser are you using btw? Safari is probably the best right now, even though it has its own problems.

Bah.. Safari needs tabs like Camino, if it doesn't have em then it needs em.
Feb 26, 2004 Arolte link
Uhhh... It does have 'em. Me thinks you need to look into downloading the latest version. The only problem is that Safari still takes up way too much CPU power to run. I'm surprised Apple hasn't fixed this issue yet. Oh well, it renders webpages pretty darned quickly and I have yet to see a popup ad banner show up anywhere. To put it simply, it's the most tolerable browser out there.

...and was obviously simly an existing linux tool that apple modified. :P...
