background stars bug, ... again
okay I know this is a known bug. Background stars are incorrectly displayed:

The problem that I have is that it is not correcting after changing texture resolution. I tried many possible combinations of background details and texture resolution. Even changing screen resolution does not help.
Is there any hope for my poor cursed/doomed computer, or I must play with background turned off?

Computer Specs would help a lot....
Edit:
CPU
Video Card (driver version, DX version if applicable)
OS
ect..

whoops I'm sorry.
dual PIII 600Mhz, 1GB RAM, debian sarge, xfree 4.3.0, matrox G450
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI G400 20020221 AGP 1x x86/MMX/SSE
OpenGL version string: 1.2 Mesa 4.0.4
I play at 16bits, cos it's faster than 24bit.
PS: I used previously Mesa 6.1.0 and background worked perfectly. BUT fps rate was around 4 at 640x480. Now with older Mesa 4.0.4 Backgroud does not work and fps is around 40 at 640x480.

How old is Mesa 4.0.4?
With the G400 I recommend not using older software but since the new stuff gives you a slow speed, there's not much that can be done. It's a bug in Mesa.

background eg. in tuxracer works correctly.
please note also that background is displayed, but icorrectly. I think that supplying image for background in different format (format that Mesa 4 understands) will correct this problem.
If I could lay my hands on background images I'd fiddle with them and save under different formats to see which one works.
my drivers are from 2002.II.01. and I can see poor quality in general of 3d objects (Mesa 6.1 has much better quality), but fps of 40 is very good reason to use older+faster drivers
so... even if it's a bug, there surely is a workaround for it (because tuxracer displays background correctly).
I hope that we will find this workaround, so that people with matrox cards will be able to enjoy the game :)

hello, anybody knows how to change background image format? (maybe it's just tiff but without alpha channel, or sth like that)
The background is a dynamically generated set of images. There is no single simple texture that you could use as a replacement. The only options are to try the lowest background setting or to turn off the background altogether.
A possible third option is to try to get in touch with a developer for the matrox DRI driver and see if they can help find the bug in the G400 driver and fix it.
